4.0 out of 5 starsDon't plan to make this film a part of your life, but don't pass it up either.
Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2017
I give the film four stars because I did find it genuinely entertaining. The premise is an interesting one, but (without giving away spoilers) the ending makes it seem like we're supposed to be happy with the result. In the end, with most of these films, much of the time the oppressive institution is what is brought down. In this case, one might think a film like this would try to stop "The Thinning" itself, but this film takes the interesting angle of forcing the viewer to see the ending as just and right. The Thinning is meant to be viewed as normal and within the film's canon and moral compass. Perhaps a sequel would dig deeper and actually try to stop The Thinning itself.

It would be interesting to know more about how this was all set up. The film alludes a bit to how it got started, and that the USA is the only country that does population control this way.

The production value is quite high, and people who frequently watch things on YouTube will recognize some of the cameos. Good music, too, which keeps the film engaging. A few of the characters (Mason King, for example) are pretty clichéd, but not in a way that doesn't match the rest of the script.

Do I think this film deserves a sequel? I'm not sure it's worthwhile to go out of your way to look to make one. It would have to be much bigger and bolder than the current script suggests the original author is capable of producing. And, with one of the main characters "gone," I would say it might have to start in another school or town and then get Laina involved as part of some sort of resistance group? Who knows.

And without giving anything away, the last ten seconds of the film open up a giant can of worms that just defies explanation.

And I do have one bone to pick with the source material. It says at one point that the UN decided all nations should reduce their populations by 5% every year. That is a massive number in the first few years that puts the Holocaust to shame. And the film just glosses over that completely. It's unclear how long this population control has been going on, but with all the High Schools basically built to exist as prisons with tons of security guards and teachers complicit in what's going on, and with all the students in the film accustomed to the annual Thinning, I'd say it's been going on at least 20 years. Which if you start at 10 billion means that the global population is now down to 3.5 billion assuming they've stuck to 5% per year. That's an insane number, and it's not clear to me that there is a way to show the audience that the world got so bad that people accepted this as "the way" and continued to do so for this long.

Anyway, that's my two cents. As far as B movies go, this is among the best. It's enjoyable as a sort of shock-and-awe thought experiment.

DO NOT READ BEYOND THIS LINE IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS

********

*******

Ok so if the UN said the USA is supposed to reduce its population by 5%/year but they are using the students as slave labor, are they hiding this from the UN? Or is Assuru working with the UN? What's the deal with that? So did none of them actually die? The sequel would really, really have to stretch big to wrap up this massive plot-hole-ridden film.

2.0 out of 5 starsHUNGER GAMES without the Games
Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2020
THE THINNING is like THE HUNGER GAMES, except they just haul the kids off and cut their throats. It's called culling. They cull 5% of the school kids once a year, killing the ones who do worst on an academic test. Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention but it appeared to me that the kids at every school level take a test and are vulnerable to be slaughtered, every year. If that's the case, then 60% (5% X 12 years) of society's youth would be killed by the time they finish high school! This movie is THE HUNGER GAMES but without imagination, creativity, cleverness, appeal, or common sense. (Society just sits by while 5% of their children have their throats cut without even getting to say goodbye?) You might enjoy the movie. Many other commenters seem to like it. I think it's a waste of time.

Yes the planet is over populated, & I don't condone killing people because of that. But the premise of the story is that parents are going to let the government execute their young children to limit the population isn't going to happen by any stretch of the imagination, especially if there are criminals (one of the news casts in the movie was talking about crime), severely or terminally ill people (one of the character's mother was fighting & losing to cancer) & old people around (some of the bit characters were over 60). A better story would involve a limit on how many kids a couple could have, maybe even a lottery for those who don't make up the 1% (i.e. rich) to have a kid type conspiracy. I can come up with a few scenarios that would work better than the one in this movie.

1.0 out of 5 stars Only watch to laugh, it doesn't even take itself seriously

For a moment I thought this was an interesting/scary plot for a movie. However, the execution and acting were laughable. Had this premise been in the hands of the right director/producer and replaced some acting appearances, it could have had potential.

Instead, Logan Paul basically plays himself. A full of himself super douche. A super douche who, is (of course) the son of the Governor, and is 'too cool' to remember the other main characters name. Not once, but twice. Yet somehow he knows enough about her to know she was selling high-tech contacts to help people cheat on the standardized tests. He also very rudely talks down to her about it, but quite literally asked for one the year prior.

The entire story line is choppy and disconnected; so many rushed base story lines and yet it somehow feels drawn out and tiresome by the end. It feels like a poorly quilted together story between any characters and as predictable as a Disney channel movie. The convenience of events that continuously lead to save the other main characters life is embarrassing. It's impossible to be "on the edge of your seat" when a movie makes it clear its main goal is to save the main girl. It became a game of "what insanely well-placed convenient timing".

Unless your a YouTube movie reviewer looking for something dumb and eye-rolling to review, I highly suggest not wasting time your time trying to overlook Logan Paul attempting to act.

1.0 out of 5 stars Thought this might be a "Guilty Pleasure" film. I was so wrong.

Do not believe 5 star reviews of this snooze-fest turkey. Ghost-written to drum up business I suspect.

A mash-up of "dystopian future" flicks such as Battle Royale and The Purge that goes nowhere interesting nor surprising.

Weak acting bordering on awful at times. Flimsy plot and cornball deus-ex-machina situations galore. One of those films where someone needs a password to look at crucial information on a computer. What to do...oh yeah text a friend whose Dad is a real big-wig in this whole "Get rid of the bottom 5% of all student classes" shebang and have that kid send you back footage from a security camera of the Head Bad Guy conveniently typing in the password on the home-screen. Piece of cake.

Lots of pretty actresses (that standard whistle-blowing reporter can really shake it) won't alleviate your sense of profound boredom and familiarity watching this suspenseless un-thriller. It's never explained how society universally accepted this purging method and there's no explanation why only now there's growing dissent over it and why certain teachers showing compassion only now are speaking up.

It's never shown what criterion are used to determine students who passed are instead chosen to have failed and vice-versa (save for the Governor's son) although it's implied jerk star QB's will get the benefit of avoiding needle jabs while strapped to chairs.

The one scene with any real emotion involves a Kindergarten instructor showing her class a film about how this thing got started (a convenient way to explain the plot) and then must sit by helplessly as they take their first test. Followed by reading the names of failing students (too young to comprehend their situation.) It's a touching scene...and it goes nowhere. Nor is it brought up again.

81 minutes long and it feels twice that. Avoid this Grade-Z with a Grade-C budget dud, folks. Not worth your time.

Oh please, I don't know where to start. I really don't understand the 4 stars reviews for this movie. It doesn't even compare to Hunger Games. The worst was to pay $4 for it and waste my time watching it.

You can tell the Director and Script writer, had no clue at how to make a movie. They did not even attend any kind of schooling, because if they did, they would have studied all the movie like this already made, and least got an idea what the actors should do in life threatening situations.

This has got to be some of the worst acting I've viewed.. Supposedly an A rated title with what would seem a decent plot line, delivered in such a way that I quit watching within the first 30 minutes.

Poor character development, sloppy story line. Don’t waste your time. Supposedly 5% of kids get killed every year but turns out they just send them to work in a factory...so how did that solve the problem. This movie was simply dumb.
