Author's standalone novel with paper thin Supernatural overlay

I don't know that I'd really call this a Supernatural novel, as the Supernatural characters seem to have been inserted to play fairly minor roles in a story that was probably written as a standalone, unrelated novel, and then retooled to fit them in. When I read a Supernatural novel where the author is more interested in the characters he creates than the Supernatural characters, I generally skip the sections involving those characters and just follow the Supernatural characters. In this one I was skipping so much of it that I just gave up and never finished the book.
The author is a competent writer. Just using Supernatural fans as a step stool to bigger things. I'd rather read Supernatural tie-ins written by authors who have a real passion for the show.
