5.0 out of 5 starsSuch a heart rending romance!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 27, 2023
I really felt for these characters.
What begins under unusual circumstances soon heats up and the amorous situation which Gray and Rosalinde find themselves in soon gets out of control and these two main characters find themselves in an even more unusual situation.
Add in a hateful grandfather and two siblings who have agreed to marry each other and you have more complications rearing their heads.
This is a beautifully written love story with very interesting characters who crept under my skin and had me reading till I finished their tale.

3.0 out of 5 starsInteresting plot and likable characters poorly served by OVER-DRAMATIC writing style
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 15, 2016
This book is like that nursery rhyme -- when it was good it was very, very good, and when it was bad it was horrid. Here's what's good -- the bones of the plot were good. This is that type of mistaken identity story where strangers hook up then later discover they know each other IRL and that they hooked up will cause problems. Always a favorite for me. Another good thing -- or two good things -- the H and h. I liked their characters and could understand their unique perspectives. More good stuff -- a touch of mystery at the heart of the story. The mystery element was pretty well done -- didn't overwhelm the romance yet kept percolating in the background enough to be intriguing and draw me through the story to see what was going on. Ok, now for the bad -- the writing. Everything was BIG!!! Melodramatic!!! Overblown!!! When the couple hit a romantic bump in the road they HATE each other. Then on the next page they LOVE each other. Sometimes the only thing that changed was that they walked into a different room. If you are looking for writing that's subtle, nuanced, and doesn't disrupt your suspension of disbelief, THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU!! Despite all that, the plot was interesting enough, the characters likable enough, and the mystery engaging enough that I not only finished the book but also found I missed it a little when it ended. The story is the first of a series tho, so I'm sure I'll check my disbelief at the door and buy the next one when it is available. I have read a lot of this author's work and enjoyed some of her other books like the Pleasure Wars Series. Don't know what's up with all the melodrama in this one. Maybe she'll tone it down a bit one of these days, but not too much -- this IS romance, after all!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Start to a New Series
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 13, 2016

“‘This isn’t going to be quick, Mrs. Wilde,’ he assured her between kisses that tasted her skin. ‘It isn’t going to be perfunctory.’

She shuddered and leaned back against his chest. ‘What will it be then?’

He lifted his fingers to the top button of her gown and unfastened it, letting his fingers slide into the gap he’d created.

‘A night to remember,’ he vowed. ‘For both of us.'”

FINAL DECISION: I very much enjoyed this book of these two people who are on opposite sides of their siblings upcoming marriage. I thought the story and connection between the characters was good and I found their story sweet if a bit simplistic in its resolution.

THE STORY: Mrs. Rosalinde Wilde is a widow traveling on her way to her sister’s wedding when a snowstorm forces her to stop at an inn. There she meets Grayson Danford. The two end up having dinner together in the crowded inn and then decide to spend the night together — two people attracted to one another knowing almost nothing about one another. A night of passion out of time. How surprised they are to discover one another again as siblings of the couple getting married where Gray is determined to stop the wedding.

OPINION: AN AFFAIR IN WINTER is the start of a new series, and I think this series has great potential. This book begins with a 19th century one night stand between the hero and heroine. Although the night is special for both of them, they part in the morning never intending on seeing one another again. Of course, they end up being siblings to a couple getting married. The two are placed in opposition as Rosalinde supports the marriage, while Gray is opposed.

The one night stand, of course, complicates what would have been a pure adversarial relationship between Rosalinde and Gray. I loved that these two are so likeable when the events easily could have led either of them into being conniving and betraying any possible relationship between them. Everything between them ends up being handled in such a reasonable and deft manner, that I never moved from my initial liking of the characters.

Rosalinde is recovering from a bad marriage, but she never loses her optimism and her belief in the joy and love of life. And despite a love match gone wrong in her own life, Rosalinde wants love and happiness for her sister. Gray is determined to avoid love after seeing both of his siblings suffer because of bad relationships. He cannot resist Rosalinde despite his resolution. Both are incredibly loving siblings (even when they are wrong) and this essential characteristic gives these two a foundation that connects them in unexpected ways.

Even when they are at cross-purposes, there is an essential element of caring that keeps them from being torn apart. I thought that their evolution of their viewpoints of their sibling upcoming marriage was amusing but also represents their intelligence and the complexity of the situation. The ultimate lesson is that people should be free to make their own choices having all relevant information.

The connection between Gray and Rosalinde is hot and intense — even in proper society dress. I really only had one complaint and that is that the solution to all the dilemmas seemed too simple and didn’t necessary convince me completely. Despite that, however, I enjoyed this book and look forward to future books in the series.

WORTH MENTIONING: Oh, now I really want to read Gray’s brother’s story. I think that is going to be an angst filled one.

CONNECTED BOOKS: AN AFFAIR IN WINTER is the first book in the Seasons series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved that it didn't follow the typical romance "plot twists"

So many pleasant twists and turns. Extremely refreshing how the characters really cared for each other and didn't fall into the stupid typical "misunderstandings" of most books. They spoke to each other like humans and I absolutely loved it. Also, the heat was amazing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smashingly Great Series Opener

As a long time fan of Jess Michaels books I knew I wouldn't be disappointed in this story. To be quite honest, I bought it knowing nothing about the story at all! Well, I was right! I've been pulled, even though I wasn't fighting the pull at all lol, into another great series. Great characters, solid story and a wish for the next in the series to come out quickly.
I'm not going to re write what the story is about because if you've taken the time to scroll down to the reviews you probably have already read the basic premise of the story above. What follows is my somewhat rambling, apologies in advance, opinion of the story with no spoilers!
In An Affair In Winter we first meet widow Mrs. Rosalinde Wilde, sister to Celia Fitzgilbert who is marrying Lucien Danford, Earl of Stenfax. On the way to the wedding she is stranded at an Inn do to a storm, which is where we meet Grayson Danford, brother to the Earl and who is determined to save his brother from a title grasping miss ( the afore mentioned Celia!). Still with me? Before the two realize who the other is sparks fly....and if you've read a Jess Michaels book before then you know the sparks are bound to be hot and steamy. If you haven't had the pleasure of reading a novel of hers then I suggest you start with this one :) you're in for a treat *wink wink* But as I said before no spoilers, you'll have to find out on your own just how 'sparky' these two get.
An Affair In Winter is as perfect a Book 1 in a series as you can get. You meet almost all the characters that will form the future books in the series, at least that is what I'm assuming. You are given just the right amount of information on each of their backstories to make you want to get to know them and hear their stories. Jess Michaels is very good at character development, which is one of the reasons she is one of my favorite authors. None of this, however, detracts from the main story of Gray and Rosalinde, which is fantastic. This story has everything that, to me at least, makes a 5 Star book. Throw in an evil grandfather, a dark family secret (or two!) and the hot and steamy....did I mention the hot and steamy? and Ms. Michaels has herself a winner. Although we are the actual winners because we are the ones who get to read it! I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story with lots of excitement.
Much to my happiness I won't have to wait long for Book 2 in the Seasons series. I did my little happy dance when I read that A Spring Deception comes out in September 2016 YAY!! All I can say is keep them coming Jess Michaels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Regency twist

Twisting back and forth with multiple ups and downs within this plot, the issue of love versus arranged marriages is challenged in this book. However, somewhat unrealistic is the timing aspect of marriage for Rosalinde and the unrealistic and horrific behavior of her grandfather who has dominated her and her sister for most of their lives. After all, what is it to him to pay out big bucks just for a title? Otherwise, different story line that maintains one's interest for those who prefer this genre.

I see a lot of negative reviews. Color of eyes across the room. Not having her maid with her. Crowded Inn etc. It's a book. Author is painting us a picture. I love this book. It took 2 lonely people and built a relationship with them. I love a steamy novel that isn't crudely overdone. This fit that. But what I really loved was the relationship of siblings. So often a brother or cousin is backstabbing the Lord to take over his position. This was beautifully written with the love between the 2 brothers and the 2 sisters.
Did it leave a bit of a cliff hanger. A bit yes. But with the relationship between the H and h. Will be a great series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable Start To a New Series **Minor Spoilers**

4 stars.

I really enjoyed this. Couldn't put it down.

A winter storm has stranded Rosalind and Grayson. The two spend the night together, knowing that it'll only be one night and both go their separate ways. Only to realize later that day that Rosalind is the sister of Gray's brother's betrothed.

There is a lot of backstory with all these characters and it makes their present so much richer.

Celia and Lucien don't have a love match, they are both getting something from the marriage. Lucien gets wealth, Celia gets a title and a certain standing in their social circles. Gray wants Lucien to not marry Celia, Rosalind wants Celia to marry Lucien and get away from their horrible (insert your choice of vile names) grandfather.

I loved how protective both Gray and Rosalind were of their siblings. They wanted them to be happy and they both had their reasons for wanting what they want. Sorry for being vague but if I start explaining the backstories I think it will take away the enjoyment of finding it out and reading it as it happens.

A couple minor issues, there were a couple times Celia got on my nerves when she was angry with Rosalind. Then I didn't completely understand why Gray was so against Celia and Lucien getting married. I know Lucien had a heartbreaking break up with his former love and it messed him up but I didn't understand how Celia would be bad for him.

Had fun reading this. Looking forward to the next one.

They met by chance and gave into desire then found themselves opposing each other over the betrothal of their siblings.
Family history and secrets on both sides complicate their relationship. The story must surely continue in at least one or more books. I look forward to following them.

Although the plot in An Affair in Winter is a tried but true story-line, Jess Michaels' writing made this set of circumstances enjoyable and interesting. I was fascinated by both Gray Danford and Rosalinde Wilde. Their damaged characters didn't know what they were seeking until they found each other. Still, there were obstacles to overcome, including the ones of their own making.

I really liked so much about this book, but I was disappointed by the explicit sex. It was truly unnecessary. Ms. Michaels is a very good writer and her skill truly made their passion for each other come alive. The raw sex was over-kill. I wish these talented authors would realize that a readers imagination is a better conduit for enjoyment then is the explicit word.

I am giving this book 4 stars because I liked the writing, the story and the characters. Without the explicit sex and swearing, this book would have easily been a 5-stars read.

Content alert: There is a significant amount of swearing (d*mn, h*ll, g*d, b*stard & chr*st), as well as numerous explicit sex scenes.
