How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

David Bruce Whitsitt
5.0 out of 5 starsThe kinesthetic science of judo
Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2019
I began to get interested in judo through author Steve Scott's YouTube channel, The Welcome Mat, which features step-by-step lessons in judo, sambo and jujitsu techniques, judo philosophy, and practical theories of movement. I am too old and busted up to take up the sport of judo, but I do teach martial arts and self-defense, and this book helped me immeasurably. There were key concepts that Coach Scott outlined in his book that gave me a greater understanding of many techniques that I learned in traditional Japanese jujitsu and hapkido. I own many more of his books, and all of them are dense with minute breakdowns of specific skills and comprehensive explanations. This one in particular could be used as a textbook in a kinesiology course, as it clearly delineates the science of movement that is so critical to judo.

3.0 out of 5 starsFine book, though falls short of title description
Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2019
I think this book has something to offer to judo players, but with someone with a fair amount of kineseology knowledge I was expecting a little more kineseology in the book based on the title. I would have like more of "Technique X works well because is sets the player up in hip flexion allowing a powerful hip extension driven by the glutes to throw the partner." Or "a common fault for Technique Y is to allow Z to happen which reduces the effectiveness of the lats for throwing." There is some, for example a good explanation of the importance of ankle flexion for outer sweeps, just more nerdy info is what I was looking for.

The book gets into force generation and rotational aspects of judo, which is really kinematics, not kineseology. So overall I thought it was maybe a 3.5-4 star read, but with the misleading title I give it 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a must have

Just a few pages in, I knew this work was special. Steve Scott has a masterful ability of articulating ideas that others find difficult to express, then leading us into those ah-ha moments of realization. His depth and breadth of knowledge of the culture, philosophy, mechanics and application artfully combine with his ability to atomize concepts. His instructional prowess has produced a classic that every instructor and upper level student must read - and re-read. Not just for the grappling arts, the value of this book far exceeds its price. Thank you, Steve!

Content focuses more on vocabulary than substance. This is a subject ripe for explanation and description. Steve Scott does not convey his expertise in this area the book is a miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Important Book for Students of Judo
Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2020

Steve Scott’s Judo Advantage focuses on Judo’s principles of movement. Reading the book pushed me to examine my own use of kuzushi; think about how I handle/utilize space in randori; and underlined the importance of controlling the corners “shiho” of my opponent. I would recommend this book for Kyu ranks (like myself) who want to build a solid base/framework to think about movement in Judo. This is one of those books you underline and take notes in and then revisit it in a few years.

The author broke down the scientific principles related to performing the techniques of Judo. This is a very good book. I highly recommend it. This answers the how and why.

5.0 out of 5 stars an example for other martial arts authors to aspire to

I have many martial arts books, and I must say that this book is one of the most densely packed with information. Much of the information presented is specific to the sport of Judo, but the author goes so in-depth on the subject that I'm sure martial artists from other styles will take away something valuable from this book. In short, this one of the best books on martial arts I have ever read, and I don't even practice Judo.

I recommend this book to any player or coach of Judo. There is a wealth of information concerning the mechanics of the art packed into a fairly quick read. I found myself doing a lot of highlighting for future review.
