5.0 out of 5 starsIncredibly well written account of an important story

How do you review a book like this? Where do you even begin? I originally received a free copy of this book from NetGalley, but knew within just a few pages of this beautifully written non-fiction account of the USS Indianapolis's history that I HAD to own a finished copy. I was unable to finish my ARC before the publication date, but the week it was published, I bought my hard copy. Let me say that the physical book itself is just as gorgeous as the prose within.

Lynn Vincent and Sara Vladic have put together a well-written, unputdownable account of the USS Indianapolis, her last voyage, the sinking of ship, the incredible, harrowing experiences of the survivors and the unthinkable moments of those who lost their lives, as well as the court-martial of Indy's captain, and his eventual exoneration. This is a book that will make you sob hysterically, copious amounts of tears that will come so hard and fast you won't be able to see the page in front of you. It will make you gasp in horror, shake with rage and indignation, and give you immense joy and comfort.

Embarrassingly, I knew NOTHING of the USS Indianapolis before I picked up this book on NetGalley. I am heartily ashamed of the gap in my education. I am beyond grateful to NetGalley and to the authors and publisher of this book for providing such a complete, compelling account. Whether you know a lot about US Naval History or you know nothing, please, I beg you...get your hands on a copy of this book. The saga of the USS Indianapolis and her crew is one that deserves to be told, honored, and remembered.

3.0 out of 5 starsMore than you want to know

Whew. I finished it. Perhaps no way near as great a feat as those who survived days in the ocean after the sinking of their ship, but nonetheless it did feel like somewhat of an ordeal. This is a loooong book. The authors seemed determined to include every scrap of information they could find regarding this naval tragedy and its aftermath. Perhaps that was necessary as they were retracing ground already covered by others. Since I was not familiar with those other writings, I don’t know how much actually new material this book contains, but it seemed like not much. Their goal seemed merely to stitch it all together in one place.
Their tendency to include information that was either trivial or entirely invented made the book seem even longer than it needed to be. As but one example of many, we are told that Furman, as he set off on a flight from Washington D.C. “peered out the window beside his seat and watched the city beneath him vanish.” How did they know he did that? What did he see that made this noteworthy? Do we really care?
The cast of characters that are profiled is extensively long. Though at least some biographical details are given about most, as the book tends to skip around in covering everything that was going on, I had difficulty remembering who was who. A List of Personae would have been helpful. Likewise, a diagram of the Indianapolis would have been useful in understanding all that was taking place once the ship was torpedoed.
The book touches on but does not seem to come to any coherent conclusion about who is ultimately responsible for tragedies that occur in war. While Captain McVay is ultimately exonerated, those higher up the chain of command, who seemed to bear a greater responsibility for the tragedy, get off scot-free. And why are ship commanders more likely to be court marshaled than generals who might be equally guilty for loss of life which occurs under their command?

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an Incredible book!

1,195 men left Tinian Island on July 26, 1945, after unloading components for atomic warfare against Japan. Four days later while enroute to the Philippines, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese submarine I-58. Approximately 300 men died on the ship and nearly 900 entered the water. Only 316 survived, after nearly five days before being rescued after fighting the elements, sharks and other trials. This was the worst sea disaster of the United States Navy. Sixteen days after the ship was sunk, Japan surrendered.

This reader was fortunate to read the recently released “Indianapolis” by authors Lynn Vincent and Sara Vladic in the quiet outdoors of the Arizona White Mountains. The atmosphere allowed for frequent reflections on what was written, as well as visualizing scenes. Should one think that this is simply another book about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, it is not. This is thee book on the USS Indianapolis. Most certainly is it the non-fiction book of the year, or perhaps of the past decade and ranks in the top of written histories of the war in the Pacific.

This reader is in awe of the men of the USS Indianapolis. Many were teenagers or in their early 20s and came together as a team when in battle and with incredible courage when in the waters of the Philippine Sea.

Interest in the story of the USS Indianapolis for this reader began when he was in his early teens, following stories from his late father about July 26, 1945, when, as a member of the 509th Composite Group, was ordered to go to Tinian Town bay and photographically record the arrival of the heavy cruiser, any materials being transferred from the ship and photographs of the general activity. Having met some of the sailors or marines, he returned in the evening to see them off. The later news that it had been sunk, haunted him for years.

A few years ago, this reader found himself sitting on the shore on Tinian Island at the spot where the USS Indianapolis had berthed. While it had been years since the Indianapolis had set sail, the experience was powerful as one could still feel its presence.

The research and writing of Indianapolis are incredible. If only this book could be mandatory reading in our high schools. If you only read one book this year, this is the one.

Very riveting story that needed to be told in my estimation. Seems to be very well researched. Like the way the authors covered not only the Indianapolis and its sinking, but the court martial and all the events leading up to McVays exoneration. I have never read a book that tugged more at my emotions or was more difficult to put down.

Reading Vladic and Vincent account is like being in the front row of the historic events that befell the USS Indianapolis. It is a well researched and vivid account of the day by events of the ship as it ferries the plutonium to Tinian to the terrible tragedy of its torpedoing and aftermath. A very full read with surprises that take you to the newest details learned in 2017.

This is a compelling, detailed, and emotional story of the USS Indianapolis wartime activity just prior to her sinking after delivering components of the Hiroshima atomic bomb to the island of Tinian. It covers, in rare detail, the actions of enlisted and officer corp crew members before and after the sinking. It also details the wartime activity of the Japanese submarine, I-58, that sunk Indy. The author covers the post sinking actions of the Navy in great detail, including the court martial of her skipper Captain McVay, and ultimately his exoneration many, many years later.

If you enjoy WWII history, this is a fascinating and extremely well written story.

Probably one of the best books I have ever read. This story, unknown to many, is one that should be told over and over to many generations. There are many lessons to be learned through this book. The tales of the survivors and those who lost loved ones, lives that changed forever were real and authentic. The completeness in which Sara and Lynn take the story through to the end is incredible. I could not put the book down. I am thankful to all our heroes who served in "The Greatest Generation" and this book shows that not only did they serve our country during a time of crisis, they continued to honor the memories of those not as fortunate and made sure their stories were told.

What a shame that the Navy decided to throw a good Captain out and deem him responsible for the sinking of the Indianapolis instead of blaming the Japanese who actually sank the ship. The Navy knew it had left hundreds of Sailors to die in shark infested waters but did nothing for five days. Many died of exposure, oil covering their bodies, shark attacks and general exposure to the terrible events of the ship wreck. It took over 50 years to right a court marshal and to restore Captain McVays name. Sadly he lived with that shame for over 20 years before taking his own life. His men who survived the sinking knew this was wrong and many of their children, grandchildren and others kept fighting all those long long year until this terrible wrong was reversed. God bless Captain McVay, his honor and his men who survived the war. God bless all of our men and women who give all for us.

I purchased this book as my husband's uncle was on of the survivors. I also enjoy historical books. You cannot read this one without becoming emotionally involved. Most importantly it has information of recent Nov 2017 & March 2018 in regard to continuing events concerning the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. None of the movies seen in this regard prepared me for the reading of the events as they happened.

The Godfather
5.0 out of 5 stars The best book ever on the topic

I will let the more eloquent of the reviewers expound upon the virtues of this outstanding book and just give my pedestrian evaluation. I have been reading about the Indianapolis for some time, collecting every book on the subject. Many are quite good but incomplete. Things like time spent in the water, the actions of some of the sailors, the whitewash/coverup that led to Capt. McVay's sham of a court-martial, these things are often just glossed over with little detain. The authors have researched exhaustively the tragedy of the Indianapolis from When it was first considered for its original mission to the sad consequences decades after the fact. The accounts of the time spent in the water are graphic and enlightening. These were not men floating in the water for days, heroically helping one another, sacrificing for others, patiently awaiting rescue. Yes, there was heroism, sacrifice, and leadership, but there was also selfishness, madness, hostility, and surrender. Both ends of the spectrum were represented. This is not an indictment against anyone. Fear and madness account for most of the problems. If we judge some of their questionable behavior, let us imagine ourselves floating in the ocean, no food, no water, no security, surrounded by sharks that were feasting on shipmates, and imagine what we would do in those circumstances. I'd be terrified and of little use to myself or those around me. The handling of the court-martial and the details of the testimonies and the proceedings are revelatory. The injustice of singling out the captain while those truly responsible for the tragedy walk away freely makes one's blood boil. It is the blackest mark against the U S Navy that ever was.
In short, there was not one thing about this book I didn't find mesmerizing and I cannot recommend this enough to any serious student of this disaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cornucopia Of Tragedies

It’s doubtful many could say the authors were not thorough in their research. The collaboration between Ms. Vincent and Ms. Vladic has produced a thoughtful but blunt account of the sinking of the Indianapolis as well as the repercussions that followed. It gives a good representation of the American and Japanese mindsets as World War II edged towards its conclusion. ‘Indianapolis’ also explains the efforts in transporting the atom bomb components for Little Boy as well as the reasonable decision to drop them in an effort to end the war. It takes about 150 pages before the sinking of the Navy cruiser. Helpful diagrams of the Indianapolis and the Pacific region are included. There are sixteen pages of mostly black-and-white photographs.

‘Indianapolis’ was published in 2018. I found the material prior to the Indianapolis sinking to be somewhat dry but necessary. Once the ship was hit by two torpedoes, I was completely engrossed. I know as much about military ships and nautical jargon as I do about any of The Real Housewives television shows, so I relied heavily on the ship diagrams, maps, and Google. The nonfiction work is much more than the sinking of the ship and their rescue. Being stuck in the ocean with aggressive Oceanic Whitetip sharks who were killing seamen with savage regularity was only part of the ordeal. It is also an account of the trial and cover-up done by military brass to save their… ehh, backsides. Man, it never fails. People in power will use lower-level individuals as scapegoats in an effort to cover up their mistakes, even the high-end officers in the military are not immune from unscrupulous behavior. Ms. Vincent and Ms. Vladic describe in detail the injustice inflicted upon the Indianapolis captain after the sailors are rescued as well as the decades-long efforts to exonerate him. Some of the actions taken by the Navy’s muckety-mucks should make your blood boil.

‘Indianapolis’ is full of drama, tragedy, heroism and cowardice. The last short chapter gave me goosebumps. Living such events is not something anyone can just shuck off and move on with their lives. It leaves lasting scars. Thankfully, ‘Indianapolis’ ends on a healing note. There's a lot you can learn about the human condition by reading this book.
