The plot is really contrived

I don’t usually read YA novels but my cousin recommended this one. Kudos to the author for the geographical research. But I thought the plot was really contrived. The reader has to slog through over 300 pages to find out what was the awful thing that happened to Annabelle that made her run across country. The other problem I had was that the secondary characters, like her grandfather and his new girlfriend, and even her parents, read way more interesting than Annabelle. She was kind of bland or generic; nothing special about her except she had been involved in a tragedy.
