How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsThank you Roxane and your brave essayists.

My 71-year-old, white, Christian, able-bodied, educated, successful, cishet father and I have been having a good ongoing conversation about the #metoo movement. He struggles with the idea that even a few innocent men will be maligned if we #believewomen. This book moved him to tears to learn how much worse the repercussions of rape culture are for me and his granddaughters than he thought possible.

1.0 out of 5 starsIt's THAT Bad
Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2018
This reviewer has been through most of the experiences depicted in this book: blackout rape, being masturbated "at," manhandled, and, most importantly, incapable of expressing her needs in sexual situations. However, this reviewer also believes that human nature is complex, and biologically determined, and that men are not taught in any way, shape or form, what this book says it does. In other words, the real rape in this book is its toxic narrative. Yes, you can get past bad sexual experiences, just as you're expected to get past a car accident. (And how is it, this writer wonders, that uncomfortable or disturbing sexual matters are not to be overcome, but most will get back into a car after an accident? But this book doesn't want you to believe that for a second. It insists that men are demons, that even an attempt or expression of sexual desire is dirty and bad, and that a foul experience between a drunken stupid man and a drunken stupid woman inevitably consigns women to chronic anxiety that therapy doesn't seem to help. It's utterly painful to read something so monolithic othering, so lacking in courage, I'm sorry. It made me sick, but not in the way it was supposed to -- and I'm thankful for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Important Read (but trigger warning x 10)

This is an extremely intense book for anyone to read, but it’s well worth it. This book was able to put words to feelings I’ve never been able to articulate. It touched parts of me that have long since hidden in darkness. It gave me solidarity, it made me feel not alone and justified my anger. This allows me to feel, without guilt or shame, something that I’ve never felt before.
I...Am...EVERY...PERSON ... IN... THIS... BOOK
I can relate in some way to all of them.
Thank you for this.

We are just not a sexually healthy society! Misogyny and assault of women is not news to me and yet....reading these individual pieces made so real something that a part of me would rather soften or push away. I am so grateful to the writers who contributed their stories. They show the myriad ways that these acts of violence and degradation take place and are metabolized (or unable to be) by the women (and men) forced to experience them. I realized that an experience of molestation I had as a child in a movie theater was pure and simple a sexual assault. These stories are very moving. Very important. They deserve our attention!.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such an Important Book!

I went on a bit of a journey through Opposite Land while reading this book. I love that this book exists. I hate that it has to.

The title was what initially grabbed my attention: Not That Bad. How many times have I and countless others said that?! Was it because it wasn’t that bad? No. It was that bad but we still live in a world that, on the whole, doesn’t want to know about sexual assault.

It doesn’t quite feel right to say I have a favourite anything where rape culture is concerned so instead I’ll say that the best definition of rape culture I’ve read to date is by Clem Ford: “A state of existence in which the impact and reality of sexual violence is minimised while the perpetrators of it are supported by a complex system built on flawed human beliefs, mythologies about gender, and good old fashioned misogyny."

Usually I’d give each contributor in a book of essays an individual star rating and comment on their writing style or whether I connected with their story or not, but I won’t be doing that here. I’m so proud of everyone that contributed to this book and while some essays impacted me more than others, I’m not comfortable critiquing anyone’s experience of rape culture.

My full review (too long to post here), including a quote from each contributor’s essay, can be found on my Goodreads profile.

These essays are powerful and hard to read, but they gave me hope and courage too. We aren't alone and we have each other.

I love her work and if you’re familiar with Roxanne gay you know they are signing up for a lot of discussion about rape particularly in this piece but it’s a part of the title so ... you know before hand.

The book came in perfect condition. It was a great read, even though it was horrifically sad and hard to read at points. I really enjoy anything that Roxane Gay is a part of.

This book is raw and intense and at times hard to get through, but i also find myself being unable to put it down! Highly recommend! This is going to be one of the few required class books I’m going to keep.
