A breath of fresh air(bender)

I have to say, I was so relieved to see that a new artist and writer were coming onboard to follow up this series. The amount of work that Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru have put into the comics up to this point is astronomical and obviously a labor of love, but the way they presented the characters felt more like fan fiction than canon. It didn’t make them unreadable - they were still fun, but....
So imagine the pleasant surprise when I saw that a new writer and artist would take up the mantle of creating the ATLA comics. And boy, was it a breath of fresh air! The art is stunning and dynamic. The writing is subtle, quick in its humor, and poignant in its quiet moments. Sokka, who I felt had been reduced to the comic relief role in previous comics, has been restored as the brave and funny leader. Artistically, the eyes are so expressive and the lineart feels more organic.
I am so impressed with the Imbalance series. It makes me excited and hopeful that we will see more comics following the beloved Gaang, as created by Faith Erin Hicks and Eric Wartman.
