This is the kind of book that you get into enjoy and you can't believe that they've packed so much stuff into the book and you're not finished with it yet. I mean you look down and you see you're halfway done with the book and you feel like you've read 3 books it's that good of a book
Definitely adult fare (Very much MilSF...with all sorts of well and properly described violence...), but perhaps the best yet from Mark to date (Not to say that they're not all good all the same...)- each one of his stories getting better and better as he refines his craft.
In a profession where most die young and fast, beware of those who live to a "ripe retirement age". They aren't nice. They don't stick to, silly notions like, "Fair Fights" and the like. They fight very nasty unless ordered NOT to. Murdoch is this distilled, leveraging everything in his disposal to actually do the, "right things". And you'll be rooting for the man and agreeing with pretty much everything he does. He's very much a hero...and the legend implied in the story...but be on the wrong side of him and you won't live very long...and it might be very, very painful in the ending.
Like the blurb says...old mercs don't die...YOU do...
What're you waiting for? Go buy it and find out a bit about the man...it's worth the time to read and is very much likely to be one of your favorite people from the 4HU right on up there with Alexis. I know I want to see more out of the character after this story.
Dirty Deeds, done dirt cheap. So much depth and character and pure fun. This read like a good movie on so many levels. Amy Wandrey continues to rise in my eyes as a worthy successor to the greats of the 1960’s. I really enjoyed the long for. Plotting and echoes of the Cavaliers and their big battle wherein the lost Murdock. And that return trip to The hill country on Earth had me feeling some old Heinlein in my bones. I laughed out loud with the reasoning Murdock had as he interrogated his first bunch of toughs on Tahiti. We need more heroes like this in our real world! Seriously, this was just plain fun to read. More please...
Left for dead in a assault landing, Abe Murdock, when he finally makes it back to Earth, discovers that he is officially dead. When he cannot get that bureaucratic nightmare squared away, he decides to move on to his chosen retirement retreat to enjoy the remaining years of his death in peace and quiet. If only the universe would allow that.....
Excellent old soldier character, surrounded by interesting folks. Murdock is the R. Lee Ermery of the 4 Horseman Universe, the archetype of the veteran NCO. Ride along with him as he proves that old does not mean you're done and that being rich in experience is a wealth that is of great value.
I have to tell you, Mark Wandrey is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. I really like his stories. The main character is great. A crusty old merc who is just trying to retire and enjoy his golden years. Damn aliens won't let him relax and take it easy. Great story and characters.
Only took a day and a half to finish reading. What happens when insertion goes wrong with the Cavaliers and you wake up dead... Officially. Months have passed and nobody can pronounce you living. So you retire to a nice planet you remember from years past. What could go wrong?
I think this story is the best of all his stories I have read so far! I admit I have only read 4HU books, but based on this and previous books, I bought two more non-Horsemen titles and will be starting them soonish.
