How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsCan never have enough Little!

As always, I'm a huge Bentley Little fan, and these weird tales gave me what I was looking for. Some of them refer to his other work: Fans will recall "Milk Ranch Point" from The Revelation, one seems to be a side-story about The Store, and the detective guy from "Bumblebee" from The Collection shows up as well. Pretty much all of them are classic Bentley Little--weird stuff happens for no apparent rhyme or reason, unfortunate folks whose cars break down (that happens a lot in Little-verse) get sexually assaulted and/or torn apart, and so on. I should note, though, that some of these stories are pretty disturbing, even for a Little veteran with a strong stomach like me. A couple have pedophiliac villains (though nothing explicit, thankfully), and the imagery in the story about the art gallery is *extreme.* But for some folks, that would be a bonus, haha, so I'll give this 5 stars :D

1.0 out of 5 starsVery, very disappointing
Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2019
Many years ago I tried a novel by Bentley Little but didn't finish it. Now I thought I'd try a short story collection and I'm just bored out of my skull reading this. All stories are rather short, so that is not the problem. But most stories don't seem to go anywhere. It is as if the author had an idea, started to write the story and then realizes that he didn't know how to end it. As a result most stories fall flat and left me with a big "hmm, that's it??". I guess, this author is just not for me. Horror stories are supposed to give you little shivers, but the only scary thing about these stories is that I paid good money for them.

This is painful to write as I own every book of his I can find and he is one of my favorite novelists of all time. Hell I have bought over 10 copies of his book The Collection to gift to people by sharing his amazing collection of short stories.

Unfortunately this is not that book...while it can certainly be said to be competent writing for the most part and some of the stories are actually well done this collection overall has the feel of early stories from an author when they were figuring out their own style and hammering down on the basics. I don't regret the purchase though, but if you are just starting to read I'd suggest one of his regular novels or his short stories book The Collection first.

I read The Collection and Walking Alone back to back, and I have to say that I was not disappointed. The stories are well written and diverse. I have been a fan of this author for nearly twenty years and rarely been disappointed.
One thing, though.... Quite a few of his stories have "dwarves" in them and they are ALWAYS portrayed as evil. I do believe that the author is frightened of "little people" which I find ironic, since his name is Bentley LITTLE!!!

I adore Bentley Little stories so I guess I was let down by these short stories. It was definitely not my favourite anthology and I felt that the majority of the stories felt unfinished. Bentley has an amazingly unique voice and his ideas were gold but somehow they just didn’t translate.

Of the gems, read :
Slam Book
Children’s Hospital
Last Rodeo on the Circuit (my favourite by far)
The Mall

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm. Not his best.

I’ve always enjoyed Little’s books so I was excited about this one. But I was disappointed. Most of the short stories seemed to be nothing but words to pump up the word count. I like stories that are NOT predictable, that have endings that make me say, “Wow, didn’t see that coming.” This is the first time I’ve felt as if I’ve wasted my time with a BL book. I choose to believe it’s a “one-off” because he’s just too talented to stop reading. Therefore, I look forward to his next one.

Lets see. How does one describe BENTLEY LITTLE'S newest volume of short stories titled WALKING ALONE? Weird, creepy, and downright good reading! I have been hooked on Mr.Little's book for quite awhile & he never fails to creep me out. This book is a collection of short stories from the past . Published in various media ,they are short and sweet and definitely not recommend to read late at !
night.( Now that I'm done with the book, hopefully, the nightmares will ease up a little! ) Definitely a keeper and re read !

I usually can't wait for a Bentley Little book to come out and that's why I immediately bought Walking Alone. I started reading the short stories but quite honestly, I felt something was missing. With some of the stories, I had the feeling that the story line didn't give an ending to the tale. I'm a little disappointed with this one. Sorry, Bentley.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rampant Casual Sexism
Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2021

Hugely disappointed to have found that the stories feature a continuous theme of offhand, obliviously-delivered (apparently) sexism. The protagonists are typically men, the wives are overwhelmingly fifties-era secondary characters, shrill and negligible.
Ex. Husband heads to Hardware section of store, wife to Beauty; husband reads political tome, wife reads "lifestyle" magazines; a teen target must be "slutty" looking, and on and on.
It was all just too distracting and offputting, cannot recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FUN DISTRACTION

I love anything Bentley Little writes. Of course I'd rather read a novel above short stories but these were great because they were written by him. So if you want a good distraction from everything you can take your time and get in some horror snacks.
