Berkley Street: a nice place to visit? YES

Do you like ghost stories? Do you like Horror? Aren't they the same, you ask.. No , they are not. This series is, to me, a new benchmark in Horrific Ghost stories.
You see, the ghosts in these 9 books don't just go bump in the night, they actively seek victims. This is not readily apparent until the later books, which is another aspect of the books that I enjoyed.
The initial novel focuses on a house that is on the titular street, and the main character trying to uncover what became of his parents years before. The home is presided over by a vicious spirit which inhabits a pond and routinely lured unsuspecting people to their deaths, only to be kept captive.
After surviving the first novel, Shane uses his hard won knowledge on how to battle ghosts to investigate a disappearance at a lighthouse.
As the novels advance Shane acquires additional allies and, as the stories unfold, an insidious enemy that is working against him. THIS aspect of the series is underplayed initially but eventually becomes a major part of the story and really made the storyline more compelling to me.
As each novel ends, there are what are termed as Bonus Scenes which give a little look at events from the books, set at the time that they happened. Several of the ghosts are very old and the bonus scenes flash back to the events that shaped a portion of the story. These are nice little asides that could be fleshed out further, but are just nice little bites that add oompf to the story you just finished.
As to the horror I spoke about, there are some VERY graphic suggestions and depictions of death in the stories. Some are quite unsettling.
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed these 9 novels and the rollercoaster ride they take you on. If you like ghost stories with an edge, READ this series. If you like a hardboiled protagonist who is resourceful, READ this series.
