Another fine read by Watson. Spoiler alert.
This one starts the parents. Jonathan, Sandy and Bill and Mary. The parents who have finally made it to land. Of course they landed in California and still have a long, long way to go to get to the cabin and their kids. They have already had to kill some of what the kids call "stinkers." Sandy thinks the name is appropriate. One of those they killed was a cop and they now have a shotgun, a Glock and an M4. They don't have much ammo but beggars can't be choosers. They have learned that noise attracts the undead so clubs, knives, rocks or anything that will break the skull works just fine. Guns will be used as a last resort.
They landed near a campground with RV's. They searched the RV's for food, water and anything else they can use. They find one gun a 10/22 with two ten round mags. There is also a grocery store at the camp and they hit that for anything they can use. Surprisingly there is quite a bit of food, clothing, boots and loads of gear in this store. They also find another gun. A Ruger 22/45 and boxes of ammo. There are also a compound bow and a recurve bow with plenty of arrow. Silent killers indeed. They find mountain bikes and those bikes will be used to begin the journey to the cabin. They all agree they need to avoid the Govt. No way do they want to end up in a FEMA camp.
At the cabin Lilly is finding it hard to believe how young Lance is. A Lance with a rock hard body and loads of ability. Lilly is a decade older than Lance and knows what she's thinking is ridiculous but she can't help herself. I like Lilly but get rather sick of her thoughts about Lance. Good Lord nothing could be more ridiculous.
Jennifer and Ian are an item but they still have problems communicating with each other. Allie and Carrie are coming into their own. The two of them will start pulling more weight on patrol. The two small girls will prove to be more than capable with their weapons.
They all still do workouts and practice daily with shooting. They all watch educational DVD's on every subject that they think they can use. Once that's done they all hit the gym for a good workout and then breakfast. The kids at the cabin have it much better than most folks out there and they all know it. They have chickens for eggs, goats for milk and hogs. They also hunt for deer and game birds. They have motion detectors and traps all around the outside of the two fences that protect the cabin from the stinkers. Both Ian and Lance patrol every day and either Lilly or Jennifer go with them along with Dino and either George or Judy which are Lilly's two German Shepherds.
The two tigers are still out there and are still killing stinkers. Stinkers Ian and Lance have to burn to keep the others away. The tiger have turned into some pretty good allies. Of course they had to be dissuaded from viewing Carrie and Allie as lunch. It was something Ian solved by having the two little girls approach the gate where the tigers were watching them. They sprayed them both with bear spray. The tigers learned that neither Allie or Carrie were prey.
Ian and Lance are still doing "deeds" against gangs. Bones has a gang and there are also white supremacists in the area. They still raid Bone's supply houses for ammo and whatever else may be useful. So far neither gang has any idea the kids are anywhere around them and no one has come near the cabin.
Jonathan, Sandy, Bill and Mary are just outside Reno, Nevada. The trip on the bikes has been a hard one and they have taken to traveling at night and resting during the day. They will avoid stinkers and any humans they may see. They all know they will need to use stealth to get home.
Jonathan, Bill, Sandy and Mary are still in Nevada when they stumble on a ranch. A ranch that has horses. Seems the place was an outfitter for those taking guided hunting trips. The crew now has horses. Four saddle horses one for each and four pack horses and all the gear needed to load the pack saddles. All are grateful because riding bikes sucks the big one in all their minds. Also horses will get them where they are going much faster. They also find two Belgian Malinois. The dogs are nine months old and named Ann and Dan. Dogs Jonathan decides need to go with them as there is no one around. Dogs who prove invaluable on the trip.
The house at the ranch turns out to be a gold mine. They find a gun safe and Jonathan figures out the code to open it where they find an AR two Rugers, a 1911 and a Beretta with loads of mags and ammo cans stacked by the wall of the cellar where the gun safe was. The house has solar panels, hot water. and they all took showers for the first time in months. They also find loads of food and Jonathan finds a note to a son named Brock. It lets him know that the family is in Elko at the FEMA camp since no one but the police or the military can shoot the stinkers. More idiocy by the Govt. Another reason Jonathan and his crew will avoid the Govt.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has Jonathan, Bill, Sandy, Mary, Ian, Lance, Lilly, Jennifer, Allie, Carrie, Dino, George, Judy, two watchdog tigers, the pathway Lance decides they need to detour the stinkers away from the cabin, a Lilly who tells Lance the parents will be there sooner than he thinks, a Lilly who knows once the parents do get there her ridiculous interest in Lance will be dying a death, an Ian and Jennifer who know they like each other, stinkers who begin to show signs of ambushing people, a battle between the Natzi's and Bones and his crew, a Lance and Ian who take every opportunity to raid Bone's supply houses, Jonathan and his crew getting closer to home, people they meet along the way, the horses who are proving to be worth their weight in gold, Jonathan and crew who are getting closer and closer to home and the kids, a Jonathan and his team who get trapped in a barn, a running battle to get out, a running battle that leads to tragedy and both teams doing their best to survive and stay alive.
Five Stars and then some. Next book should be awesome.
