Jim Carrey at the top of his game

On his birthday Justin Cooper wishes that his dad Jim Carrey can’t lie anymore. That completely changes Carrey’s life who is a consummate BSer. That’s when the laughs in Liar Lair really take off as Carey expresses his every inner thought to everyone he runs into which are usually very embarrassing. Of course Carrey mixes in some physical comedy as well which he was always so good at such as when he tries to say a blue pen is red and it turns on him. In the end this is a family film as Carrey tries to win his son back who he has estranged for being such a bad dad who never tells the truth. If you want to see Carrey at the top of his game Liar Liar is a good start.

Not funny anymore

I saw Liar Liar when I was young and I remember thinking it was really funny back then. Watching it as an adult I chuckled a few times but that's it. The protagonist's behavior is unbelievable. Even back in the 90's he would've been fired very quickly. The protagonist is also extremely unlikable as a person so it's tough to root for him. Also, the movie has a bit of an identity crisis. It seems to be trying to be an adult comedy but also a family drama. Some movies are just better left as memories.

This blu ray version has all the buck, but none of the bang.

Alright, this review is on the extras and look in and of the movie on blu ray. I would give the movie a 5 out of 5. The movie is about a guy who lies all the time. To his wife, to his kid and to everyone else. He even lies for his job. He is a lawyer. On day, his son wishes that he could no longer lie. If only for one day. So, it happens! The man finds out that no matter what or how he tries, he can not lie. This is especially hard when he is at work on a case trying to help a lady get more from her husband who she is divorcing. The man knows he has to stretch the truth to win the case, but can not. The movie is very funny and can be watched over and over again. I still have the stubs from when my dad, brother and I saw it in the theater.

Now I know what your asking yourself. If he likes the movie so much, why the 3 out of 5? I will tell you why. First, this movie definitely looks less than 100% on blu ray. I actually looks like you are watching it on a VHS tape. I am sure the DVD version looks the same when played on a blu ray player, so it is what it is. The other thing is this, there are no special features at all on this copy of the film. On the DVD you have things likes out takes, deleted scenes, trailer, commentary and more, but on the blu ray there is none of that. Also, the menu is quite odd. There is no writing telling you what is what. Just symbols. Maybe this is how things in the UK are. This is the first DVD I have ever gotten that was from the UK, and I am not saying anything bad about it. Just that it is odd. So, the movie is great. It can be watched again and again. But if you want to own the movie, I would go with the standard DVD. For the fact of the special features and the fact that the movie does not look any better. I hope they release a U.S. version!

This review is in reference to the collector's edition DVD.
I love the movie and I thought I would spend a little extra getting the special edition DVD vs. the regular DVD, but I don't really feel it was worth it. The "outtakes" are only 30 seconds in total. "Bridging the comedy chasm" was about 15 minutes long and wasn't terribly exciting or insightful. My recommendation is to skip the collector's version

Overall funny movie with a good moral theme not to lie. However, not for kids under the age of 12 due to the sex scene when he has an affair and the sexual innuendos he has with his clients. Otherwise, we enjoyed Jim Carrey who is very talented and he eventually wins he son and wife back. Good story.

Jim Carey is a funny guy and he's up to his usual antics in Liar Liar. Even though we've seen his routine of facial expressions before the movie still had me belly laughing on a number of occasions. Gets a little on the zany side toward the end. I'd recommend this to a friend. Good for all ages.
