It is actually nice that we got to know Sam Pritchard as young man, having to decide which college to go to, to get engaged, married, doing army service, starting off in Denver PD, etc.
A lot of it I, as inveterate reader of all the Sam Prichard books, came to know already by bits and pieces along the way. Now the puzzle is completed somewhat more. Loved it, as with each and every Sam Pritchard story.

I started with this one and, because I like the genre and have enjoyed other series by the author, will probably go on to the next in series, hoping for an improvement. There were a number of occasions when I asked myself whether I'd picked up a book designed for the high school (or junior high school) reader. Too much time was spent on his failed romances (unless they or the characters resurface in later books) and the leap over much of the main character's first year was abrupt. The writing was not at the level I'd hoped for and will expect if I'm to continue much further in the series. Here's hoping for an improvement...

After having read all of the Sam Prichard series it was great to read the prequel. David Archer managed to incorporate a mystery into the introduction of Sam Prichard. I say introduction because this book tells the story of Sam and how he became what he was in all the other books. Like his other books, I found this book to be well written, holding my interest and and easy read. Thank you David for bringing Sam Prichard full circle. I look forward to you continuing the story line of Sam's adventures.

This book is the prequel to the Sam Prichard series. I was pleased to see this book because we knew Sam had to take a pension from the Denver PD, but not the details that surrounded it.

Fans of the Sam Prichard series will be pleased to find this gem. It tells us more about Sam's life was before he became injured "on the job" and is forced into medical retirement. If you own the Sam Prichard series, you definitely want to add this to your collection.

I've read the other Sam Prichard books and loved them. Seeing Fallback I wasn't sure I wanted to go backwards in Sam's life, and was so pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed it immensely. Love the way Archer writes making you feel you're there but not spending too much of my reading time with insignificant detail. Sam is a favorite and I look forward to all new Archer books. Love Nero Wolf too! I hope he gets them out there as fast as possible; I'm a fast reader!!

I grabbed this to get the background story on one of my favorite PI's. It turned out to be an OK read, filling in some of the details alluded to in the regular series. I only wished the author would have reread what he had already in print. In this book, he courts his wife for a year and is nervous about getting married so quick. Toward the end of the book, it is a repeat of book 1 and in that storyline, he elopes after a 4 month courtship. Leaves the reader with a feel of instant dropout from the book.
