Midnight Promise: A Sweet Magnolias novel Book 8 is by Sherryl Woods. This just continues the story of the people of Serenity, South Carolina. This book is just packed with fun and games, fights and promises, weddings and divorces. It really keeps you on your toes. Sherryl puts the reader right in the middle of all the things going on in town and makes it very realistic.
Karen and Elliott finally get married to her children’s delight. Daisy and Mark really like having Elliott as their stepdad. It makes things easier and makes Mom smile more. Karen had finally agreed to an annulment of her first marriage so she could marry Elliott in the Catholic church which pleased his Mother. However, Karen still felt out of place when the Cruz family got together. His sisters were still a little cold to her, although they totally accepted Daisy and Mark. Luckily for Karen, she now had the Sweet Magnolias on her side as well as Frances, her elderly neighbor who was more of a grandmother to her kids than her own mother was. Although she was madly in love with Elliott, he was beginning to keep things from her which she disliked. With their work schedules, they didn’t get a lot of time together which made it hard to talk about serious things. With the help of Elliott’s Mother and Frances, they began having date nights so they could talk.
Elliott and the husbands of the other Sweet Magnolias and their wives had been talking about opening a men’s gym in Serenity. The only gym they had was Dexter’s which was run down and dirty. They hoped to all go in and open a men’s gym. Elliott’s part would be sweat equity as he and Maddie would be in charge of the gym and as he got the hang of it, he would run the men’s gym and Maddie would continue to run the Corner Spa. However, Elliott felt he had to put in money too and their savings wasn’t much which left a second mortgage on the house. Instead of talking this over with Karen as soon as they began talking about it, he waited until it was almost settled then, Erik spilled the beans while they were working at Sullivan’s. She felt betrayed and felt he was acting like her ex-husband and going to get them in debt and then leave her with the bill. He wasn’t taking her fear of debt into consideration and as her name was on the deed, there was no way she was risking their home. Things are destined to get more twisted and involved before they could even think of getting better.
That doesn’t include what Elliott’s sister and niece were up to or Frances's new problems, all of which involved Karen and Elliott. Would their new marriage have a chance of surviving when all they did was work to make ends meet?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!

Once again, Sherryl Woods provides her readers a lively, entertaining, enjoyable read with her eighth volume in the Sweet Magnolia series, "Midnight Promises." This time the focus returns to the marriage of Karen, an employee at Dana Sue's Restaurant, "Sullivan's", and Elliott, the fitness trainer at the Corner Spa, owned by the Sweet Magnolias: Helen, Maddie and Dana Sue. The couple fell in love in an earlier volume as Karen, a single mother supporting herself and two children, struggled to face the challenges and responsibilities which all fell to her shoulders alone. After Elliott's determined courtship finally won out over Karen's doubts and insecurities, the couple faced an even more powerful block to their relationship. Elliott came from a staunch Catholic family with a firm refusal to accept Elliott's proposed marriage to a divorcee and working mother. After finally grasping that Karen's husband had deserted her and their two children, and made no subsequent attempt to support his family or be a father to the children, the Cruz family finally accepted the inevitability of the couple's intent to marry, based upon securing an annulment of Karen's marriage by the Catholic Church. Now the couple encountered the adjustments faced by all newly weds; particularly with both spouses pursuing careers and the added factor of children and step-parents. When the Sweet Magnolia spouses decide to follow through on the long-conceived idea of opening a gym for men and turn to Elliott as the only one with the experience and expertise to manage such an endeavor, the financial commitment pushes all Karen's insecurity buttons. In addition, Karen struggles with Elliott's desire to adopt the children, when she has no idea why she feels such hesitantly. Karen does know that Elliott's heritage of a strongly macho Latino family, reinforced by his mother's frequent lectures about fan ale submission and the woman's role in assuring her husband's happiness at all costs, giver her great concern. All this issues, stoked by the couple's limited time together, result in frequent "midnight promises" difficult to fulfill in the light of day. The only major side issues introduce in this volume concern the formation of a "Senior Sweet Magnolias" group, and the collapse of the marriage of one of Elliott's sisters, whose issues serve to spotlight some of the challenges Karen and Elliott face. One side remark: thank goodness Woods is now using "***" between paragraphs to indicate a change in subject or character focus. That shift addresses one of my pet peeves and clears the way for my even greater enjoyment of Woods' tales of the citizens of Serenity. Always good reading!

This book is another great addition, adding in new characters to the series and continuing to keep me interested. It's usually hard for me to get into a book, but these are well written.

I love that there is romance without being too racy. The characters are developed so well I have a great mental picture of all of them.

It's great to be back visiting in Serenity! While I enjoy the boy/girl romances - this book reaches a different level. Sherryl Woods captures the concerns so many of us face in the happily ever after times. I could so relate to the trust issues Karen faced. I, too, had a Ray as an ex-husband. It leaves you confused and shattered, unable to believe someone can be completely trusted. Sherryl Woods certainly takes a very insightful look at the communication skills needed to make a successful marriage.

Also enjoyed the Senior Sweet Magnolias. Aging myself and also dealing with an aging parent, Woods gave me hope for the future. It's a good lesson to remember "Keep looking forward. Make new memories" Think I'll plan a trip to Vegas.
Great summer read!
