5.0 out of 5 starsHOPE WASN'T THE ONLY THING LEFT IN THE BOX!!!
Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2020
Ben Walker was still recovering from the events from northern Turkey on Mount Ararat. The evil that they found had destroyed so many lives and families and Ben was still struggling with a form of PTSD as well as physical issues related to that and other "assignments" he had been involved in. So, it wasn't without worry … and a lot of anger as he had promised his son that he was coming home … that he was being sent into just such another situation in northern Iraq. After all, they didn't send him in for the simple walk in the park type of mission. But, a side benefit was that he would be working with Kim Seong. She had been with him on Ararat and she had shared the horror.

Unfortunately, that common experience and support did not prepare him to face the what was buried in an ancient buried city beneath the hills of Iraq. And, it was his job to make sure that, whatever they faced, it would be brought back to the American Government and not allowed into any one else's hands to be used as a possible weapon.

But, he wasn't prepared for what they found buried in the depths for centuries.

Christopher Golden is one of the modern day masters of all things horror. His stories typically are the slow build towards the unveiling of the true evil in the story, pulling the reader along in his wake as he weaves strand after strand into his web of fear and fright. As a reader, these are the type of stories that keep you on the edge and wanting to read just that one page more...just that one chapter more... as Golden reveals the next piece of the puzzle, a puzzle that you can feel is just out of reach and you keep seeing out of the corner of your eye but can't quite visualize until the trap is sprung and your caught. His "heroes" are created to be strong and represent "good" but eventually reveal their weaknesses and failings while his "villains" appear to be despicable but are never truly evil. It's only the horror that they face that is truly evil!

NEW READERS - This is the second of a series and the question is always... "Do I need to have read the first book?" Absolutely not. Golden crafts his stories in such a way that you can enjoy the adventure in and of itself. But, I would recommend that you then go back and read the first book... if only for the fun and thrill of it...and book 3 coming on 2020.

Note for Christopher - What the heck happened in Guatamala?

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Scary Tale From Christopher Golden
Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2019

Christopher Golden has a knack for writing terror-filled stories with an archaeological setting, as evidenced in his previous book, "Ararat". He continues in the same vein with his new book, "The Pandora Room".

Sophie Durand and her team are on an archaeological dig in northern Iraq when they come across a hidden room. Contained in this room is a jar. Legend has it that there were two jars in the Pandora's Box story; one for Pandora and one for her sister, Anesidora. One contained all the blessings of the gods, while the other contained all of the curses. Which one is it?

As the days pass, it becomes clear which jar it is, for the members of Sophie's team begin to show signs of sickness as well as seeing scary apparitions.

Expert Ben Walker (from "Ararat") is called in to lend his knowledge and assistance. But things soon come close to anarchy, as a militant band of jihadists storm the complex and try to take possession of the jar. Now, Ben, Sophie, and the others must keep the jar from falling into the hands of the jihadists while at the same time maintaining control of themselves as the mystery contained within the jar slowly seeps into each one of them. Will they make it out alive?

I've read several of Golden's previous books, Including "Ararat", and I've come to enjoy his style of terror very much. His characters are well-developed, and his stories always have a fast pace and a twist. Both are in evidence here. The ending is very good, too. If you enjoy reading good, scary tales, then give Christopher Golden a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Pandora Room Delivers on all Fronts
Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2019

Christopher Golden follows up the wonderful Ararat with the even more textured and entertaining The Pandora Room. What if what we knew from myths and legends was wrong?? Golden opens up his own mysterious box and lets out the evil, the action, the horror, the humor and the characters that have made him a fabulous writer over the past 20 years. Golden's character Ben Walker is your everyman who gets put into bizarre situations and has to figure out how to survive them by being light on his feet and improvising. Sophie Durand is a determined scientist who has been placed in a thorny situation in a problematic place and environment. Do you blow everyone's beliefs or do you keep it secret and how do you try and do both? Great action and character development as well as some truly horrific scenes makes this a fantastic sequel to Ararat, but The Pandora Room also stands on it's own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great FollowUp to Ararat

I love this style of archaeological adventure with a supernatural twist...reminiscent of Indiana Jones with a more horrific edge.

Great, diverse cast of characters, ties in with Ararat in satisfying ways with a few overlapping characters. An all around fun read-I read it in one sitting!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Supernatural Thriller!

I'm always a little wary when it comes to sequels of a book that I enjoyed. Will the author catch the same magic that they achieved in the first story or will they somehow fall flat?
I'm happy to say that Christopher Golden didn't disappoint. The Pandora Room picked up where Ararat left off and kicked it up a couple of notches. Golden's characters continue to live, breathe and grow on the page. It's refreshing that Christopher Golden's character Ben Walker isn't the perfect hero, giving him a sense of depth.
Any fans of Supernatural Thrillers will enjoy this book.

This is the second book i read by Golden and it it starts where the first left after the Ararat incident. This time Walker is called to a digging site where they might have found Pandoras box and it dosent take long before crazy thing starts to happen. A well written thriller with horror and sci-fi elements

Story gets bogged down in minutia and character development— most of which is tedious and seemingly unrelated to the story. I enjoyed the first book. It am not sure if I will continue after this installment.

I enjoyed Ararat, however this one not very much.
It's basically the same as Ararat, just a different location and new characters.
It was kinda boring .
