volume 8 in the Criminal series
Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2018
While it has been advertised as the first Brubaker-Phillips graphic novel, this is really volume 8 of their amazing Criminal series. The main character is an 18 or 19 year old female who has been sent, against her will, to rehab. She meets a young man, just a year or two older than her, and a relationship ensues.
Mr. Philips artwork is, as expected, very good. He has mastered the color and setting of noir. I've rated this 3.5 stars, so it sits lower than most Brukaer-Phillips books in my rankings (they just finished up the fantastically fun "Kill or Be Killed" earlier this year"). The reason I dinged it is because I work in the treatment industry (a terrible industry filled with a tremendous amount of unscrupulous owners and operators), and it doesn't get all of the elements correct. Without my experiences, I'd rate it higher.
