Another intriguing and absorbing case for Rutledge

Another intriguing and absorbing adventure for Inspector Rutledge. This time he is investigating murders in Suffolk after coming upon the first victim by happenstance. The connection between the victims is difficult to understand but again chance plays a part in Rutledge getting a significant clue that leads to the solution. As he travels from one village to another in the neighborhood, he meets several pleasant and cooperative people. Unfortunately, the local Inspector is no help since he’s eaten up by jealousy of the first victim and the mother is an unbelievably vicious and destructive woman. The spirit or ghost of Hamish makes only a few appearances this time which evidently means Rutledge is well on the way to recovery, or at least acceptance, of his horrific war experiences. I marvel at Rutledge’s car considering the miles it has traveled in all the novels in this series!
