A charming story that takes a slightly dated fairy tale with a selfish ending and turns it on its head. Making it relevant to today's kids, while maintaining the underlying message and giving the ending a boost of cooperation. The basic premise of The Little Red Hen fairy tale - if you don't do the work, you don't get the reward - remains. However, this version tweaks the traditional ending in a fun and satisfying way. The large, brightly colored images portray the entire family's enthusiasm for life and individual creativity. This is a wonderful book for celebrating determination, self-sufficiency, ingenuity, cooperation, and girl power.
LOVE THIS BOOK! Its a great twist on the classic tale of The Little Red Hen. Female lead character builds a fort while her brothers refuse to help! Fun story that can be integrated into your literature lessons to compare text and inspire your students on a fort building STEAM engineering project.
This is a retelling of the Little Red Hen wrapped around a girl who wants to build a play fort without any of the prerequisite skills, but not letting that or her unhelpful brothers get in the way. I like that it is a fully developed story with fun repetition and a good message that you don't have already possess a skill to do something. The illustrations are also lovely. Right now, my child likes the pictures and the story and I can see the book being helpful into the future as they develop predictive literacy skills and will be able to "read" the repetitive lines that the brothers use when saying they don't want to help.

My kids loved seeing Ruby’s imagination and determination bring her little fort to life. This would be a great story to help kick off your summer!

When the fort is all finished, of course the brothers want to play too. Eventually, Ruby figures out a way to have her fort and her brothers to play with. Loved this retelling of The Little Red Hen! My son loves to build so I purchased this book for him and we both enjoyed reading about the strong, clever, and resourceful girl named Ruby as she took her idea and brought it into reality with her own two hands!
