A good way to get introduced into the franchise

The Founding is my first attempt to get into Warhammer 40k after being recommended to the franchise by many of my friends. I was fascinated with the premise of Warhammer 40k but couldn’t afford the game itself, so I was told to start with the founding and see what I think from there. At the moment I'm roughly a fourth of the way through the book and so far It's been a real page turner for me. If you’re new to the series as much as I am, if you like the Gears of War franchise, The Mass Effect series, World War I stories, and syfy in general, then you’ll love The Founding as its filled with that kind of stuff. The book can take a while to read (which really depends on how fast of a reader you are.) Other than that it’s a very good book and I highly recommend getting it.

Book is great, but really disappointed by the seller. They jammed a too large book Into a too small box, which ripped the back cover and folded pages. I tried to email them and got no response. I would recommend the book, but I will not buy from Book Depository again.

Not 'just' another war story

While on the one hand these three books are genre rubbish, a mix of military sci-fi drivel leavened with a dash of Warhammer 40,000`s blend of bloody gothic horror, the vast of characters have a lot of humanity spread among them. Most of the characters act with an internal drive greater than "because the plot required it at the time." This is most obvious in the third book in this omnibus, "Necropolis."

This was my first foray into 40k fiction and I was pleasantly surprised. The narrative slips along quite nicely and you feel well immersed into the setting yet it doesn’t feel too over done. The strength here are the characters as it doesn’t take long for you to buy into them and understand their motivation. I can’t comment on the wider plot arcs, but as a stand alone series, very enjoyable and I was pleased I picked this up.

Wirklich gut geschrieben: Spannend und kurzweilig, dabei aber (zumindest wenn man bedenkt, dass es sich um einen 40k-Roman handelt) durchaus mit tiefgründigen Charakteren und einer stimmigen Welt, in der das Grauen des ewigen Krieges passend beschrieben wird.
Vor allem "The founding" (man lernt die Anfänge Gaunt's und seiner Truppe kennen) und "Necropolis" (epische Schlacht um eine "Hive-City" sind wirklich lesenswert und auch durchaus jemandem zu empfehlen, der nicht eingefleischter 40k-fan ist.
Und: das Englisch von Dan Abnett in der Originalfassung ist leicht zu verstehen.
