5.0 out of 5 starsA book that will help you work smarter, not harder and give you tools to achieve your wildest dreams
Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2018
Reading The Third Door changed my life. I really don’t know how to say it otherwise, and frankly struggle with words to describe how deeply the book has affected me since. As a college student myself, we are often fed generic pieces of advice as to how to obtain success and achieve the life of our dreams. “Don’t give up!” “Keep the faith” “Do what you love.” At times, the noise can become overwhelming, and more importantly, outdated!!!!!! In the age of the internet, so many things have changed! The Third Door tells the philosophies of both young and new entrepreneurs, from Bill Gates and Elliot Bisnow, about how they achieved ravishing success and what skills we can learn from their journeys.

Case in point: How do you separate yourself from thousands of other candidates applying online for a job? How do you gain mentors and find allies in business? How do you develop a network when you are just starting off and do not know anyone? How does one approach someone (either in person or online) and appear ambitious as opposed to simply unprofessional? How do you write a proper email? Is there a such thing as being over-persistent? If so, what is the line? How do you bounce back from rejection? Or create momentum for a project you are passionate about? What is the difference between a linear life and an exponential life? How can you create the latter? How do you "find your passion" or "follow your bliss?" Infiltrate echelons of business where you may be able to make an impact?

If the internet has produced a new wave of teachers, authors, and influencers, then Alex is the guru for us all - not just millennials, but ALL people seeking to achieve their dreams. The reason? What the Third Door provides more than anything is INFORMATION & ACCESS. Access to the personal anecdotes of some of the greatest leaders and innovators of our time, and sheer information - details about their path, past failures, practical (seriously practical) pieces of advice that anyone may apply in their own journey respective. These skills are transferrable no matter what you seek to do and will help you work smarter, not harder- giving you tools to achieve your wildest dream in a shorter span of time. In fact, it is a book you will need to read many times over to fully absorb its wisdom and one which I am so grateful to have found as early as I did. Thank you Alex for undertaking this journey to help us all succeed in greater and more meaningful ways. Your persistent emailing, crouching in bathrooms, chasing after some of the most brilliant people of our time is to have been well worth it.

I got this book thinking that I would be learning about how each famous person found their 3rd door. I like the concept of the 3rd door and do believe it is a fantastic way to look at life. However, the book isn't about what the 3rd door was for these people. It was more about him trying to get interviews with famous people and getting rejected. I hate to give the author one star because you can see how important writing this book was to him. I found about Alex from the Cathy Heller podcast when she interviewed him about this book and it was a fantastic interview. Just listen to the podcast and skip the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars A torturous book to read

Trust me, I REALLY wanted to like this book. I watched Alex’s videos and the concept of the book itself intrigued me so I went ahead and purchased it. However, I was under the impression that I was going to learn about how all these successful people used the so-called “third door,” but I was wrong. Instead, the author walks us through how he got interviews with these people, how he kept getting rejected, and how he remained committed to his mission even when things weren’t working out for him. It doesn’t matter to me how he got the interviews. All I care about is how these successful people used that third door, which was rarely discussed.

Books usually take me a week to read, but this has taken me more than a month even though it’s not a long book at all. I realized that it has taken me so long to finish because it is a pain to read. He exaggerates his stories so much that you start to question what really happened. Not only that, but he lacks credibility since his success is primarily defined by him getting this book published.

If you read the “Ditch the Line” part, that’s about as good as it gets. I am confused as to why this book has received 5 starts all around. He has clearly asked people to leave these reviews as a marketing tactic.

Again, I really wanted to like this book. I have read more than a dozen books this year already, and this is by far the one that has wasted my time the most. I now need to take a break from reading for a few weeks since this book was so bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!

My friend asked if I want to go to a speaker event (Alex Banayan's of course), which I couldn't make it to. She came back telling me how wholesome the event was and how Alex doesn't give those traditional/"selling" list of "XX steps to being successful" or "how to achieve your goals by doing XXX" but instead shared his experience in an authentic way, which inspired audience including herself.

So I got the book and started reading it in the morning, and like some of the readers, I could not put it down!!! I was on an emotional roller coaster as I read through each chapter and "go" through Alex's journey alongside with him, feeling frustrated at one moment but feel incredibly grateful at another. The last few chapters were truly bittersweet and just WHOLESOME. I don't want to spoil anything, but would 100% recommend this book to everyone!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for anyone looking to take an amazing journey into business and pursuing a 'wild' idea!

A friend of mine texted me randomly one day telling me "You HAVE to read this book called The Third Door - you could have written it." And I thought, why would I want to read something I could have written? But I trusted this friend so I bought it. And then I purchased and sent it to six of my friends after devouring it in one day - I literally could not put it down!

It was a fast and fascinating read - so much so, I read it again and the second go-round, I took the time to savor it, take notes, and really absorb the life lessons it taught.

I have never connected with a non-fiction book so much - there I was gasping, laughing, crying, and cheering as I read it. This book is absolutely incredible. But more than that, so is the author, Alex Banayan. I was 47 when I read it and had been on a 'similar' journey in my quest to make a documentary and I learned sooooo much from this book about success both in business and life. It was like a spiritual experience for me and I enjoyed and appreciated the intergenerational learning opportunity it provided me!

I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about hustling with gratitude and love and how pursuing a dream can be life-changing not only for the person pursuing it but for those they let in on their journey.

Thank you, Alex, for allowing us the opportunity to learn in a fun and engaging way through your story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Energizing, Inspiring, Insightful -- Success and Failure are NOT opposites!

I first read this book at the recommendation of my former Vice President. I have now purchased this book 9 times--6 times for others, and three times for me (English version, Spanish version, audiobook). This book has traveled to four countries with me, and has been the subject of countless conversations.

You can read just about any review on here for a summary of the book, but what I found most interesting about how this story is told is the VULNERABILITY the author shows in writing it.

He is fully open an honest about all of his (many!) failings and missteps as he struggles to find a way to achieve his dream, and in doing so gives us a unique, one-of-a-kind perspective into success. He shows us that the only was to true success to to KEEP TRYING, over and over again, through all of your failings (learnings!). This perspective is supported by several of the interviewees including Quincy Jones who said, "You can't get an A if you're afraid of getting an F. Growth comes from mistakes. Mistakes are your greatest gift."

I think this brings me to one of my favorite insights in the book: "I'd always seen success and failure as opposites, but now I could see that they were just different results of the same thing--trying." It's the TRYING that is the most important thing.

In "Thinking in Bets" by Annie Duke, the author argues that skill and luck are always both present in the outcomes that we see from our decisions, and that sometimes we fail even when we make the right decision. I think that holds just as true here. Alex Banayan shows us that if we keep trying, sometimes we will fail and sometimes we will succeed. But none of it will happen if we don't try!

Even if this is the only thing you internalize from reading the book, I'd say it's well worth it. But I'd wager that you'll love reading this as much as I did, and as much as I still do.

Here's to your success!

5.0 out of 5 stars INSPIRATION is rarer than information - this book has BOTH

Give this to your high-schooler. Give this to your graduate. Give this to anyone who is driven for MORE but hasn't figured out what "more" is.
.
As an entrepreneur, this book is the kind that I will return to repeatedly. I have plenty of business books - but "if information was all you needed, everyone would be rich and skinny."
.
The incredible value in THIS book beyond the others is that it provides the EMOTIONAL drive - the inspiration and vision - to keep going after the hardest challenges. In a n easy to read, relatable way, Alex takes you on a journey through his quest to write the book HE always wanted, by interviewing some of the most successful - and INACCESIBLE - people in the world. He shares not only strategy for persistence and strategy but most importantly - how he used mindset and determination. As someone who must face fear and not-enough-ness and myriad other "mindset" challsnges on the daily, the humanity and vulnerability of this book set it apart from its peers. Reading this book, not only do I feel perfectly normal for having doubts and being afraid, I also feel INSPIRED to keep going, to try again, and to ask for help.
.
A great book for entrepreneurs at any level - information is abundant but staying inspired is going to be the key to our success. Thanks Alex!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The book that showcases Bill Gates as "the white whale"
Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2018
Verified Purchase
Featuring computer magnate Bill Gates as the elusive white whale.

Showcasing The Price is Right as a vehicle to success.

Adding in amazing adventures across the globe.

In Alex Banahan’s first book, The Third Door, he attempts to find out how successful people got their start. He calls it the “third door,” through which these successful folks became successful. He says there is always a first door, where most people wait to get in. Then, there is the second door — the VIP door — where celebrities get in. Finally, there is the third door, be it through an alley, window, or some other unique way, where other people can gain access to an event.

The story reads almost like a novel and is hard to put down. Cameos are made by Tim Ferriss, Cal Fussman, and Larry King. They are all a part of his mission to discover the secrets to getting started. As you piece things together, you see his friend Kevin throughout the book. Kevin, of course, is Kevin The Manager on Cal Fussman’s podcast. Knowing some of the backstory helps with the real story that Banayan tells.

One thing he learned from the person who became his mentor, Elliott Bisnow, is that you should never take your phone out in a meeting. Bisnow became Banayan’s mentor and ends up featured prominently in the book. Bisnow is an entrepreneur who also started the Summit Leadership Conferences, which are held at various places at various times but feature prominent leaders and entrepreneurs. Banayan gets an offer from Bisnow that could change his life … and leads to a moment of choice.

Bill Gates, founder of Windows, is Banayan’s white whale for much of the story. During his conversation with Gates, Banayan figures out some things, but not necessarily from the context of what Gates shares. It’s a great interview and an eye-opening experience for Banayan on his mission.

As it goes on, you find that the pursuit is about much more than the pursuit of money. This is the passionate pursuit to find the meaning of why people become successful. This is the story of a seven-year process, one that was supposed to last a few months. If you like your nonfiction to read like fiction, Banayan’s story is worth your time. It’s a page turner and one that is tough to put down. You’ll learn about passion, pursuit, and personality as you read this book. You also gain some tidbits throughout that can help you with your passion project, as well.

And remember, there is always -- ALWAYS -- a Third Door.

The Third Door has 110% changed my life! I never read books at all until I read The Third Door. Alex Banayan is an extremely special individual and hearing his journey is absolutely Amazing! The Third Door was a gift to me - Hands down the greatest physical gift I have ever received! With my name also being Alex, I genuinely felt as that I was in the book as Alex's shadow for the entire ride!

My #1 Goal of 2019 is to meet Alex and I fully intend on making that happen! All things are possible and Alex does a great job in illustrating that through The Third Door with immense hard work, steady and persistent determination, and huge amounts of sacrifice. Shooting your shot and taking calculated action is exactly how he made his dream come true. Everyone can make their dreams come true!

After reading The Third Door, I uncovered a passion for reading that I never in my wildest dreams thought I would have. I can't thank Alex enough for what this book has done for me and the impact it has made on my life! I look forward to meeting him this year and I would hope that after he hears my testimony he would allow me to tell how his book has inspired me in front of the masses!

By the way, just to leave a review I spent $50.00 so I could be eligible to leave a review on Amazon. The Third Door is now my gift of choice to all who have the desire to reach and make their goals and dreams become reality!

5.0 out of 5 stars A narrative you can place yourself in
Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2019

I expected the Third Door to be just like any other business book, slightly monotonous and impersonal yet still holding its fair share of actionable insights. What I got instead, was a page-turning narrative that read like a thriller. The story the author tells us is not so much about the people he interviews as it is about his own journey and what his adventures taught him about what is truly possible. Alex Banayan takes you through his journey from start to finish; his successes, his failures, his frustrations, and his happiest moments. He fearlessly displays all of his most heartbreaking moments and by doing so not only shows us the possibilities that lie dormant within all of us but also demonstrates the sheer perseverance, hard work, and sacrifice necessary to make any worthwhile dream a reality.
While it did indeed contain some very worthwhile pieces of advice including Tim Ferriss' cold email template for contacting busy people, Bill Gates' negotiation strategies, and Sugar Ray Leonard's hidden reservoir of strength; the beauty of the book lies not in its cast of characters, nor even in the advice it gives, but in the horizon of possibilities that it opens for anybody with a dream they want to pursue. It humanizes the ultra-successful and lets us know that if we truly want something with all our heart, to the point of being willing to endure countless humiliations and frustrations in order to attain it, then we too can join their ranks.
