WOW! Mercy goes out with a bang. This is a fast paced nerve wracking action adventure that shows us just how very far Mercy has grown and thank goodness she has something to live for, to keep going for because she will be tested. This is an exciting finale to a fantastic series and I for one will miss Mercy and Truman.

Good ending to series

This last book was not how I was anticipating Mercy’s journey coming to an end but it wrapped up the series nicely and had a satisfying conclusion. As always, this final installment of Elliot’s Mercy Kilpatrick Series was gripping and a page-turner from start to finish. When I first picked up my Kindle and opened this story, I had planned on just reading a few chapters then picking it up the next evening to finish but I ended up staying up half the night and read it in its entirety. I was just unable to put it down to go to bed. I kept saying ‘just one more chapter’ or ‘oh, I need to see real quick what happens next here’ and it just kept going and going until I was on the last page around 2:30 am. The last few chapters of the book were really intense with a harrowing experience for Mercy, as well as an emotionally heightened one for Truman so I just could not stop; I had to know the outcome. With the story being told from both Mercy and Truman’s POV’s it provided a stronger connection to the characters and their emotional states and interactions and I enjoyed the way Elliot connected both their investigations towards the end. It was also nice to see all the loose ends carried throughout the series tied up. The book was well-written, well-paced, intense and suspenseful with an interesting storyline and engaging characters. I would definitely recommend the Mercy Kilpatrick Series to any suspense, mystery, crime/thriller reader.

A Satisfying Finale

I thoroughly enjoyed this last book in the Mercy Kilpatrick series. It was well written and well thought out.

The only part that was disappointing for me was the end results of the situation with Pete Hodges and the ATF, et. al. It was too pat, felt too neat, and didn't fit in with how Ms. Elliott drew Pete. It almost felt as if it just need to be over so Ms. Elliott could focus on what was happening next with Mercy.

Another conclusion, based on Pete's previous behavior, would have felt moreb realistic and provided a more satisfying read.

Still, it was good to see Truman and Mercy together, finally.

Yes, it's only a story and fiction but it gives the feeling and anxiety of how it must be reacting to be under cover in a hostile, deadly environment. Very nice wrap up that does not disappoint the reader. After hanging in there through all the Mercy novels we, like Mercy deserve a happy ending.. Thank you Kendra Elliot

The final Mercy book and it’s a good one

I’ve enjoyed this series. Mercy Kilpatrick is definitely a bit of a different personality with her prepper ways and work for the FBI. In this last book, the stakes are the highest yet for Mercy and only a few months before she’s set to finally wed Truman, this case may be her undoing.

The pace and suspense were great in this book. I would call it more thriller or suspense than mystery unlike some of her previous books. However, this one really did make you wonder if Mercy would get out of this intact.

One thing kind of bugged me though. Why would they let Mercy go undercover and especially with such a volatile case when she’d been covered prominently in the news in the recent past? Seems to me this would make her extremely vulnerable especially given the paranoid personalities she could encounter on this case. That’s really my only complaint with the story.

Nonetheless, good read and a good ending to a well done series. Four stars.

Another reason to love Kendra Elliot!

Every single book that Kendra Elliot has written has been phenomenal. They've all been books one can't put down until they're finished and every character comes to life to the point you can almost see them standing in front of you. But this one, hands down, has to be one of her best ever. I truly hope that we get to meet up with Mercy and Truman in the future because these two characters really resonate with the reader.
This story had so many twists and turns that it seemed like a one-two punch every chapter. It's amazing how invested I became with every character in the story, especially Eden, and I almost feel bereft because the book is done.
If you're looking for books with believable characters, engrossing situations, heart-stopping suspense, then any book by Kendra Elliot is going to fill that requirement. But if you read anything at all by this author, you definitely need to read the Mercy Kilpatrick books!

I have learned so much through Mercy’s story... strong female lead bringing in criminals and solving crime. I have learned more about the Northwestern part of our country. I understand better the need the preppers have to prepare for survival. I also see love, reconciliation and family can happen through Truman and those that love both Mercy and Truman. The plot of this novel reiterates these values when a “cult-like” group keep their members in emotional chains through the manipulation of their leader. Mercy goes undercover to find out about stolen guns and finds her value of life can not be hidden in this role as she tries to help the vulnerable in this group.

A nice finish to the series

This is the final book in the Mercy Kilpatrick series. If you haven't read any of the previous books, you might be able to get away with reading this one as a standalone but I wouldn't recommend it. While I found Book 6 a good read and I'm sad that the series is coming to an end, some of the themes were repetitive. Working as an undercover agent at the last minute for the ATF, Mercy poses as another agent's girlfriend and goes incommunicado in an anti-government group set on protecting their second amendment right. With at least 2 ATF agents killed previously and a small fortune worth of guns being stolen, additional rumours of a potential domestic terrorism act by the off-radar group has everyone scrambling. While Mercy didn't want to go undercover after the trauma of her previous case, the fact that there might be vulnerable children at the camp has her agreeing.

Even though this group focusses on the underground militia/anti-government sentiment again, I still liked this angle in the book. As per the other novels, Truman has his own case to work on. In this instance, he's working with Evan Bolton again after several bodies turn up after being dumped on rural properties. There was plenty of suspense and danger in this book and I thought it was well-paced. I still enjoyed both of the main characters and their relationship but once again, Mercy's whereabouts are unknown and Truman is a nervous wreck.

Other exhausted plot themes were Ollie finding another body related to a case (Seriously. He found another one just driving to school), nothing really being found out by Mercy, the police and the FBI - they once again finalised the case due to luck and/or a turn of events rather than actual investigative work. Mercy was sent to investigate if American's Preserve, the underground group, had a hidden cache of weapons and what their big plans were for a potential attack - well, she found out next to nothing, couldn't report back on the small amount she did find out and ended up in big danger. This is a shame because there was so much potential here that could have been flushed out with just a bit more detail and emphasis on the actual case.

As with the previous books, some of the actions by Mercy probably weren't the choices I would peg an experienced FBI agent as having. At one point, she has an opportunity to grab a gun but thinks it's smarter to run to an unprotected area weaponless. Same goes for the FBI office in the book. Having to call in a private investigator to search for a missing person with all of the resources they have? When that person is one of their own? Nope. As Mercy goes undercover from the beginning of the book, most of the story has her and Truman apart as well, it's worth mentioning, which means that the secondary characters that readers have come to know such as Kaylie and the townsfolk are also absent.

Some of the series' familiar plot devices were wrapped up too quickly and conveniently. As with the case Mercy is on, extra detail and time spent on them would have added positively to the story. After five previous books where Mercy is at odds with her father, it's brought to a conclusion almost as an afterthought. This was disappointing. Books worth of build up for the reader to not even get a conversation between Mercy and her father that led towards the reconciliation. And then it was just all hunky dory. This was a big oversight to me. That being said, Truman and Mercy's dad had a talk and Truman was fabulous.

There was also the militia group, American's Preserve, who were careful in staying off the radar but dump three dead bodies that can be easily found and then possibly traced back to them. I get why they did it - it just seemed out of character and the reason didn't quite hold up for me, especially considering they dumped them in a matter of weeks. The story led to what could have been a big showdown between the government groups and the militia but it was over before it even began which was a shame and I think another missed opportunity as it was pretty anticlimactic. And without spoiling the details, her and Truman miss most of the end of the case and are quickly filled in by Eddie even though the entire book had been on this investigation.

I loved the family dynamic with Truman, Mercy, Kaylie and Ollie. This was tied up nicely as our happy couple finally tie the knot surrounded by the people they love. I would have liked a bit more of this as the book skipped three months ahead and then finished up so felt somewhat rushed. The ending was really sweet though and tied up nicely. Overall, it was still a good read but extra detail being included to flush out the story a bit would have made it great.

A great conclusion to the series

A Merciful Promise was an excellent conclusion to the Mercy Kilpatrick series with an exciting plot and wonderful progression for the characters.

FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick has a different background than most FBI agents which makes her the perfect candidate to infiltrate a militia. Having been raised by survivalists, Mercy understands the mind-set of those in the compound and knows how to blend in. Just as Mercy cuts off all contact with the outside world, her fiancé Truman Daly, Eagle’s Nest chief of police, is dealing with a bizarre set of murders where the victims are shot execution style before being dumped in random locations around town. With time running out for Mercy to stop a terrorist attack before it’s too late, it will take all of her wits to find the culprit before she’s discovered.

Of the two plotlines in this book, I found the militia plot with Mercy to be the more interesting of the two, however I did enjoy them both. Mercy is given very little time to acclimate to the idea of going undercover as she is only given a day’s notice before she’s sent in. I found the fast-paced aspect of the story works in the book’s favor though as it kept things interesting and kept the suspense up. Truman’s plot with the murders is a bit slower and the book doesn’t spend as much time on it. However as the book went on I liked how the author slowly started to tie the two plots together before eventually merging them in an action-packed finale. I thought the ending was very well done and I really enjoyed the way everything played out.

For a large portion of this book Mercy is isolated on the compound which means we see a lot less of the side characters we’ve come to know throughout the series. I was happy whenever we shifted to Truman’s point of view as that usually meant we’d get to see more of the characters, Ollie and Kaylie particularly who are favorites of mine. It was interesting seeing Mercy so isolated as she’s come to rely more and more on those closest to her. As a result of her isolation and the fact she’s supposed to be blending in, a lot of Mercy’s personality is muted in this book which I thought was a shame as I’ve gotten used to her directness and take charge attitude.

A Merciful Promise as well as the rest of the series are fantastic reads and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for romantic suspense with more of a focus on the suspense.

Loved all the Mercy books except this one (spoilers in second paragraph)

Based on the title, I hoped this would be about Mercy's relationships, especially with Truman. There was little about the relationships, and a lot about a militia camp. Frankly, Ms. Elliot seems to have lost interest in Mercy and her gang, and likely wrote this to fulfill a contract.

Almost immediately, Mercy gets sent to a militia camp for a job, where of course the women are servants for use by the men. Virtually everyone at the camp is unpleasant, and there is little to enjoy or even find interesting about the descriptions of it. Ultimately Mercy gets injured, kidnapped, and taken to a cold, dark place, where she is joined by a teenager with little family support (sound familiar?). Of course Truman finds and rescues her. The last chapter does give a short description of their wedding, where *poof* her father has instantly forgiven her enough to walk her down the aisle. And they all lived happily ever after.
