How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

What I liked about this book was it was just plain good old story telling. People have said well no one cross's the ocean in 4 days or sail boats cannot go fast or the people met and became friends right away. It is a story and as much of the SF being written now, I think it is refreshing to not see constant space battles and mass ships being blown out of space. This was a people story and I enjoyed how the story unfolded little bit by little bit. I would say if your looking ray guns and missiles and ships being destroyed, then this book is not for you. If you want a change of pace and a people story, I think you will like it. I am going for the next book.

3.0 out of 5 starsNew writer, exciting but flawed execution.
Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2018
A promising new writer, a fun (though flawed) story, and some interesting ideas.
First, the writer keeps the action going and, for me at least, engaged the reader sufficiently that I wanted to keep reading.
Second, there are numerous logical and literary flaws that hopefully can be improved upon with a bit of editing, a little research, good beta-readers, and additional experience.
Finally, there were several intriguing ideas that worked for me. If the writer will consider the excellent advice given in many of the lower-rated reviews, I expect we will have more interesting work ahead.

The aliens came. No weapons could affect them. They kidnapped almost everyone. Then the rather unlikely savior Dean the accountant takes off with Carey, his kidnapped-by-aliens neighbor's dog, on a mission to save the world and humanity.
An unexpectedly great read, the book is a maze of conspiracies, counter conspiracies and betrayal. Just when you think you've got most of it figured out, another level of complexity appears. Starts a little bit slowly, giving you a chance to get to know our hero. Stick with it and you'll be happy you did.

Had an opportunity to read the second book also. Some great plots and twists. End comes way too fast. Would have liked to learn a little more about the changes on earth and the colonists. Maybe this will show in book three. Both books are worth the time and I look forward to more tales from this author......

A little fast when moving between events and a little more development would be appropriate. Maybe this should have been two books rather than one. What happens when the stuff you need is not right in front of you. Was Dean just lucky. Liked the interaction between the characters. Did anyone talk with Ray's family?

I love sci-fi series so when I noticed the Survivors series 18 books I had to give it a try. Let me preface this review by saying that I am now ready book ten in the series so you know I like it. I have been reading sci-fi almost exclusively for the past 20 years. I have read some great books and some not so great. I really enjoy all the different ways that writers choose to tell their stories. Some spend all their efforts to go deeply into the nuts and bolts of the technology, this author is not one of those. Most of the tech and gadgets are introduced and used but very barely if at all explained. Then you have authors that spend all their time explaining how and why the characters do what they do. This author is not one of those either.
Nathan Hystad is somewhere in the middle of both. He gives you some background about the tech but really lets you fill in the gaps. I find that I'm fine with that because he gives me enough to accept the tech and not be too concerned with the mechanics. Not something that always works for me. If you want really hard science fiction this is probably not the series for you but if you are willing to ride along it just might be a fun ride.
I think the way he paints his characters is very similar. I know them, I like them and I want to keep reading about them but there are some aspects of them that I find hard to accept. Again all I can say is that when I get to the end I will probably be very sorry to see them leave me.
As I said, I am already reading book 10 of 18 and I am going to keep on reading to the end. I think my time is well spent and I think you may feel the same way if you do the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accountant as Hero

Wow. This is a good book. The fact that the hero, Dean, is an accountant (at one terrifying juncture he says “it was feeling like tax season”) makes for a homey winsomeness in the narration—kind of the way a careful, literal-minded, basically honest man in that profession would confront the end of the world. I loved it. The plot is complex—the kind of curve balls life throws at people on a galactic scale. Recommended.

I enjoy science fiction. I like slipping off into future situations. Riding off on space ships and exploring distant destinations. Well it is all here and Mr. Hystad makes it all come alive. Pick this book, you won't be disappointed.

When I saw this book I was hesitant about reading it, I thought it might be not well written with a boring plot, I was wrong and look forward to reading the next.

Great read! Once I started reading it I had a difficult time putting it down, not a good thing when it is your anniversary weekend. Anyway, had everything I look for in a book, fast paced, did not go overboard in building characters (Seems to me that a lot of books "build characters" just to add fluff and page count). Nothing bad to say, only a couple of calling him a her and vice verse and I don't remember any contradictions in the story line. To the person that stated they "assumed Mary was a pilot" no, the story line pretty much spelled it out.
