If This Series Could Stand by Itself.... (SPOILERS)

it wouldn't need to incorporate major characters from past stories. Minor characters such as camp directors, etc, certainly allowable. He has, within this book, created enough of a new environment and many, many new characters to make everything work. But nooooooo, he has to bring in (unnecessary) previous characters and then kill them in order to create sympathy and suspense for what may happen next. This is known as gratuitous killing and is detested by readers, because it serves no purpose except to (supposedly) put the protagonist (and author) in a compassionate light. Here's a clue, Rick. Try fewer inane remembrances of Apollo (they are so trite and vapid) and more imagination in getting the story across on its own merits. You remember how to do that, right?
