4.0 out of 5 starsAn enjoyable but flawed story.

Not 4 stars but maybe 3.5 would be better. Abnett seems to be repeating earlier things in this series in these later stories and it doesnt work for me at all. The drama seems to take a clear frontline in this story and the drama feels like the quality I would see in modern tv shows. I feel like after every drama moment there should be some music that plays to let us know that we just read a dramatic moment or some big dramatic reveal or whatever and I REALLY dont like that at all. Like the whole dun dun duuuuun music. The drama should be mixed well with the combat like it was in earlier stories. It isnt here. But I wanna mention again Abnett seems to be repeating himself in ways. Nothing I can directly say without spoilers so I wont. But you'll notice it. That's not a good sign. But one more book and it should be all settled. I love this series so much but I realize they cant all be winners.

1.0 out of 5 starsThe worst of the series by far.
Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2018
This is by far the worst book of the Gaunt's Ghost saga.

I'd like to start off after saying such a thing by pointing out that i've been a rabid fan of the series. I always recommended it as a go-to series to get people interested in Warhammer 40k for the fact that it so easily depicts how tragic life is for the average soldier of the setting. Each character is fleshed out and made a fascinating little figure to love or loathe alike, even the smallest "main" characters are well described and given enough time that even someone such as myself that doesn't like having to juggle dozens of figures of major focus can admire or absolutely hate them. It is a trait few authors truly do so well.

On top of this, Dan Abnett's grasp of combat (especially science-fiction combat) is second to none. His attention to detail is equally second to none in the fine points as he rarely gets into the guts and gore so much that I find it unappealing to read yet plenty graphic enough that you can truly envision how genuinely horrific the cast's struggle to survive truly is.

That is why I'm giving this such a low score. Because I know Dan Abnett is capable of SO MUCH more than this book puts on display. The ending's "Cliffhanger" was absolutely lousy, we recieve absolutely 0 closure on any of the major questions or subplots brought up in this book (of which there are at least a half-dozen I counted). I was genuinely rendered speechless in all the worst ways when I realized the book had ended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Abnett is still on fine form

If you’re new to the world of Warhammer 40,000 in general, and the Gaunt’s Ghosts series of novels in particular, then this definitely isn’t the place to start. For those who have followed the Tanith First and Only from book to book, “The Warmaster” is the long-awaited (five years in the making!) next installment in the saga. The book picks up where “Salvation’s Reach” left off back in 2012. Abnett’s writing and plotting skills are as strong as ever, and seeing the Ghosts again is like visiting old friends and family. There’s a fair old amount of shooty-death-kill, but also a ton of character development. If I have a major criticism of the book, it’s that many of the plot lines are simply left hanging unresolved; yes, I know you’ve got to leave something for the next novel, but it does seem as though for every question answered three more are raised. I can only hope that Dan Abnett is sitting down at his laptop and already working on the next book in the series, because we’re left with one hell of a cliffhanger.

5.0 out of 5 stars As always, Mr. Abnett delivers

Obviously, if you have made it this far in the series, you know that Dan Abnett is a serious author of Warhammer.
The reason being, in my mind, is that he brings humanity to what is normally a universe devoid of anything but mindless fighting and platitudes about duty.
He makes complex battle scenes unerstandable and very real. At the same time, his characters are relatable and human, be they rogue or paragon.
In the last several books in the series, Abnett has endeavored to describe a working and 'realistic' version of the Imperial Guard wherein soldiers are expected to live more than a few hours and therefore are able to develop relationships and have character progression.
I imagine most people who see this will have read the other 14 books in the series, but if you are a wh40k fan or you enjoy military sci-fi, do yourself a favor and pick up Dan Abnett's work.

At times classic abnett - replete with characters you have invested in, skullduggery and compulsive action thats feels like the bastard offspring of star wars and the eastern front. But there is no real closure, too many loose ends, it feels like half of a plot and half a really good book. Maybe the plate spinning with all the Horus Heresy etc has perhaps diluted the focus on the first and favorite series?

3.0 out of 5 stars Where's the 3rd Act?!

I love Gaunt's Ghosts. It's been my guilty pleasure to reread the entire series every couple of years. Dan Abnett paints gorgeous imagery and if you're new to WH40K, Gaunt's Ghosts and the Eisenhorn trilogy will set you straight.

Now, after years of waiting to see what my Tanith: First and Only are up to, I devoured the book in 2 days. This book ends on a MAJOR cliff hanger for just about every single character. It feels like you can see the finish line and then you're hit with the literary equivalent of a mid-season finale.

Throne help Dan, he'd better not make me wait another 5 years for half a book. It's a must if you're a fan, but it doesn't wrap up like his previous books. Fair warning.

3.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not like his original series books

Definitely not like his original series books. This book to me was pretty meta, meaning it steers away from what we are used to with intimate battle moments, rather this book is more political and relationship conflicts rather than too many battles as we know it.

I get what he’s trying to do, to move the story along, but there were some questionable events in the story that didn’t sit too well for me and felt like a rush job causing additional drama that I felt wasn’t as meaningful and dramatic as others.

But that’s just me. I love and have all his novels, but this one is kinda meh to me compared to others.

But don’t take my word for it

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read and an enjoyable return to the Ghosts

It’s been a while since I last visited the Ghosts, so had to look up some names to remember what happened in previous books. Gaunt’s progress and steady ascension as well as the dynamics of his team is always a good read.

There are some pacing issues, and some character issues which was a little jarring, which I won’t spoil here. Just felt that a few characters were not really utilised or grew much during the telling of this story. Hopefully that is no the case for the next book.

Overall a good reintroduction to the campaign, as well as a good bridge to the next book which I already bought.

Abnett is fantastic, and there are some Great Abnett moments in here. But honestly... dont give GW your money. This isn't a full book. It's some form of nonsense that is maybe half a book they demanded to publish. The story is incomplete and somewhat disappointing. It's either a portion of the last book, or a part of whatever was the next. Truly disappointing in the way only Games Workshop can disappoint... then laugh at you while rubbing your money on their faces.

....IF you know the Anarch was just around the corner. Without that knowledge, it isn't very good. Understand, the Warmaster is pure setup for the Anarch which may be his best work for Black Library. Just be aware of that fact.
