Kiddo Was Runner Up!
Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2020
My son came in runner-up at his school (and in the final round, his answer was sooo close!), so I'd sy this was a great help! He's a bright kid, but he'd never really shown any special interest or on-it mind for geography, so I was happily surprised when he first came home saying he'd qualified. In other words, his natural baseline for geography stuff wasn't anything special.
The other kids in the line-up were all very accomplished students and...well, my son has a capable head in there, but against them, he was definitely a bit of a dark horse (decently high IQ, but working hard to steer clear of academic probation with his extracurricular clubs is a thing...thanks, ADHD). He had only a few weeks between coming home with his qualification letter and bee day, and this book was one of the first things I grabbed when the news came. It had some great strategy advice and really laid out the process of the bee well. Also, the sample questions really gave him a good feel for what sorts of facts and topics and stuff to hone in on studying. He used this book, the Nat Geo Bee app, and a comprehensive Atlas (each had their own special merits; I'd advise all three), and it seems he ended up pretty successfully prepared. I mean, we're perfectly pleased with how he did. If your kid qualified for the bee, get this. It really had a lot of solidly helpful advice and discussion.
