CANDY is a hard book to classify. Is it horror? It could be. Is it a thriller? Most definitely. Is it a road story? Why yes it is. Is it a buddy cop story? Well, maybe but without the cops and slightly less buddies. The one thing that truly can be said about CANDY by Justin Woodward is that it is one hell of a ride.
CANDY was originally presented in serial form on the Justin Woodward fan page. I did not get a chance to read it in it serial form, and for that I am so happy. I think having to wait week after week to see what would happen to our anti-heroine would have given me a aneurysm. Once I started reading I could not put it down.
The story is told to us by Candy Tran, an 18 year old fresh off graduation and suddenly thrust into a world wind of circumstance she has no control over. She is accompanied by her boyfriend Nick as they travel cross country on a ever changing and somewhat disturbing odyssey of violence.
Justin's tale is unique and keeps the reader in the dark just as much as the characters in the story. Just when you think you have something figured out...bam...he changes it and your left slack jawed, having to start your thought process all over again. Also extra kudos to the author for narrating the book completely from the view of the main character Candy. He manages to sound more like a teenage girl than my own teenage daughter.
So its a horror, thriller, road movie, even a love story of sorts.
Just think of Quentin Tarantino directing a movie of On The Road with a splash of Natural Born Killers and The X-Files, and you might come close to the story of CANDY.
I really enjoyed this book and have already passed it on to another person to read. (and only because I own a 2nd signed copy). Definitely worth your time to pick up and read.
The first thing most people want to know before reading a book is, “What genre does it fall into?” Well, don’t ask that question about CANDY - it refuses to be placed into any such box. It’s scary, thrilling, and funny - and will keep you guessing throughout the experience.
Justin tells the story of Candy Tran who gets herself wrapped up in an unbelievable cross-country, vigilante-like, killing spree - meeting some of the most unusual characters along the way. What she doesn’t realize is that everything, from the very beginning has been carefully orchestrated, sometimes with disastrous results.
This story has twists, turns, humor, and will keep you guessing - even after you read the last line. I can see Candy Tran making a few more appearances in a series of books by Justin.
Holy moly what a ride!! From the very beginning I was totally hooked! This fast-paced humorous thriller was incredibly entertaining. The twists and turns are nonstop. Justin Woodward is a master with prose. He grabs you in from the first page and doesn't let you go until it's over. I also would like to point out how incredibly well Justin is at writing female characters. I feel like a lot of male authors that write female characters do so in a way that makes those characters less believable. Justin did a fantastic job bringing Candy to life in a realistic way. Highly recommend!!!
This book is amazing. Definitely not what I was expecting. Author Justin M. Woodward has a excellent mind and great amount of talent which shows in his work. This book got my attention from the start. It was so good I didn't even stop reading to eat. I was at the edge of my seat the whole time and my heart was racing faster with each chapter I read. I started hating Candy but at the end I loved her. You should definitely read her story.
What can I say about this book that couldn't be said if you were driving down the highway, going 120mph and you take you hands off the wheel and put on a blindfold. From beginning to end this story is balls to the wall. There are twists and turns in the twists and turns. A truly compelling read that will have you salivating for more! I will be looking forward to Justin M. Woodward's releases in the future.
I had been hearing a good buzz about Justin M. Woodward so I decided to give Candy try. I am so glad I did as I ate it up like, well, candy (I can't possibly be the first to say that, right?). I absolutely enjoyed this book start to finish and cannot wait to read more from the author! If you're a fan of Chuck Palahniuk's style of writing and humor, you will definitely want to read Candy.
A mad-dash fever-dream of a story that's only as successful as your opinion of the deeply-flawed, irreverent perspective of its heroine. Characters are more thumb-sketched ideas than fully-realized creations, but oddly this works in Candy's favor. It's definitely ambitious, yet in my opinion, does not fully deliver on its potential. I'd like to spend more time with Candy Tran and if you're left wanting more, then that's a good sign.
A twisted tale packed with plenty of morbid humor and a main character many horror girls will relate to. Woodward's writing is top notch and the story draws you in from the opening sentence to the very last.
This was a page turner from the beginning. I definitely didn't see where it was going. I believe Justin is on to something and I can't wait to see where he goes from here. Tamer animals to be read soon.
