5.0 out of 5 starsA book that can bring out that intensity of emotion, that can stoke a fire so deeply in my soul is a must-read in my book.
Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2018
Folsom was MADDENING, in the best way possible. As I was reading I was left with anger burning so deeply in my belly; I’m not sure anything could slake it. A book that can bring out that intensity of emotion, that can stoke a fire so deeply in my soul is a must-read in my book. I don’t read many dystopian novels, but the themes of Folsom – so similar to that of the Hunger Games – struck a chord with me and forced me to take notice of things we all take for granted.

This is a plot unlike any other I’ve read. While the idea of a world predominantly devoid of men isn’t a new one – I’ve had conversations about how amazing it would be and how we’d need very few men – the humanity of what that world might look like never occurred to me. Folsom lent a blinding light on how absurd a position women could put a man in if forced to do nothing but father children with willing women. It was a gut-punch to see how quickly we could make them nothing but another commodity to be traded.

Gwen was everything. I wasn’t sure of her in the first chapter; there seemed to be something too soft, too timid about her, she quickly dispelled those fears. Her unique intelligence and ability to look beyond the propaganda she’d been served her entire life gave her a thorny kind of strength, she refused to let anyone close enough to her to sway her from her convictions; any time someone tried to repress her ideologies she struck back with no apologies. Her desire to bring a revolution to the complacency she’d lived with her entire life was awe-inspiring and a picture of the significance of true feminism.

I was surprised by how much empathy I felt for the End Men. Two days ago, I would have easily told you that I would implement the exact system that existed in this book. Today, I would tear down the walls trying to prevent something like that from ever happening. To people who think that romance isn’t an intellectual genre, that it has nothing to offer the world, you’re wrong and this book, this dystopian romance that expands on a society we’ve all postulated about, exemplifies just how much romance has to teach the world.

I have read several books from both Tarryn Fisher and Willow Aster, some I’ve loved and some I’ve absolutely hated. And for that, I find them both to be must-read inkslingers, anyone who can make me feel so profoundly after reading the words they’ve put on paper is doing something incredible. I have never left a book by either author without feeling their stories deep in my soul and, to me, that is the surest sign of a superb author. This book joins a long list of their books that go beyond a story to become an experience.

I was intrigued when a book tuber said this was the male version of the handmaid's tale. The world was interesting and at first I liked that women ruled. But then I saw the cracks and Folsom is not happy being an End Men. Gwen's job was very cool but I found her character all over the place.

I’m quite shocked this is a work of Fisher’s. The characters are so one dimensional and the writing isn’t fleshed out like her usual prose. For such a heavy topic, this story only skims the surface and then the sex scenes are thrown in almost offensively. This is a story about sex trafficking and yet fails to explore sex in a believable way from the victim’s POV.

I enjoyed Folsom. Gwen and Foley’s relationship left me yearning for more. I realize this is just book 1...but I want MORE. I want all the answers now.

I love Tarryn AND Willow’s writing. I maybe went into this expecting more...I don’t know. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the book and will absolutely get book 2, but like I said, I just wanted MORE

I'm not really a huge fan of dystopian novels, but I was intrigued by the idea behind this. I felt that the developing the setting and backstory could use work as it sometimes felt rushed and got a bit lost from bouncing with little build up
I'm not sure if I'm really interested in finishing the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity
Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2018
**My review contains some minor plot spoilers**

Very original storyline. Folsom is one of only twelve men left on the planet. Women are in charge. But, despite the endless research, sperm fertilizing an egg still seems to be the only way to repopulate the planet. So, the men are put to work. Seems fun for them, right? Not for Folsom. Having sex with three women per day can get tiresome. And lonely. He doesn't get to choose. He's the property of the government.

But then he meets Gwen. Yes, she desperately wants a baby but she also doesn't see Folsom as a machine. She wants to know him. And that throws him.

I think the authors missed an opportunity here. The world they built with all women in power isn't much better. Of course there will always be corruption but that's all we saw. They didn't show us any of the ways things would improve. That was disappointing.

Also, they completely ignored our two most basic and prominent questions that needed answers:
1. Do STDs not exist anymore? All that unprotected sex. Eww.
2. What the hell happened that killed off all the men? There was no back story.

I also encountered the infamous Fisher plot hole. How can the Pippas exist unnoticed? Every pregnancy and sex of a baby is well documented. I don't get it.

There was also an infuriating cliffhanger. I just don't know what's going to happen since Folsom and Gwen's story isn't complete yet book two is from another character's pov. The originality kept me turning the page, otherwise I would have rated this book lower. I recommend passing on this one.

I was very intrigued by the premise of this and at first, I was totally into it, I even found myself telling my husband about it (and he actually listened). It felt different, edgy and made you think.

Then about the halfway mark…it fell apart for me, it just felt so rushed, like frantic. I was clenching my teeth while I read it, even…and then there was that ending. I'm not upset that it had a cliffhanger, either…only how it played out. Ultimately, the world Fisher and Aster created just sort of felt too crazy and too sad for me. Despite that, I think I will read the next book, Jackal. I have to know how this ends, at least I think I do...

3.0 out of 5 stars 2.75 Annoyed at Cliffhanger Stars
Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2018
This was... interesting and different. Unusual for me, it wasn't the love story that kept me interested- it was the society. I wanted to know more about this unexplained phenomena that killed the men. I wanted to hear about how women went about rebuilding society and what their day to day lives were like. The luke warm, meh on development, romance was back seat for me. And the end!? SPOILERS ahead. The fact that they killed the kid when Gwen had given up her helicopter spot for him was infuriating. AND THEN to have her craptastic sister living with Folsom and him delivering her baby!? That was the ending Gwen deserved. And regardless of the fact that literally nothing was solved at the end of this book, I won't be reading the next.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could’ve been great
Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2019
This was a great premise and I loved the daring idea and the author’s ambition. I also loved the way the author started off with the H&h having an unemotional sexual encounter and how they made something more of it as the weeks progressed. However the romance left the building about halfway through and the Hero did not earn the title. Also if you are a jealous reader I also think this may be a miss for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars I am just heartbroken
Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2018
To be honest, the premises are intriguing and the read is hot at the beginning, sort of dystopian setting. I came to love Folsom. But then I though that instead to use him that way, a sperm bank would make more sense. Then, toward the end I was heartbroken - that was not the way I though it will end. So I went ahead to read Jackal and could not concentrate on his story because I was worry about Folsom and Gwen and still not get a proper ending for them. So, no, this was not an easy read even the writing is great.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gave me anxiety
Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2018
I did enjoy this book and I like the idea of it. I did skip through some chapters since I got a little bored. I would prefer if the 2nd book was a continuation of Gwen and Folsom, but it seems to be completely separate and about jackal. I just think their story has a lot of open ends that could be finished in a book based on just them.
That being said, this book gave me anxiety which is maybe also why I skipped some parts.
