Needed an Editor

I like Jenny Hale & have read most of her Christmas books. I have also just finished “The Summer House”, “Summer by the Sea”, & “The Summer Hideaway” all of which take place on the Outer Banks of North Carolina which is a place my extended family spends 1 week every year. “The Summer Hideaway” had for me some glaring problems that a good editor should have caught & corrected before publication. First problem: The lead female character had a 5 year-old son who was written as an older child. He was allowed to do things without an adult close by that would be extremely dangerous for a young child especially in a place known for its riptides. Second problem: The female & male characters supposedly met when they were around 15 years old & according to the book the mother gave birth to her son when she was 19 making her 24 when the book begins. If they were around the same age as the book stated, the male character should have been around 24. Yet, he was a pediatric neurosurgeon which requires extensive medical training & he would have to be in his mid to late 30s to have completed his training & been a practicing surgeon long enough to build an excellent reputation in his speciality. Third problem: The doctor gives up a medical practice he loves to own & operate a restaurant! This might have been a tidy way to wrap up a book, but it was just not believable. These problems took away my enjoyment of the book. An author owes it to her readers to get important facts straight!
