4.0 out of 5 starsAddress to the 1&2 Star Reviews
Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2018
There are several 1&2-star reviews that almost prevented me from reading this book. Below I address some of their main points to help other readers know what to expect if they read this book.
Reading other reviews, one has no idea if this is a lame attempt at a Gothic or if it is way to dark and creepy to be romantic. Hopefully my review helps you determine the answer.
There is a difference between Gothic and Horror. This is a Gothic, and a Romance Gothic at that. It reminded me a bit of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey which is a satire on the Gothic Penny Dreadfuls coming out at the time. This book like Austen’s is over the top. The heroine is constantly gasping, and her breasts are always heaving. But, that is part of what makes this a Gothic. The almost nonsensical fear and vivid imagination of a slightly vapid heroine. The reviewers who claim this isn’t a Gothic don’t know what a classic Gothic is. Personally, I thought it was sufficiently dark to be classified a Gothic Romance.
Readers also appear to be upset that despite having feelings for Damien Darcie suspects him of being the murderer. But, this also is a classically Gothic theme. The heroine almost always naively suspects the hero of something while at the same time falling in love with him. I’m afraid those are the rules.
This book is a great reminder of why most romance authors tell the story from the perspectives of both the H&h. It would have made a world of difference to get Damien’s perspective every once and awhile. Darcie tends to repeat herself and she thinks herself into circles several times. Damien’s perspective would have given the reader a nice break and a little insight into his view of Darcie and himself. This is my one real complaint and what kept it from being a 5-star book.
The love scenes were a bit mild. Sorry to ruin anyone’s innocence but they are not “graphic” as some reviews claim. Also, PLEASE stop reading books with “steamy” in the description and then giving them a bad rating because there is sex! I don’t read books with “YA” in the description and then give it 1-star because there is no sex. It is unfair to the author that you didn’t do your due diligence. It took me literally 30 seconds to determine there was going to be love scenes.
For me, this book did an excellent job of using the classic Gothic motifs and themes. It was it dark and creepy while still being a light and whimsically romantic read.
Romance-5/5 Steaminess-3/5 Explicitness-2/5

2.0 out of 5 starsOverwritten. A chore to get through
Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2016
This was a chore to get through. I expect heavy suspense in my gothics - sweaty hands, maybe something slithery in the pit of my stomach but I got nothing but boredom here. The author spends inordinate time on description and the heroine's internal dialogue to the point where a single, short conversation between two people may take a dozen pages. To make matters worse, the heroine is a dim witted mouse whose head I have no desire to spend inside of. When the hero wonders what and why it is he is drawn to the heroine for, the reader is left wondering the same thing since we don't really know what she looks like or what she is about except that everyone treats her pretty poorly, she acts like a twit and spends an inordinate amount time thinking about her sad past which makes the reader feel like she only feels sorry for herself. She sneaks around the house, jumps at her own shadows and doesn't make a single effort to do something positive for herself like move forward with her life especially seeing how lucky she is to have gotten that job and was so quickly elevated to a position that allows her to do what she loves more than anything. Grow a spine girl! Disappointing read and not recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gothic Book Taking Place in England, 1828
Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2021

DARK DESIRES is the first book in the DARK GOTHIC SERIES. Each book may be read as a stand alone. It has romance, mystery and suspense. It is told from a third person, from the heroine's point of view. It takes place in England, 1828. The heroine is only 20, and the hero is a doctor, so there must be an age-gap. His age was never revealed. I would have liked to have known.

Darcie Finch was in a dire situation. She was penniless, hungry and homeless. Her step-father had betrayed her. She was desperate and had no other alternatives, but to go to her older sister for help. Her sister that now went by the name Mrs. Feather, who was the madam of a brothel. Out of other choices, Darcie went to her sister. Betrayal by a man, had changed and hardened her sister. Yet, the sister gave her an alternative to being a prostitute. She could be a maid. “Go to Curzon Street, to Doctor Damien Cole. Tell him I sent you and that I'll thank him to do this one favor for his old friend, Mrs. Feather.” She also told Darcie, “Don't come back! And mind, have a care of Dr. Cole. He is a hard man, a man to fear. Stay out of his way. Stay clear of his work, and keep your nose out of his secrets.” Of course, she didn't listen. Darcie was taking the long walk to Curzon Street, when she is almost run over by a carriage. The Carriage of Doctor Damian Cole. He is so handsome, kind and caring, as he helped Darcie into his carriage. She might have fallen in love with him instantly. But they were not alone. There was a man on the opposite side of the carriage. Only he was not alive. They were sharing the carriage with a corpse.

Darcie is so thankful for the job, and you would think she would try to just do her job and mind her business. Instead, she is that girl that you tell her not to go in the basement, and she will still go in the basement. The Good Doctor overlooks a lot to keep Darcie by his side. She found him exciting, dangerous, and terrifyingly beautiful. She has a trust issue with men and for good reason. She is smart, but doesn't always act it. I found her more frustrating as the story unfolded. In the end he finally earned her trust. I thought it was a good Gothic Book that kept you guessing till the end.

Suspenseful serial killer mystery. Damian is more than he seems, but is he dangerous? Darcie finds him intriguing, especially when she discovers what he studies in his lab. Despite her doubts, Darcie is attracted to this enigmatic stranger and drawn into his dark obsession. I like the buildup of suspense, and the revelations about Mrs. Feather, the girl in the picture on Damian's desk, the men hauling the heavy trunk, and the missing maid. Interesting details are revealed throughout the story that made me want to keep reading. This historical romance includes mystery and some unexpected anatomy lessons. I wonder what surprises the next novel holds. Thanks to the author for a complimentary copy of this title. I submit this review voluntarily.

I do love a good gothic novel, and this one hits every note for me. Female character in forced new circumstance, this being the bankruptcy of her family. Period drama and suspense because this takes place at the time of the Ripper murders. Secretive hero, which is present in Dr. Damian Cole. I like the fact that this heroine is not in your face about certain things, but she is not afraid to be who she wants. She is not shamed away from her sister. She doesn't shy away from the doctor, but doesn't flaunt a relationship, either. All in all, a fantastic beginning to s series of stand alone gothic novels.

Dark Desires Book 1 by Eve Silver. This is the first time I have read a Gothic Romance Novel. I have to say that I loved it. This story was amazing. I instantly fell in love with the dark mysterious Dr. Damien Cole. His character is what drew me in and the narrator very well selected. My heart went out to these two who suffered life in two different ways yet made its way to happiness. This author is new to me but I will have a second glance. I purchased Book 2. This is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A deliciously spooky romance.

I did not even read any of the reviews for this book, I just liked the cover so I bought it. I never do that but I'm so glad that I did. I loved this book, it was like the books I read in my younger years, wonderful with a lot of chills built in. The only problem I found with this book was that I couldn't put it down, which meant that I was finishing it up at 2 in the morning when everyone else was in bed. Rather embarrassing to be cutting off lights and sprinting to bed trying to outrun the darkness.
In looking over this review, I see that I have not mentioned the delicious romance part. Both Darcie and Damien are great, two people who have been hurt by life. The way they handle their circumstances and find love kept me turning pages long after I should have placed the bookmark and sought my rest.
This book was free, a smart move on someone's part, there is no way I'm not going to buy the next book in MS Silver's gothic series. I'm just hoping that it can live up to this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Danger Lurks
Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2014

This was an excellent story that was full of gothic angst (lots of doubt and misunderstanding, and jumping to conclusions). The romance tumbles lazily throughout the story, and goes more into romantic thoughts that what each other various body parts felt.

The few sex scenes are not graphically pornographic but were more poetic.

The story is set sometime during or just after the gruesome murders in Whitechapel. The murderer is mutilating women, stealing their hearts, and the heroine may have just unwittingly begun to work for the man who is skilled to do such terrible work, Dr. Damian Cole.

Darcie, though, sees a good side to the doctor, and keeps trying to convince herself that he is not what the clues she finds keep trying to tell her.

There is danger lurking awfully close, though, and Darcie is headed right for it.

The author does an excellent job of working her story in its historical setting. It felt authentic. The characters are written very well, and the atmosphere is both beautiful and spooky as needed. When Darcie's heart beats with fear, or beats with excitement around Damien you feel a part of the scene and as if you are beside her.

This is gothic romance very like the gothic romances I used to read as a teenager. Somewhat formulaic but you forget this as the author's words pull you into the story she is telling.

I think I have a new favourite author!

How mesmerising was this story, I was swept away with the old fashioned ways of old England.
The story was written with such heart from the old ways and when an author can sweep you off your feet and make you feel as if you were right there amongst it all.
Feeling, smelling and seeing everything that it describes is one incredible feeling.

The story at hand is exciting, mysterious and thrilling!

So much is going on and we meet fascinating characters that each hold a special candle light of there own right in this story coming together.
My heart pounded,my stomach squeezed with anxiousness.
I lost my breath with each word I read, the feelings were real and I have not lost myself in a mystery like it in quite some time.
I was fascinated from beginning to the end.
A read I will remember for quite some time.

I found a new favorite author! Five Stars!

Anybody can write a book, as evidenced by the thousands of poor excuses for romance novels out there. However, some people were born with God given talent. Eve Silver is one of those gifted writers. Her rich descriptions pull you in and you can't stop reading. If you are sick of reading about "eye rolls" and authors using vulgar language as a poor excuse for romance, you will love this book. It has none of the crap, and all of the intrigue. The characters are deep and complex, and the story leaves you guessing who the evil-doer is until the end.

Sweet and romantic, yet dark and mysterious. I highly recommend Dark Desires.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written historical romance

Darcie was once well off, but is now broke and has no choice but to take a job with Doctor Damien Cole, a mysterious doctor. She is warned to stay out of his business and his secrets. Though unsure about the doctor, she takes the job so she doesn't have to work as a prostitute in order to survive.

Set in London during the Jack the Ripper murders, I thought this story was very well done with enough suspense, an accurate historical setting and romance to keep my attention till the end of the book. One of my favorite parts is when they meet and Doctor Cole has a dead body with him. Of course, he had good reason for this, but she doesn't know that. This and other similar strange situations made it believable for her to have doubts about his character. I also like how Ms. Silver took the Jack the Ripper story and made it her own. This added even more suspense and suspicion to the story and added more conflict between Darcie and Damien, adding to her doubts about him.

I highly recommend this to fans of historical romance.
