How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

For anyone who has noticed the quality and supply of water these days, this is full of information not available widely. If one has not noticed these things, better wake up and prepare oneself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good information for conserving water

Irrigated farming is using a large percent of freshwater from rivers in most regions. Modern farming, or the Green Revolution, is described in this book as water intensive for meat and dairy (hundreds of gallons per pound of meat). In hot and arid regions where city use of water competes with farming, even fruits, nuts, and vegetables become unsustainable and better grown on farms with natural rainfall. Damming rivers has led to decline of inland lakes in Asia and Africa, also covered in detail. In the US politics has a special role. The normal strengths of American government, the division of power and authority between the national government and state governments, or limited national government powers, could mean slow progress on making freshwater use highly efficient, and states will wrangle over water rights for decades into the future. Books on natural resources like this one provide many of the facts, context, and strategies that US Senators, US Representatives, state legislators, and activists/reformers can use. Water resource science and management is likely to become an important high school class topic and university major.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super readable, fascinating; students love it

I use this for a split upper-level undergrad/Masters course and students and I love it. It's very readable, with short, engaging case studies; and they do a fabulous job integrating science, social context, interactions, etc. In the process, they illuminate a tremendous amount of the integrative complexity, and possibility for improvement, in water issues around the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant revision of a 2004 book

I have the original book but this one has been extensively revised and really it makes it into a new book. As I remember it, the emphasis on the first was serious depletion of groundwater aquifers due to overpumping.

The emphasis of this second book seems at least one stage further on: Pearce now emphasises how much damage dams and irrigation systems have caused in some places and that this has often led to unexpected displacement of downstream populations when their rivers dry up. This, in turn, is a driver for the recent surge of migration to Europe, in particular.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is real, it’s happening now, and it’s very frightening. Read it!

Excellent but tough - hard to take in more than small doses. The number and volume of examples of already visible effects grinds one down, and I now recognise and really understand the meaning of ‘Environmental Grief/Anxiety’ syndrome, which is apparently increasing among professional ecologist colleagues. Those already fully ‘woke’ to what global climate change is capable of hitting us with don’t need to read this; we’ve been shouting about it for several years. Deniers are unlikely to be moved or impressed. It would be wonderful though if all thinking people in the middle ground read it and really take its message in. We don’t have very long!

Fred Pearce's book, "When the rivers run dry" is very well written and structured making this extremely important subject very approachable. It is divided into many sections of 5 to 7 pages many of which can be read independently. Each case study of water situations adn problems around the world is very clearly presented and readable with much background and factual information.
