5.0 out of 5 starsMy favorite from an excellent series!

If you look at his other books you are about to see that I'm about to place eight reviews in a row copied and pasted, with maybe a few tweaks per book, because I've read through eight of these in the span of six weeks! I don't remember if I ever reviewed a book before (much less a series), but I am enjoying Caimh McDonnell's writings so much that I feel the need to just add some 5-star reviews on each of the books I've read. I've even started buying signed copies of many of his books from his website after having read all of these on Kindle.
So I haven't read much recently, and I don't even remember how I came across this first book to even start, but once I did I just wanted to keep going non-stop! I have really enjoyed each book immensely. I just love the characters and the humor throughout the whole series. I'm one of those people that usually fall asleep while reading, but not with these. I can (and have) read these books for hours on end. I can't recommend these enough for anyone. Just really that enjoyable.
This is the third book of the series as it was written, but since it's one of many prequels, it is the first book chronologically. This one is my favorite of the eight books I have read so far. They are all great and I'm giving the whole series that I read so far a five-star review, but to me this one just stands out. I guess I want to say it is more poignant than the others as it dives deeper into the main character on an emotional level while still maintaining the author's trademark humor throughout a fairly dark crime thriller. This is one I will definitely go back to read again once I have finished the three main series with these characters.

Definitely not as good as books 1 and 2. There is a definite decline in my level of interest. Will give book 4 a go. But the routine is getting tired.

The glorious banter between the two main characters makes this a must-read. The fact that the plot is twisty and well-developed is a bonus. I heartily recommend this novel -

Did not see the ending coming, which is rare for me. Really loved the journey and the characters. I discovered this author on Kindle and bought several of the books that followed. I have now added the physical books to my library so that I can reread them again and again.

Other authors allowed on my bookshelves: Thomas Perry, Tolkien, Preston and Child (together and singly), Cherie Priest, S.M. Sterling, Jodi Taylor, and John Sandford. A short list but allows folks to understand the company Caimh McDonnell is keeping.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fire can destroy or harden, in some cases it will do both

Book three of the four part Dublin Trilogy is actually an insert acting as a prequel going back 18 years to a formative period in several of the Trilogy's major characters' lives. Front and center is Bunny McGarry who came across as a hardened sleeze ball in A Man With One of Those Faces, the opening entry in the Dublin Trilogy. Profane, obese, unwashed, and a violent rogue cop, he was no one a normal person would seem to want to have in their lives. Going into more depth, entry two, The Day That Never Comes softened his image considerably with tales of the many people Bunny has aided in his speckled career. Angels in the Moonlight continues that bent by introducing us to a younger and far more innocent McGarry. Along the way in his trial by fire he/we will meet bent cops, a kid he saved in a fire years ago now making his play to be Dublin's drug kingpin, a runaway jazz singer who captures his heart, rogue nuns with an agenda as well as a killer for hire FBI agent and a cop friend who will test his loyalty to the limits. If he survives he will not come out untouched by the flame. My only caveat was the video game/Hollywood action hero antics near the end that snapped the believability of the story up to that point. Superior world building, fetching characters, fast moving plot line and a few surprisingly tender moments highlight this entry into my greater European crime drama series of choice.

Note: to complete the back story to the Dublin saga I recommend the free download of How To Send A Message at Caimh McDonnell's website: whitehairedirishman.com Amazon does not allow outside links so you will have to type it in by hand. A collection of various short stories, the back story on the rogue nuns caught my fancy as did several of the other shorts included. Freebies tend to be garbage where this writing was the equal to his longer work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thrill ride through Bunny McGarry's past
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 28, 2017

Angels in the Moonlight was a fun read. As the subtitle states, this is a prequel to
the Dublin Trilogy, set in 1999, and fleshes out the Bunny McGarry character from those
earlier novels. The McGarry we knew through those stories was an irascible, unpredictable
loner and often a deus (of chaos)-ex-machina.

Angels in the Moonlight humanizes Bunny through three main story lines. There's
a love story when McGarry meets Simone, a mysterious, sultry American on the lam.
We meet Bunny's partner in the Garda, Gringo. Some of the best and funniest dialogue
in the book is contained in their conversations. And a cops and robbers story where the
Garda has to take down a ring of Dublin thieves attempting to branch out into the
drug trade.

I read the book in two sittings and probably would have finished it in one if I hadn't
started it so late in the day. The three arcs work well together and are intertwined in a
way that keeps you repeatedly going to just one more chapter late into the night.

McDonnell injects a lot of humor into his novels and there were some very funny
moments in Angels in the Moonlight. The dialogue is wonderful (and us Yanks get to
learn a lot of Dublin slang) as well as hilarious situations, like the opening scene
with the "jumper". A review I read of his first book, "A Man with One of Those Faces",
compared McDonnell to Carl Hiassen and Elmore Leonard. That's a very apt description
of his fiction. In the same mold would be Don Winslow’s early books with Neal Carey,
Gregory McDonald's immortal Fletch series, George Chesbro's more obscure Mongo
series, and of course the multiple series of Tim Hallinan. If you’ve enjoyed any of those
authors, you'll love this book.

I read the Kindle edition and the copyediting was well done. I didn't spot any misspellings
and there weren't any jarring errors in layout that interrupted the read.

To be completely transparent, I received a review copy of Angels in the Moonlight
from the author after he asked for review volunteers on his mailing list. But I don't know
the author. I've just enjoyed the previous books in the Dublin Trilogy and thank the
reviewers who convinced me to give Caihm McDonnell a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Entertaining Books...If You Haven't Already Done So, Read Them

This, the third book in the "Bunny" series, is a prequel that provides both another well crafted story and really helps flesh out our favorite character, Bunny. Regarding the logic of reading the prequel as the third book in the series, I personally like it. It struck me as odd before I read it but I agree with Caimh's logic of putting it third in the series. My dad (just one in my family who are now reading about Bunny) is somewhat more linear in his thinking and, even though he read it as the third book, would put it first for anybody new to the series. Like I said, I like it in third place but it works either way.

Others have given more details that I won't repeat here. I will simply add once again that I can't believe how good these books are. My sister and I, both of whom read voraciously, were discussing this the other day and both agree that this relatively unknown author (sorry, Caimh) is writing stories that we enjoy as well as the best we've ever read. So, to Caimh, thanks and I'm glad you are seeing a decent measure of success. And to others who are wondering whether to give it a try, an emphatic thumbs up. Plus, Caimh makes it really easy to get a couple of free "tastes" which is how I got into it.

My biggest concerns now - first, obviously, I want to see more Bunny (and Paul and Bridget...and Phil). But second, I am really hoping to see more of the nuns. Third, I think Caimh travels too much and that it is limiting his writing time. The problem with that is that I am reading faster than he is writing. So, note to Caimh, chop chop...

5.0 out of 5 stars Caimh McDonnell does it again!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 1, 2017

My first exposure to author Caimh McDonnell was his novel A Man With One of Those Faces, book one in the Dublin Trilogy. I was in the mood for a good crime novel, so I checked the reviews and it looked worth a go--and it was! I have now read everything by McDonnell that I've been able to get my hands on and am ready for more.
Angels in the Moonlight, a prequel to the Dublin Trilogy, is a revealing introduction to the younger Bunny McGarry. The novel provides important background and character development of Bunny as well as more of the adventures and misadventures of this complicated, colorful Garda detective who is always in the thick of the action and on the verge of disaster.
McDonnell’s writing is a joy to read. His main characters are tremendously engaging: flawed but decidedly human, well-developed, and memorable; and his minor characters are effectively drawn as well. His plots are wickedly clever, and the humor, while delightful, never steps on the serious elements of the story. The writing is consistently strong and gripping, revealing McDonnell’s gift for storytelling and word mastery as well as enthusiastic entertaining. It is clear that he enjoys writing his stories as much as the reader does reading them. I particularly liked his use of Irish terms and slang (which, being American, I sometimes had to look up). It never interfered with the flow of the story; in fact, every time, the word or phrase in question not only fit perfectly, it also effectively contributed to the flow and flavor of the writing. I am now eagerly waiting to discover where McDonnell will take Bunny McGarry and his readers next. Five stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars C'mon Ye Gobshite, Man Up!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 12, 2021

I loved the gruff, mysterious, unfettered supporting character, Detective Bunny McGarry in the first two Dublin Trilogy books, so I was excited for him to get his day in the sun (or moonlight) in Angels in the Moonlight, where we go all the way back to his younger days in 1999 (so long ago, tee-hee). Bunny is mixed up with a partner with gambling debts who crosses the line, a nun who gives Bunny the cold, hard truth, and Simone, a sexy siren who is hiding from her past. Throw in an armed robbery gang and you get a fast crime story laced with humor and Irish slang. (Every morning in the mirror now, I’ve taken to saying what Bunny says to himself: “C’mon ye gobshite, man up!” Kind of a daily affirmation.) I’ve enjoyed all the Caimh McDonnell books so far--great fun!

Others have given detailed reviews of the plot. I'd like to point out some of the many strengths that make Caimh McDonnell's writing in this book so good.

His characters are originals, no cookie-cutter sorts. The main characters have such distinctive voices that in one scene in which we were concentrating on serious action, we suddenly 'hear' a line of dialogue. One short sentence of swearing, which you might think could have been anybody. But I knew at once that it was Bunny, whom we didn't even know was at the scene until that moment!

The dialogue sounds Irish without ever being over the top or cliched. So much of it is in the music of the speaking, even in a police procedural.

The two main plots mesh together throughout the book, never making it disjointed. Also--and this may seem like a small thing, but to me it's a mark of thinking about your readers--McDonnell sprinkles little reminders of who's who and what's what, in case we've forgotten an important detail mentioned a while back, throughout. He does this seamlessly, without ever being obvious about it.

Thanks, Caimh McDonnell, for a great read!
