4.0 out of 5 starsA Fitting End to Tomasi's Run on the Character
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 10, 2018
Tomasi, Mahnke, and Gleason end their stellar Rebirth era run on Superman with a touching and fitting finale that sets the stage for Bendis' take afterwards. The final Tomasi story arc sees Superboy's alien friends from the previous volumes (Black Dawn) open a portal to the Bizarro version of Earth where everything is effectively backwards. When the miserable Bizzaro-Superboy travels through the portal to escape his life on "Htrae" it is up to the Kent family to try and fix what is broken on the other planet. The themes that have carried through Tomasi's run are certainly at their best here (family first and foremost), along with some great humor (the Bizarro version of Robin is an instant winner). The only real downside is that reading the backwards Bizzaro dialogue is often a bit mind numbing and gets to be a bit much. I felt the same when Grant Morrison famously explored Htrae and the Bizarro Justice League back during his All Star Superman book. That said, if you can power through the backwards dialogue it is worth it. Tomasi and team did a great job on the character and I will miss their upbeat, old fashioned take on Supes.
