How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

Surprising. Good characters, especially the narrator. But an even better world and plot. That being said, the last 15% of the book takes an abrupt turn, which seems out of character mood with the rest of it. Jarring. That is my only quibble. And even that is not such a big deal in the end. The story is refreshingly unique and will stay with you. The writing is excellent, something I appreciate very much. Plenty of insights regarding human nature and a relentless pace that compels attention. Closest thing to the much revered Gene Wolfe I’ve run across.

3.0 out of 5 starsAn engaging read, I suppose, but nothing special
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 26, 2022
I enjoy a book that has characters I can relate to and care about. That is accomplished here. It kept me engaged until the end.
That said, the brutality in the prison got tiresome after a while. They're mean...we get it. The idea of a decadent, dying society that can no longer fix the technological wonders they have was clever.
Maybe he could have saved some of the subplots for other books. Stefan's got mind powers he uses once and that's about it. He's contributed to a book on how to save the world that causes mobs - sometimes the book's existence is important, other times not at all. There is an evil man in the next cell, but what makes him so evil is never explained. Just needed another bad guy. Oh, and web children, and an underworld. It's just all a bit much.
Still, it is a diverting read - it is a pretty good book. Just a dark mood and a bit too much going on.

5.0 out of 5 stars such a great book

The author has a facile, compelling command of language and startlingly original and interesting themes. The characters each came to life effectively often as exemplars of some concept or ideal. Tchaikovsky reminds me greatly of Gene Wolfe and that is high praise indeed.

Lots of great vocabulary and silly Englishesque sounding sentences. In the orange end-of-world dusk of sci-fi neigh-fantasy stories here lies an improbable adventure. I have to go now, I think a McArthur is coming!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just read it!

This is another wonderful story by Adrian Tchaikovsky! The world building is great while leaving you with the desire to know more. Equally, the characters and their stories are complex without relying on them solely to keep you invested in this smart page-turner! A dying world, full of life. Alien, and yet undeniably human and familiar. Cage of souls is a modern adventure that is reminiscent of the verdant, mystery filled jungle forays of some of the great classics.

Masterful example of world building, please read this; I hope a sequel is in the works but it is not required at all.

I've read a fair amount of sci fi, and the one word that I always think of to describe them is "bleak" . Somehow the author of this book wrote a bleak tale without it feeling that way, and it was wonderful.

If I would have read the plot I probably would have passed on reading this, it’s not bad and if your hard on for some end of the world sci-fi then it’s definitely worth reading. It’s really just that I want to embrace the optimistic possibilities for the future instead of wallow in the doom and gloom of inevitability.

This writer is always interesting. The story line is good. The observations about how humans value the wrong things and our probable dystopian future are well done
