5.0 out of 5 starsI enjoy the Yellowstone TV series on the paramount network
Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2018
I enjoy the Yellowstone TV series on the paramount network. Hopefully, the series will be renewed past season 1. I think the characters and the story lines are great and the scenery on the show is some of the best I have ever viewed. Kevin Costner is great as the lead and the other characters are also well played. If this series is not renewed by the network I will be severely disappointed. I am really tired of all the "reality based" shows on TV and the return of previously TV show storylines like Murphy Brown, Will and Grace, Roseanne, etc. Yellowstone is a show based upon current subject matter, i.e. Uncontrolled urban growth and progress versus retaining natural environment and seeking a control of urban sprawl facing this country.

Friends kept telling me how great this show is so like a dummy I bought the whole 1st season. I watched it for three hours and hated it. I kept waiting for a plot line to show up but there wasn't one. Just scenery, nudity, sex, and lots of "f" words and filthy language. If that's what you like to watch on tv then this show is for you but I like to watch something that's at least halfway intelligent.

3.0 out of 5 stars Uneven, but not bad.

Good plot generally speaking, good acting, a modern western with glimpses into some of the daily life and challenges facing Montana ranchers. I found the writing stereotypic to the point of being shallow and stupid in some places, delightfully good in other places with surprising moments of clarity and depth. Character backstories are provided but not in a way that seem natural to the pacing of the episodes. It also seems like the writers thought they just had to include an obligatory level of violence at the obligatory rapid pace. That level and pace of violence is oddly out of sync with the nature of this particular story.

The plot could have been wrapped up in one season and it should have been. The story would have been communicated perfectly well. Instead, in the last episode the main character's arc was awkwardly extended and a new "twist" was added as sort of a cliff hanger. One gets the impression that this was done just in case a second season can be wrung out of the producers.

I honestly don't understand why American television is so unwilling to provide a fully formed story with a start and finish. Yellowstone could have run a second season with a second story, a third season with a third story and so on, rather than insisting on a longer run with a single story line and reliance on the old trope of the cliffhanger. And oftentimes the second season never makes the cut anyway and the viewers are left swinging in the breeze.

3.0 out of 5 stars I've never had a show I initially love and rave about to family and friends "UNGROW" on me.

I've never had a show I initially love and rave about to family and friends "UNGROW" on me and become unwatchable.

I initially fell in love with this show for many, many reasons. But each time I watch it, I like it a little bit less.

I won't trash it, but I feel like the entire, ENTIRE, Tate/Tate's mom story just needs to be cut down, that kid shouldn't be a central part of the story, Beth and Ricky from American Beauty and Rip should have way more screen time; they're just infinitely more interesting. Tate is a very, very tedious thing to watch. I'm sorry, he just is. He's not the next Haily Joel Osmet, and I keep getting this strange sense that the creators of the show think he is, and we, the viewer, need to marvel in his greatness. Not making fun, he's just not destined for the Hollywood walk of fame, which is fine, he seems like a great kid otherwise.

Also, the entire Kayce story is just *eye roll*. It is the *eye roll* emoji personified. Luke Grimes does a great job he's believable as a Montanan and a rancher's son, great job BUT these situations the creators put him in are just fantastical! It's like they stuffed 400 years of atrocities against First Peoples, consolidated it all into 2 months of Kayce's life, AND made him the hard luck hero of the high plains, fighting pedos, creeps, greedy californian billionaires, crooked cops, his father, treasure hunters and one big dumb scary bear. At least the one guy acknowledges how ridiculous it is by saying "You're becoming the lone ranger of the reservation..."

I almost want to give the creators some credit because it "seems" like huge swathes of the story was cut out to both trim each episode down to 50 minutes and perhaps cut down the season 8-9 episodes. I wish they had more latitude but it just didn't work out that way, but they made some regrettable choices as well which more time might have actually killed the show comepletely. Very torn. Have to give it 3 stars with the caveat that I still can't wait for Season 2!

Cool premise, beautiful cinematography, and great performance by Kevin Costner. But I have to say, as a big Taylor Sheridan fan I expected a lot better writing.

This is the kind of show that you get when writers don't respect the intelligence of their audience. I expected the show to be more story focused and character driven - a true slow burning, atmospheric western.

It's not like that at all.

What you're getting is an edgier daytime soap opera with a bigger budget and better cast. People die from freak accidents every episode, and one particular character finds himself in the most ridiculous, implausible scenarios so frequently that it became humorous.

And the daughter...Good Lord. She is one of the worst characters I've seen in a show in years. I'm not sure if it's the actress or the way the character is written, but every second she's on screen is cringe inducing.

Hopefully the second season will take a different approach, because I think this show could have promise if they'd just take it seriously and have a little respect for the intelligence of their audience.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Sopranos on Horseback

There are few if any sympathetic characters. But what really annoys me most are the details.
Just a few:
*Some dog actors are said to be wolves (ok since there are NO wolf actors) but the dubbed in noises made by the alleged wolves are actually coyotes, a different species.
*Gramps teaches grandson how to build a fire in close proximity to dry knee high grass. A sure fire (sorry) prescription for natural disaster that would likely wipe out gramps cattle heard.
*Spooking cattle with a helicopter. Beves are sold by the pound. Every pound a steer runs runs off when panicked is money lost.
*Montana is an open range state. Ownership would never be the slightest issue just because the crossed an unfenced road on to adjacent property. Even if adjacent property is tribal.
*Gramps gets an MRI. Scene has major flaws - no hearing protection, patient shown lying on stomach rather than on back. Totally inauthentic.

There are others. Its hard to pay attention to a story line when so much of the story line is nonsense. Is there a law against writer malpractice? They don’t do even the most basic background research for the story.

Poor Costner. This may be the worst thing he has ever been associated with.

The writers of old time soap operas learned that trama built a great afternoon audience, people are addicted to such behavior. And this show will never disappoint in that venue. There is plenty of sex, conflict, nudity and violence. yippee! Oh... for the good: country, horses and beautiful scenery are the backdrop. Good, bad and ugly make this show a replica of many others in this day and age and perhaps a must see for at least the first season.

Yellowstone has been a great series to watch, warning as it has a lot of unnecessary/ gratuitous foul language & some nudity! Anyway, we experienced quite a lot of “Glitches” (tiling out) on the final episode of Season 1!?! Not the fault of Yellowstone, just poor quality on Amazons playback behalf.

I thought this was going to be a great series with all my friends boasting about it. After I purchased it, I was disappointed and wished I wouldn't have wasted my money. It maybe a good show for others but for me it's just too rough, lots of negative ugliness coming out of the characters. I prefer something more wholesome.

My wife likes this. I don't. It bears little resemblance to life on a Montana cattle ranch but it does make clear what an abundance of money can do for a guy who is sorta at wits end.
She will want to watch more of it and I will probably cough up the money to buy it for her. She likes it-I do not.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great acting but tons of violence and murder

Everyone raves about this show. And it is excellent acting, we like all the characters, and the scenery is amazing. But there is violence and murder in almost every episode and some of those murders are pretty gruesome.
It got depressing by the end of the season.
