How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

3.0 out of 5 starsGood not great
Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2019
I was in the need for a decent tool kit. After much research, I decided on this one.
I had narrowed down to this kit, and Craftsmans 220pc set.
At the time they were within around 10 bucks of each other.
The reason Dewalts case sold me, was 72 tooth ratchets, and all 6 pt sockets.
The Craftsmans kit has 45tooth ratchets, and 12 and 6 point sockets.
I have always preferred 6pt sockets, and finer teeth makes for less swing in tight areas.
Sometimes that really matters.
I also like the Dewalt fat handle design. Its easy to find thin tapered handles, or bi-material, but hard
to find heavy thick handles.
The Craftsman kit does have quick release ratchets, but honestly, I am indifferent.
As far as the case goes, mine is fine. Quite robust actually. Not really sure who'd call this flimsy.
When opening, the letters face up. Like always.
Both brands are made over seas now, and have lifetime warranties, so that is a wash to me.
My only complaint would be my 1/4 in ratchet was real "crisp" feeling. Like it may have had some grit in the teeth, or just wasn't oiled from the factory.
It loosened up, but works better now after a blast of WD40.
I consider this an upper tier consumer grade set(not).

Update: 1/4 in drive went back to its old ways. Def has a "square" spot in it. That bothers me.
What bothers me more is there isn't a proper hex included to open and inspect the ratchets! At least not in my set. That itself merits a star reduction.
Lastly, the 1/2 in drive is set NOT a 72 tooth. I finally slow counted clicks over and over and got 36. Rereading the sales description, gives the impression ALL ratchets are 72.
Still an ok set, but maybe not as good as I originally thought.

Update 2:
This is my last update.
After doing a water pump change, these ratchets finally got the best of me.
I dug and scrounged and found an old junky gas station pocket multi-driver, that had the proper
size bit for opening these ratchets up for inspection.
1st observation: Zero lubrication. None. Nada. Not even the tiniest light film. Nothing. Dry.
I normally use a grease designed for fishing reels, but I couldn't find my bottle, so I used a dollop of
STP in each ratchet.
My test, that infuriated my dad, is to hold an extension, and spin them like party favor noise makers.
If grease and that motion, don't smooth them out, they're garbage.
Results:
1/4 drive: smoothed out. It doesn't have that "catch" and "grab" feeling every 30 or 40 clicks.
Knock on wood, it seems good.

3/8 drive: It always felt smooth, although it occasionally reversed direction on me doing the water pump. Now, it barely makes a sound (I accidentally over greased it), and is smooth as butter.

1/2 drive: For whatever reason, presto! It now clicks 72 times! I guess the rocker inside was stuck, don't know.
Popping some water pump bolts free didn't help it, but the STP did. It seems to be fine now. I actually miss the solid 36click sounds now! The 72 clicks sounds weaker, lol. Time will tell. Guess I got used to the louder clicks.

My opinion of this set hasn't changed.
When I buy a set of tools, my first mechanic action should NOT be to repair the tools themselves. That is ridiculous.

For those who want to attempt opening these and greasing them, be very careful not to loose the little spring. I can see that easily happening. Work over a magnetic tray. The 1/4 drive can be tricky since the parts are so tiny inside, but it is doable in just a few minutes. Don't just jerk it apart. Hold the selector in with one hand from behind, and ease the mechanism up little at a time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rust!!!! Rust!!!!! Rust!!!!

I have a large set of American Craftsman tools in my basement work shop, but wanted another nice set for my garage. I decided to try Dewalt. Now they are sturdy and do the job, but many of the pieces are rusting and rusting badly. I never expected this from a brand such as Dewalt. My Craftsman tools are 40 years old with not a speck of rust. Very disappointed. I am going to buy new hand tools, but it certainly won't be Dewalt. I'll check Craigslist for estate sales and used tools.

Absolutely terrible set, the tools the self are adequate. The case they come one, you can’t close the case without all the tools falling out. Opened once, then returned. Would never reccomend and will never buy dewalt anything again

1.0 out of 5 stars Paid for new but received used set
Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2021

I paid for a new DeWalt mechanic tool set. It arrived in a very timely fashion however when I remove the set from the shipping box I noticed:
(1) the labeling on the tool set looked old and worn out. My initial thought was maybe a sat on the shelf a long time and was slid around a lot.
(2) when I opened it the casing several of the sockets from the top section fell out. As I tried to place them back in it's holding area they would not stay in. The sockets on the bottom level however were secure tightly in their chambers. At this point I began to really wonder if this was a used tool set.
(3) after pulling out a couple of the sockets from the bottom bin I noticed there was oil on a couple of them. At this point I was certain I was shipped a used to set. Needless to say this did not sit well with me. I immediately returned the item.

My final disappointment was to discover this item was not sold by an independent dealer but listed that it came from DeWalt.

As a final note I want to say I appreciated how Amazon handled the return and refund with ease.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality and design
Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2021

Haven’t used product yet but immediately upon opening, several sockets fell out of their holders. Returned the sockets into their holders ensuring they were seated correctly and closed the case. Opened case and same sockets fell out. Hopefully this poor quality doesn’t carry over into the tools themselves.

Finally got around to using more of the tools. Same sockets continue to fall out of case. Have to open and close case upside down to prevent this. Used the magnetic screw driver with removable tips for the first time today. I needed the screw driver handle to pry the tip holder out of its holder. Needed a pair of pliers to remove the tip from the holder. Had to place tip into screw driver and then force tip into a piece of wood to get it fully seated into the driver. Then had to use a pair of pliers to remove the tip from the driver. If that sounds like a lot just to use a screw driver that’s because it is a lot. Too damned much in my opinion.
Overall I’m very unhappy with this purchase. The tools either are too tight in the case or too loose. If you have to use other tools to get tools out of a case that’s a huge problem.
I’m a crane operator and am no stranger to tools. I’ve used Dewalt power tools before and had no problems. Wish I went with a different brand for this purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars I guess you have to double check you have all sockets and wrenches

You don’t know what the kit has or doesn’t have until you need it - my kit came with two identical 9/16 sockets - when I needed the 5/8. So now I have to make a special trip to get a socket that doesn’t match - send me a 5/8 socket. I have OCD lol

I gave a low rating because the item was missing parts and dewalt would not replace it. I came from Amazon boxed in 2 boxes and shrink wrapped. They said it had been opened and the part lost. It was boxed tighter than fort Knox so I believe it was a manufacturer defect

1.0 out of 5 stars The case is bad and the DeWALT customer service is worse
Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2020

The upper portion of the case does not hold the sockets tight. As you close the case the sockets fall out and you are unable to close the case. I don't know how they got it closed to ship it to me. I called DeWALT to get a replacement case and was told there is no warranty on the case. Without the case the tools are of little value. This tools set may be one one the worst things I ever bought.

1.0 out of 5 stars First time Dewalt Disappointment
Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2022

The ratchets does not have quick release as described. I’m actually surprised Dewalt would make ratchets without quick release.

More importantly, if you’re using the tool box that it comes with, you will spend a lot time putting the sockets back as a good amount will fall out of the slots when you open/close the tool box. For some reason the slot are not sized correctly.

1.0 out of 5 stars The case makes using this set painfully difficult
Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2022

The tools in this set are fine. The problem is that the case doesn't hold anything in place so when you open it up the sockets, wrenches and other tools fall out and scatter everywhere unless you are very careful and open up both sides symmetrically and slowly.

I threw the kit away.
