I like to pick up just about any nonfiction book that interests me at the book review site that I frequent the most often as I adore nonfiction. I'm not sure what I was expecting for this book, but what I got wasn't quite what I had imagined. I'm not even sure how to describe it. In fact, I recommend checking out the Look Inside at Amazon to get a sense of what this book is like. It's basically a book of one woman sharing her insights and random thoughts on a variety of topics that are not arranged in any particular order. There are numbered random "scathingly brilliant ideas," some with just a phrase beneath or a couple of lines or paragraphs. Certainly, don't look for depth on any topic; in fact, many of the concepts don't have any depth at all. It did definitely feel a bit haphazard and perhaps too random at times. The writing style was choppy and jerky, which certainly doesn't make for a good reading experience. I also thought that parts of it were perhaps a little too precious, like having a forward instead of a foreword, and having the book split into appendices rather than chapters or sections (and the appendix titles bore no relation to the contents because they are so random). I will admit, though, that some of her thoughts intrigued me when they were explored a little more deeply. It is interesting, too, to see inside the mind of another human being, something we don’t often have a chance to do.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
