4.0 out of 5 starsVictor Vale will always be my fave
Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2018
Ah, Vengeful. The long-awaited sequel to Vicious. In some ways, I'm satisfied. In others, disappointed. Though it did not blow my mind, it was worth the wait. The last hundred pages or so is where the story really kicks into high gear, but it's over before you know it.

I loved all of the characters (old and new) and Schwab really expands on the concept of EOs in this book. I felt like I was watching a slow-burn Marvel movie the entire time. I did find the frequent time jumps between past and present jarring, and it took a while to settle into the strange rhythm. Also, I'm not a fan of the repetitive writing style. I don't need to know that Syd slowed, stopped, halted. It was annoying, irritating, irksome. The pacing was on the lagging end for my taste, but Schwab really did meticulously work her way up to tying everything together for the grand finale.

2.0 out of 5 starsAn Uncalled for Sequel
Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2018
This was an uncalled for sequel in all sense of the word for me. It was 480 pages of pure nothing. I like Vicious for what it was, not my favorite but it was alright but this was not good.

We got a lot of backstory for characters that just wasn't needed, mainly Eli. We were introduced to new characters who had what could have been promising story arcs but ultimately fell flat, mainly Marcella. Out of all the new characters the only one I felt intrigued about was June. Victor, Sydney, and Mitch all had boring arcs. That is what this book was bland and boring. By the time I reached the climax of the story my entire being wanted this story to be over.

In conclusion this was all around a disappointing read for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful character arcs offered with slow-burn precision

I finished Vengeful by V.E. Schwab over the weekend. The first Villains book, Vicious, is a serious fave of mine, and I went into Vengeful with a lot of expectations. I got something very different from the book, and while it wasn't what I thought it'd be...this one sticks with me more.

It's primarily driven by powerful character arcs offered with slow-burn precision. There's a character in this one who is definitely not the good guy, but her POV kept making me nod with understanding. As with the first book, Schwab does a remarkable job of diving into the why of the villains.

So, basically, it's a hyper character-driven novel and deliciously heady.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sequel you will love!

Wow, what a ride. Right after I finished reading Vicious I didn’t wait long at all to order Vengeful. Since I enjoyed Vicious so much, I had high expectations for this sequel and it did not disappoint. I have become a big fan of Schwab’s writing. She just keeps you reading on and on. There is never a dull moment.

I’m truly satisfied with the ending of this duology -I’m crossing my fingers Schwab writes a third book at some point though- I love all of the new and old characters. I could have used more story development around previous characters I became fond of, but, overall, I loved the way the story came to be. I wasn’t a big fan of the back and forth timelines though. It was okay in Vicious, but in this one, it felt a bit exhausting. You would be reading a few pages about something that took place 3 years ago and then the next chapter would be about something that took place 2 weeks ago with a whole different character and it would sometimes be another 10 chapters before you would go back to reading about that same character.I would often have to flip back in the book to try and remember what was going on in that character’s story. Despite this, I still give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and I would highly recommend it to anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait!

wow
that ending
send help for my emotional state

I love how the individual threads with the different POVs intersected finally and wow the ending left room for mooooore which i love of course but ouuuuch some parts just hurt. my poor emotions.
Apart from my regular faves of Syd, Victor and Mitch and Eli i loved all the new characters we were introduced to. They were all so intriguing and I was riveted by their back stories and how their present stories unfolded.

Marcella was an amazing character. as was June and they're so different but equally interesting. I'm particular interested in learning more about one character, Rios, I hope we see her again.

Again we have the same non linear timeline, where we go back to 5 years ago then back to the present, as it morphs into a sort of countdown to the big showdown! and it was worth the wait! The timeline shifts were well done, i was never confused. It only had me excited for getting to the present day events to see how it would all play out and i wasn't disappointed but my poor heart!

I hope we get more in this world because my heart needs mending ok!

I was gifted the first book 'Vicious' by a friend and could not stop myself from getting the second one! I like the author's take on mutants/super humans in this book and the system she created! The storyline was very interesting and I liked the ending too but I so wish there was a 3rd book and the story continued! :(

5.0 out of 5 stars Really hope this series continues. SO GOOD

I enjoyed this sequel to one of my favorite books ever. Although Victor was still a prominent character in this book, I do wish we could have had as much of his perspective as in the first book. However, it gave other great characters like Sydney and June a chance to shine. I can't wait to learn more about June if the series continues. Dominic's major action scene was awesome and it was neat to get a closer look at the logistics of his power. It's fun to see everyone's powers evolving as the timeline moves forward. The ending was GREAT and although I was not really interested in Marcella's storyline throughout most of the book it did pay off (~~~minor spoilers ahead!!~~~) in her epic face off against Eli. I also really enjoyed Syd's internal struggle over Serena's fate but I wish Vengeful had as many moral quandaries like this as Vicious did. Overall it was a great read and I am dying to see what comes next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sequel

As always, Victoria Schwab crafted a thrilling, twisting, exciting novel in Vengeful. The concept from Vicious is honed to a razor's edge. The rivalry from the original is not lost here and is so much more palpable. The extra layers on top are so satisfying and the Pulp-Fiction-esque structure keeps you guessing to the end. The ending itself is so complete that my heart is happy, but I wish there could be another story for Victor Vale. 5 stars and current book of 2019 for me. If you haven't read it, READ IT NOW. You're welcome.

This was a perfect companion to Vicious. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. V E Schwab has made villains you empathize with (sometimes despite yourself - I didn't need all these emotions about Eli Ever tyvm), deeply complex characters with individual personalities and motivations. Her writing is sharp, and it fits the subject matter perfectly. The new characters introduced were wonderful, the women of this book were a BIG 2018 Mood, and I was left with mingled emotions at the end, but also with satisfaction. Can't recommend it enough.

This book is a fantastic sequel to Vicious. She continues to tell the story going back and forth between past and present, but ties it all up in the end. I felt this book was more fast paced than Vicious, which isn’t a bad thing. There was more going on in this book aside from the upcoming battle between Eli and Victor like in the first book. My only regret is that I didn’t have a friend reading it with me so I could take to someone about it while I was reading it. Would totally recommend. I can’t wait for the next one!

What a ride! But I still have so many questions. What was June's deal with Sidney? Why did she want to meet her in the first place? And will Sid and Mitch ever meet up with Victor again? And why did Dom have to die? I liked him. Will Eli stay dead? Or will his body start healing again despite being frozen?

Isn’t a sign of a good book when you get done reading it and you just can’t wait to start the next one in the series. Unfortunately, I don’t know if there is going to be another one. I really hope so because the characters in this book were wonderful. Some of them you loved. Some of them you hated. Some of them you didn’t quite know how to feel. All I know for sure is that I want to get to know them even more and see what continues to happen in this universe.
