1.0 out of 5 starsNot secure!! Can be opened with scissors!
Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2020
Got this to hold medications and knives after my daughter had an attempted suicide. We thought it was working great for 7 months until my daughter’s boyfriend told us she can get in without the key or code!! She used a pair of scissors jammed into the key. See video! WTF!
It is a nice little safe for what is meant to be. This safe in not fireproof, water proof, thief proof or heavy. It is simply a safe to keep valuables or papers secure and away from prying eyes or someone looking for an easy score going through your stuff in a hurry. It locks fine and the electric combo is easy to setup and use. For more security it can be bolted to the wall or floor from the inside of the safe. Id recommend this as it is easily picked up to be walked out the door if anyone wished to do that. It will keep out a normal kid, teenager, or anyone who wants to try and get in without leaving marks on it. A real thief or a real person with time and tools can break in with enough perseverance. If it was walked out and dropped from a high enough height, it would probably break open. But that is why it can be bolted.
All this may sound like a negative review but honestly I just want everyone to know this is a fine basic safe and my purchase would be made again. For the price and what i wanted, this is a fine buy. Secure for my purposes and does what it says it will do very well. Enough room for most important things in life. Jewelry, a hand gun, papers, or whatever. Has a shelve that can divide the storage in half. For a basic safe, I think amazon did a fine job with this one.
The size allows me to fit what I was planning to put inside. Next to a sleep number bed the height is just above the frame and it's workable as an additional night stand. The top shelf is easy to reach for items you need to be able to reach from bed.
The electronic lock works well so far and the two mechanical backup keys are sturdy. The walls are single layer steel but certainly of a heavier gauge than sheet metal on any car. The locking bolts are sturdy enough that they're oversized (a good thing) in relation to the rest of the construction. The electronic pad can take 3-8 length keys. The keypad can beep or be silenced and there are not-brighter-than-necessary lights that give visual feedback. The keypad has a lockout feature for some deterrence. There are pre-drilled holes in the back and bottom to allow permanent fixture to the wall/floor.
In purchasing a safe at this price point there should be a lower expectation of security. The bolts on the door lock are sound but with the single wall construction otherwise on the door I believe it would be easy to penetrate the unit above and below the lock with a sledgehammer. The weight was manageable to carry inside by one barely-in shape person, which while convenient also suggests bolting the safe down if you're worried about it ever walking away. The mounting holes as well are larger than they need to be and there isn't a mechanism (other than a carpet for the floor) to seal them with what the safe includes. If keeping someone from learning the nature of the contents by peeping through the mounting holes on the back and bottom is a concern it's something to consider. The back wall is more spot than seam welded but adequate in relation to the door.
My biggest gripe with the unit is the door fitment and specifically how it rubs on the bottom. It takes a good tug on the door at its rest state to pull it open, which makes a distinctive noise as well. If pulling up on door while opening it, there's almost no rub and the noise is nearly inaudible. While acting quickly in the middle of the night it could make more sound than you might prefer (but at this price point there's probably a fair bit of deviation between the units). Another shortcoming was that only three anchor bolts were included when the unit has 4 holes on both the back and floor for mounting, and one of those bolts is so wedged under the bottom door frame that I haven't been able to pry it loose. This may be affecting the door fitment.
In all, the benefits of the size, top shelf position and cost make this a satisfying purchase. Is it fireproof? Briefly frame retardant I'd guess at best. Will it take someone with a sledgehammer more than a minute to be able to fit their hand inside the door? Likely not. But will it be effective in keeping children and not-too-determined house cleaners & home visitors out? For this price that's a great application. Will it stop a projectile? Probably not all of them.
I usually like the "Amazon Basics" product line and have had good stuff at a good price. This time I got a dead digital safe on the first try but Amazon quickly sent out a replacement that was 100% working. I did buy the extended warranty...jic. the main reason I like this unit is affordable and bootable! You can bolt it to a wall or floor, comes with heavy anchors but you'll need lag bolts if you're going into a stud vs concrete. I'm sure you can defeat the door with a large enough crow bar and time or just cut through the thing with a cordless whiz wheel. Now that said...most thief's want in and out easy...this is not that, especially bolted down. For the money it will work just fine and the size, 1.3 more than sufficient for guns, money, jewelry, documents and has a shelf to split the safe in half or remove for full use of larger items. It is not fire proof but for the money, you know that going in. It is to prevent theft. Pay 3x's as much and you get fire for maybe a whole hour...pay 10x's as much and you get 5 hours burn time. Do the math...just increase your insurance premium and save the weight and headache. Good enough for basic safety and simple storage like a gun or travelling cash. 1 star came off because of the DOA as the battery compartment is a little cheap in all plastic and metal tray might have been a little wiser for durability sake. We'll see how it holds up over time.
I see many questions posted about the fire and water resistance of this safe. To be very clear, it should not be considered in cases where fire or flood concerns are high. Anything stored inside would not be protected. It is also not that heavy, meaning it could be easily carried away by a thief. This safe can be secured to a floor or wall which would slow down a thief needing to be on the move quickly. It could probably be easily broken open with a sledgehammer and determined effort or maybe a crowbar, though I have not tried it. It has two locking barrels on the door. Some more expensive safes incorporate more locking barrels. I find this safe to be very adequate for my needs. More on that below.
This safe is great for things like keeping items from prying eyes in your home such as sensitive documents, electronic storage drives, spare credit cards, etc., away from children or nosey visitors. I particularly use two of the 1.8 cubic foot models as medication safes in my home. I can control the access to meds while keeping my loved one out of harm's way. My loved one is not likely to try to break into it.
Each safe comes with two keys. The keys were not locked inside the safe, but were in the plastic pouch with the manual. The safe does come with a default code set, but no batteries installed. So you will need to use one of the keys to open it initially, install batteries, then reset the code. The code can be 3-8 numbers long, it's up to you.
If you elect to use the key only, you should still reset the code because the default code is printed in the manual and could be found by a snooper. Add a repeating reminder to your calendar to change the batteries. Open the safe on a regular basis to check the contents. Again, if you are concerned about mold or rust, or other types of deterioration, then check the contents of the safe on a regular basis. The keypad will also alert you if the batteries are low. Separate the two keys and put them somewhere safe, or give one to a trusted relative/friend. Do not keep both keys together, many reviewers seem to have fallen victim to misplaced keys. The instructions are pretty clear and easy to follow.
As long as you realize this is a basic safe, not Fort Knox, then you may find it useful. This gave me exactly what I needed without having to spend three times the money.
At $100 I wouldn't expect much deterrence in a safe. This isn't fireproof, waterproof and the outer layer is fairly thin it could be punctured with force. What this safe brings is overall volume, weight and the ability to be mounted. I don't have this mounted yet as I don't have a permanent place to secure it, but where it is now I think I'll secure it to the wall once I'm happy. It weighs pretty hefty without anything. With at least 10-20lbs of items a thief may have difficulty walking out with it. It has no ridges that it if not held from the bottom it can slip off your grip.
I have a 15" x 11" fireproof document holder and it's a tad too long. What I can do is fold the extra space and place it on the very bottom. The shelf can be easily knocked up and over if you don't have anything placed on it with weight. Volume wise it was way bigger than I needed it to be. That's fine as I can add more things of value. It's hidden from plain site and I have it covered with furniture and objects that It provides some kind of deterrence while getting into with easy access.
My husband and I are elderly so we're taking lots of meds. I was uncomfortable just keeping these in shoe boxes - including narcotics. All of my pill bottles fit on the top shelf and my husband's on the bottom shelf. The keypad is super fast to use to open the safe.
The set-up was extremely easy, and THANK YOU, Amazon Basics, for a manual that is in a large font and easy to read and follow!
One of the bell-shaped nuts on the attachment bolts was missing, the only reason for a 4-star review instead of a 5-star. Since I did not intend to mount the safe to wall or floor, this did not affect me, but quality control should mean no missing parts.
I bought this safe a year ago there are good things about it and there are not so good things about it as long as you can keep up with the key and make sure the batteries stay fresh you're good but if the batteries go dead and you misplaced the keys you're out of luck because there is no replacement key and the safe takes an act of a crane and five people to break into it I lost my key and my medication was in it and we had to break into it it took us 6 hours to break into that safe it is the most sturdy safe I think I've ever owned and I will probably buy another one and I will make sure I put the key where I can find it and I will always make sure it has fresh batteries but I do recommend this safe as far as being a good safe
Dont lose your owners manual! There isnt one for this model on the web, only for the 0.5 cubic ft model which has a lcd display. Anyway the biggest piece of info you need is:
TO TURN OFF THE BEEP-hold * for 5-7 seconds and all three lights will illuminate to confirm the beep is off.
Or you can do like many have said on amazon and take the whole thing apart and find the wire to the speaker and cut it....lmao
Now for my review. As long as you mount this thing properly its just as good as a $1000 safe in reguards to burglary, you will want a better safe to protect from fire and flood. I mounted this to a 45lbs. 20inx20in steel plate that is drilled into the studs with the exposed bolt heads grinded round.
It's not water or fireproof. It's not even all that heavy, due to the overall thinness. Given time, it could easily be cut open so be sure to secure it in place to prevent it from walking off.
With that said, it's a good little safe and will keep out the lazy thief just looking for a quick score. And I'd also suggest picking up a smaller safe (or bag) that's water/fireproof to go inside for your important stuff. My only real complaint is that the price went down between buying it and writing this review...
