How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

4.0 out of 5 starsAddress to the 1&2 Star Reviews
Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2018
There are several 1&2-star reviews that almost prevented me from reading this book. Below I address some of their main points to help other readers know what to expect if they read this book.
Reading other reviews, one has no idea if this is a lame attempt at a Gothic or if it is way to dark and creepy to be romantic. Hopefully my review helps you determine the answer.
There is a difference between Gothic and Horror. This is a Gothic, and a Romance Gothic at that. It reminded me a bit of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey which is a satire on the Gothic Penny Dreadfuls coming out at the time. This book like Austen’s is over the top. The heroine is constantly gasping, and her breasts are always heaving. But, that is part of what makes this a Gothic. The almost nonsensical fear and vivid imagination of a slightly vapid heroine. The reviewers who claim this isn’t a Gothic don’t know what a classic Gothic is. Personally, I thought it was sufficiently dark to be classified a Gothic Romance.
Readers also appear to be upset that despite having feelings for Damien Darcie suspects him of being the murderer. But, this also is a classically Gothic theme. The heroine almost always naively suspects the hero of something while at the same time falling in love with him. I’m afraid those are the rules.
This book is a great reminder of why most romance authors tell the story from the perspectives of both the H&h. It would have made a world of difference to get Damien’s perspective every once and awhile. Darcie tends to repeat herself and she thinks herself into circles several times. Damien’s perspective would have given the reader a nice break and a little insight into his view of Darcie and himself. This is my one real complaint and what kept it from being a 5-star book.
The love scenes were a bit mild. Sorry to ruin anyone’s innocence but they are not “graphic” as some reviews claim. Also, PLEASE stop reading books with “steamy” in the description and then giving them a bad rating because there is sex! I don’t read books with “YA” in the description and then give it 1-star because there is no sex. It is unfair to the author that you didn’t do your due diligence. It took me literally 30 seconds to determine there was going to be love scenes.
For me, this book did an excellent job of using the classic Gothic motifs and themes. It was it dark and creepy while still being a light and whimsically romantic read.
Romance-5/5 Steaminess-3/5 Explicitness-2/5

I was not able to make it past the sniveling, sanctimonious first paragraph. Why everything these days has to include a horribly misplaced political statement is beyond me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overwritten. A chore to get through

This was a chore to get through. I expect heavy suspense in my gothics - sweaty hands, maybe something slithery in the pit of my stomach but I got nothing but boredom here. The author spends inordinate time on description and the heroine's internal dialogue to the point where a single, short conversation between two people may take a dozen pages. To make matters worse, the heroine is a dim witted mouse whose head I have no desire to spend inside of. When the hero wonders what and why it is he is drawn to the heroine for, the reader is left wondering the same thing since we don't really know what she looks like or what she is about except that everyone treats her pretty poorly, she acts like a twit and spends an inordinate amount time thinking about her sad past which makes the reader feel like she only feels sorry for herself. She sneaks around the house, jumps at her own shadows and doesn't make a single effort to do something positive for herself like move forward with her life especially seeing how lucky she is to have gotten that job and was so quickly elevated to a position that allows her to do what she loves more than anything. Grow a spine girl! Disappointing read and not recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dull

This book felt so slow. I put it down many times, thinking that maybe I wasn't in the mood for it, but no. It was just a slow, meandering read. The heroine was a nothing character just being tossed through life, trying to survive. She didn't seem to have goals or interests outside of survival and the male lead. The male lead was a drama queen, the don't love me because I'm dAnGeRoUs type. The villain is Jack the Ripoff who is responsible for every bad thing that has ever happened.

So, yeah. I can't think about anything I liked about this book, but as it was too dull to loathe, it gets 2 stars.

This book was just not to my liking. Too worde and ridiculous. I kept turning pages to get to the juice of this tale. I could have written a better story. Save yourself the time to read this book, it is not worth it..

I gave it a try,it was free. Started out descent but just got to be too much. She kept repeating sayings, thinking about how attractive the guy was when she thought he was a murder. Just not realistic in thought patterns. No suspense just over exaggerating situations. Wanted to like this book. Couldn't finish it.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Read

I was hoping for a book with more substance. The plot had promise, but got lost in the gratuitous sex and poor development. I found the main character insipid and naive. Very disappointing.

Too much writing the inner doubts then no doubts of the heroine. There ought to be more dialogue. I finished the book but not that great a read.

Although the story was intriguing I never got captivated. I didn't finish reading after halfway through. I think it's just not my style, the gothic mystery.

Turned out better than I thought it was going to. It was a very dark story. Similar to Jack the Ripper, the era and the murders were comparable. The guy I thought was the murderer turned to be the good guy.

I had the hardest time finishing this book. Chick is made out as some weakling who can't make any decisions about her life. Biker aspect is like every other biker book.

With the words Dark Gothic, I really expected more but it was just a typical cheesy who-done-it with too much inner heroine dialogue, bought in July and just finished, painful to get through
