It was pretty okay/ good.
Normally I find the various authors' Nocturne Falls offerings to be much more gripping.
While this was an interesting spin on a mermaid tail (see what I did there? 😘), which, as a mermaid myself, I always appreciate 🙋🏼, somehow there were too many disconnects to truly dive into the main character, care about her & fall in love with the hero. Too many jumps in emotion/plot happened:
"I hate this guy who's Messing with my perfect, magical lakeI, grr, now he's taking over my salon!" 5 seconds after doing his hair 'off screen', "hmm, yes! I will date you!. Never mind that the town's ruling family would never put her & her lake home in such a position of danger, in a position to blow the whole town's big secret."
Or, "I love so much I'll give up my entire identity & even my species to be with you", 5 seconds after doing so, "never mind, I'm leaving you now."
It mostly just needed a bit of content continuity editing to become brilliant.
The writing (prose, etc) is there, it's just the details inherent in story crafting-- especially in someone else's WELL-defined universe-- that need some love.
There's sex, so a point was taken for that, the random jumps are another point off, and the general lack of grippingness & frequent desire to put it down is another point off. But otherwise, there's mermaids, so extra point given.
