Light does not adjust brightness according to ride profile. False advertizing
Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2020
The light is bright. However, it fails to last into the planned ride. I planned a route of 62.3 miles today which lasted 4.5 hours elapsed time, 3.8 hours moving time. The light battery died less than 2 hours into the ride.
The light was joined to the Garmin Edge 530 and should have been running dimmer since the head unit had the 62 mile ride programmed. However, the headlight kept changing itself to the brightest setting.
Several times I changed the light to a dimmer setting hoping to make it last longer. Each time, the Garmin head unit changed it back to the maximum setting.
For longer rides and any sort of bike-packing, this light is nearly unusable. It would work well for my shorter rides in the morning, but $100 is a hefty price for a headlight that only works for short rides.
Worse still, the light sends annoying pop-up notifications that the battery is low about an hour and a half into my rides. This is infuriating because it should have adjusted itself to the "ride profile" and conserved battery on it's own. It resists the users attempts to manage battery life and then gripes when it runs empty on rides you told your GPS you were going to do.
The Varia tail-light is a life saver that lasts all day and I thought this would complete the picture..... not so. Steer clear of this junk.
Maybe Garmin will release an update to make the battery life more sensible. Until then, it gets 1 star for overriding user input. If I put it on a lower setting it should STAY on the lower setting.
