I've been wanting to read this since it came out, and now I can say that I'm familiar with all three of this author's cozy series. It didn't take long to get to know the characters in this book. I just love Prof. Maxwell, what a sweetheart! Jim who works at the store is such a nice guy and Helen, well she's not done anything to make me like her lol. Florrie is a great character and I really enjoy her sleuthing with the beat officer, Sgt. Jonquille. For once, the sleuth wasn't being warned off the case or made to feel like she was getting tossed into jail for snooping around. Florrie was determined to clear her wonderful boss's name of murder. She did seem to be cautious though. I was cheering when she ran home from the bookstore one day to buy and change out locks at her house.
The showdown with the killer was great, and I love how Florrie's new friend Jacquie, a former wife of Prof. Maxwell, got to help out. I hadn't guessed the killer until Florrie started piecing things together. I enjoyed how each person got a turn at explaining parts of the case at the party thrown for Maxwell. And I nearly forgot to mention another favorite character, DuBois the butler. I wasn't sure how I'd like him when we first met him the day that Florrie moved into the carriage house. But the more I read, his speech and things he did were so much like a certain favorite TV comedy butler who starred with a hairdresser-turned-nanny back in the 80s-90s. It was like I could hear his voice from then on, lol.
