5.0 out of 5 starsSimple but Profound
Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2017
I don't know for sure but I suspect that most adults struggle with anxiety to some extent. There are a lot of potential things to be stressed about in this world - some which can easily be dismissed logically, but many that are genuine concerns that probably will happen. Since this is a universal problem there are many Christian books out there on how to combat anxiety. When amazon vine offered me a book by Max Lucado I was happy to take it. I could use some help in this area of my life. I've read a few by this author. I know he has a solid, Biblical worldview.

I expected this to be an encouraging, somewhat lightweight, book that I could enjoy for a few hours, take a little bit out of, and pass along for someone else to enjoy. My first impression of the book did not sway me from this view. The main section is only about 150 pages long, with a good amount of pages blank (between chapters) or devoted to a single large quote. I hate that sort of thing in a book but, oh well, I didn't pay for this anyway.

To my slight surprise, despite the blank or 3/4 empty pages, this is a substantial treatment on the subject. Yes, it is encouraging, full of anecdotes and easy to read but it contains practical steps on combatting anxiety. Based on Philippians 4: 4-8 the author patiently dissects a very powerful passage of scripture and shows you exactly what you need to do to derive maximum benefit from these verses.

I normally don't think much one way or the other when it comes to the use of acronyms when it comes to teaching (I can't remember a single one to be honest) but Max uses the acronym CALM as a teaching tool to show how to apply these verses.

C - Celebrate God's Goodness - "Rejoice in the Lord Always"
A - Ask God For Help - "Let your requests be made known to God"
L - Leave Your Concerns With Him - "With Thanksgiving"
M - Meditate On Good Things - "Think about the things that are good and worthy of praise"

He breaks down each verse into understandable concepts that work in real life. I believe I will actually use this acronym to remind myself of the principles here. This is not a heavy theological book. These are simple real-life-applicable instructions for anyone who is willing to apply it. Medicine for a universal ailment. If you take the medicine you will see results. If you acknowledge the truth of the medicine but don't take it you will not see results. If you take a lower dosage, less often you will see lesser results. Surprisingly I have underlined many of the passages in this book that I plan to read over and over. I hope to get this type of thinking into my daily life until it becomes unconscious. Very much like the Gospel, this book will be of great benefit to anyone who simply receives it.

Some personal thoughts before I go:
One particular passage moved me greatly: "The benefit of being a great sinner is dependence upon a great grace. I found a forgiveness that is too deep to be plumbed, too high to be summited. I have never been more or less saved than the moment I was first saved. Not one bad deed has deducted from my salvation. No good deed, if there are any, has enhanced it. My salvation has nothing to do with my work and everything to do with the finished work of Christ on the cross."

This is absolute truth. If you are a believer you should know one thing: God will never be angry with you again. He swore that in Isaiah 54, which comes after you believe in what happened in Isaiah 53. God has a Covenant of Peace with you that will never, ever be removed. When we get that deep down in our souls most of our anxiety will effortlessly evaporate.

1.0 out of 5 starsWe’ve Got to Pray Just to Make it Today
Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2018
Two things: 1. I’m a Libertarian and a Christian; which means I question every Christian book I read and analyze it thoroughly. I also have a great relationship with God. 2. A friend bought me this book as I was battling crippling anxiety trying to be helpful. It was not.

Essentially the summary of the book is, “pray and trust God.” When you’re dealing with anxiety from resurfaced childhood trauma, this advice is worthless. The church and church leaders just simply do not seem equipped to handle anxiety disorders. Seriously, You’ll get more relief from listening to Pray by M.C. Hammer.

Instead of picking up this book, here’s what I recommend as someone who is getting better everyday:

First, find a great counselor to help you unpack the heavy stuff you’re dealing with. Churches rarely have qualified psychologists on staff. In fact, I was reading my bible every day at the height of my anxiety, and when I asked for prayer from prayer partners at church, I was basically told suck it up buttercup, and look at all of the amazing things God has done for me. Not really something that someone is drowning wants to hear. It wasn’t until I started seeing a counselor that I realized my childhood trauma was not my fault.

2.) Journal. Pour all of it out on pages. Couple it with your bible journaling if you want. But keeping it inside will eat you alive.

3.) Don’t be afraid to go on medication for a little while. There’s absolutely no shame in taking something to help yourself function. And it beats feeling like you’re being crushed.

4.) Keep reading your bible, stay connected to God.

5.) Don’t stay at a church that minimizes your pain or blames it all on you. Mental illness is tough, and it takes time to heal. There’s nothing worse than asking for help and being told it’s your fault you’re depressed or anxious.

But most of all: hang in there. It does get better. And if you bought this book, throw it out the window. That might help a little too.

4.0 out of 5 stars good but short and heavily quoted scripture

i liked the book, but it was very heavy scriptures. if you're religious, that will probably be great for you, i'm more spiritual, so i found it a bit much. im a huge fan of norman vincent peale, and i'll say his inclusion of quoted scripture is maybe 5%? this book felt more like 40-50% . a lot. way too much for me to recommend to someone who isn't religious. some biblical passages are repeated a few times in the same chapter as well. it was also a bit short, i believe the author's work stops around pg 150 which was a ,and with a substantial portion of that being quotes, there's really not a lot there. it was good, a pleasant read, but not sure worth the 20$ cover price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, But Two Outstanding Issues.

I liked the content of Max's message though there wasn't anything new on dealing with anxiety in the book. There are two outstanding issues that continue to bother me. The first is not enough emphasis on seeking professional help. For many people, anxiety is a crippling and dangerous disease that isn't overcome without professional assistance. The second is the over abundant use of pull quotes. In publishing, over use of pull quotes is a cheat and very much dilutes the power of an otherwise great book. I would have purchased the book for the asking price with 200 pages only and without the annoying pull quotes. Shame on the kindle formatting too! The zero formatting applied to the pull quotes in the kindle version makes them more confusing and annoying. Come on, this is simply unacceptable.

Another excellent book by pastor Max Lucado! He always uses relevant modern-day examples to explain Bible passages. My only disappointment with this audio book is that it is NOT read by the author. No disrespect to the narrator, I just really like pastor Lucado’s voice and cadence. He’s such a great speaker! I wish he would’ve narrated his own stories.

I chose this book because after losing my son, my husband, and my daughter all in less than three years I have dealt with an emotional upheaval like nothing I have ever experienced in my life. I needed something that explicitly addressed this struggle and found this work to be comforting and encouraging.

Good book that was riveting and had a nice bit of humor to lighten the load. I think the last chapter(s) containing 'what if' theories and self-examination bits was the least engaging, though they did offer other alternatives for dealing with personal situations about worrying and being anxious.

One of the things I like about Max’s books is that they are like mini sermons. I think he converts his preaching series into books or vice versa. Either way, the words, the stories, and the weavings point you to God and provide space for reflection. This book is that type of book.
