I received an ARC copy, even though I am buying it. :) I like to support my one-click buy authors.
First of all, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this novel. It's a fantasy set in a dystopian world about magic being forbidden. Although I do enjoy dystopian stories here and there, I wasn't sure if this would be one of them.
Well, I stayed up all night so I could finish it. This book was wisely crafted and there were some twist and turns I thought I figured out and others, I didn't see coming.
Second, Ridley's love interest with Archer. This set up was done well. They aren't thrown in together, but they do have a history. No, they never dated before, it's from their childhood when Ridley had a different life, one where magic wasn't forbidden. Their dynamic I enjoyed.
Third, Ridley's friends from the past and present. As the story progresses, you learn about her two best friends and friends from her past. The few flashbacks or memories help the story move along and give more insight on Ridley.
Last, Ridley's father is amazing! All right, I want to talk a little bit about him, because he is the only parent she has. Her mom died when magic backfires so-to-speak and her dad has been her sole parent. At the beginning of the story, you get the feeling of how she looks after him, but OH MY GOODNESS, you are misinformed. He has done a FANTASTIC job of keeping her safe from the government. Oh, he is truly an amazing character!
All in all, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in magical dystopian novels, good writing, and interesting characters. Buy the book!
Now, I have to wait for her next novel of the series.
