5.0 out of 5 starsBest 120mm ITX Cooler I've Found
Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2019
As many of us ITX lovers know, finding just the right air cooler for your build can be tough. We need good thermals, good acoustics, and the right physical compatibility.

Personally I'm still too paranoid to make the jump to water cooling...and popping in an air cooler seems easier to me in a small build. Plus I had recently started taking interest in slim cases like the Silverstone FTZ01E and the Nouvolo Steck.

My previous build included a Cryorig C1 on an ATX motherboard in a mid tower case. And I was hoping I'd be able to use this big 140mm ITX cooler in a new ITX build. However after some research and testing...the heatsink was just too large for the cases I was looking at. Either Ram clearance became an issue on the ITX boards, or the heatsink would press up against the sides of cases.

I looked at other options for large 140 and 120mm low profile coolers with decent sized heatsinks, but was finding there would be compatibility issues...or lackluster cooling. I checked at a ton of builds on PCpartpicker, Youtube, and different tech forums. I looked over the offerings from Raijintek, Be Quiet, Thermalright, Noctua, you name it.

Then I saw that Scythe came out with the Big Shuriken 3 and it supported AM4 sockets...and I was intrigued. Their claims of total ram compatibility, low cooler height, and good cooling performance had me excited. So I looked at a few reviews on Youtube, read an article or two, then I ordered it.

Tested this baby out on an ASUS B450 ITX motherboard with Gskill TridentZ ram inside a Silverstone FTZ01E case. Absolutely zero issues fitting. The cooler was made in a way, that when oriented with the heatpipe bends pointing up, the cooler overhangs your rear I/O. So tall ram like the TridentZ are 100% compatible.

Cooling was pretty dang good...keeping my 2700X CPU at around 45c idle, 79c at full load in the second floor of a rather warm home. Thats a few degrees cooler than the beefier Cryorig that I previously used. Mind you the Cryorig was a 140mm cooler that was a tad heavier than the Scythe, and also had an extra heatpipe. Yet somehow the Scythe beat it.

And the Scythe fan noise isnt too bad...but I prefer Noctua...so I swapped in a 120mm slim fan from them (cooling performance was the same). All in all, the Big Shuriken 3 is a well performing, highly compatible CPU cooler thats worth a look at. I could really see this thing becoming a popular choice in the ITX & SFF community. Ill try to share some pics at a later date.

PS - Scythe customer service is also great. I had a small issue with the plastic spacers for the mounting bracket being too tight...and they sent me replacements free of charge. Definitely made installation and removal much easier.

3.0 out of 5 starsIt is a good cooler, but it is a shame they are using a slim 15mm fan for it
Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2022
It is a decent cooler, but I am disappointed by a few things:
1. The 15mm fan that is included in the box is a waste of plastic, it barely does anything, I would prefer if they sell this cooler without a fan at all for $10 less. (-1 star)
2. The 1700 mounting kit costs extra money where literally every other manufacturer gives it for free, it is not a huge deal as it is only $8, but still annoying (-1 star)
3. Even with Noctua 12x25 fan this cooler can barely cool something like a 12700k, I wouldn't recommend this cooler for anything more than 125W, maximum. I knew this from the begging as this is a low profile cooler, but still slightly disappointed

I have an older system that I built super-high-end at the time, into a rather compact case on an Asus MicroATX board. The mounts of the original Intel cooler stopped holding on, and the cooler was never that great... but it did fit into the very tight space.

This does too. It comes with Scythe thermal compound, but I used Artic MX-4. And when it works, it works very well.

You do need to remove the motherboard to affix this cooler, which was not the case with the Intel cooler. (Which, as I mentioned, stopped holding on.) It has pieces to attach to almost any kind of mounting holes.

There are a few downsides. First, the instructions are ludicrously vague. A few drawings, not much more. And second, my motherboard was solid with the previous fan, but this one throws a CPU Fan Error about 1/3 of the boot times. Even a reboot, when it was just fine, and will be again after pressing reset. Really stupid.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's installed and working. Decent Temps.

If you happen to own an HP Omen GT13-00xx case then this will work but you'll have to follow the Intel instructions. Including swapping back plates. The AMD brackets are too large for the Moria 3 motherboard. The screws in this kit are too large for the stock back plate so you can't just use the other mounting brackets. Use caution removing the stock plate as it is stuck on with sticky tape. A plastic wedge and some patience will have it off in no time. Try staying as close to the outer edge as you can just to be safe. *DON'T forget to install the rubber pad on the new plate before screwing things together. The Intel brackets will only really fit one way so don't get too fiddly with the multi-mount screw holes. It'll all line up. The flat edges face out by the way.

*Don't forget to remove the plastic cover on the cooler.

Idle didn't change much but once the fan gets going it holds temps down really well.

Edit 1: The fan has developed a deal breaking tick at all RPM's. It was going to be upgraded anyway but still worth noting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Difficult install but it works well

This is a nice quiet fan for my gigabyte w480 motherboard. But it's probably try to find a different one in the future because I found it difficult to use and it covers up the CPU fan connectors.

The instructions are abysmal multi-language pictographs. I was able to figure it out, but it took time and a few attempts putting things together, realizing the fan won't attach, and then taking it apart again. I also found it difficult to attach the fan once the adapter was in place. I could get one screw on fairly easily because I could line it up. The other was obscured by the memory, which the radiator covers so they had to be in place first. I spent fifteen minutes trying to get that one screw to thread into the hole.

Different motherboards with have different results. Overall, other than the installation, I've been happy with it. I have no plans to overclock anything, and it keeps the Intel CPU working temperature specs so I'm happy with it.

I did like that the fan could be removed to make the install as little easier, it reduced the weight and I was able to use tweezers to connect it to the motherboard connectors.

I'm just not sold on it for the next time.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent quality LP cooler.

My second Scythe cooler. Purchased for an ITX build.
Thermals are good for such a small cooler. Nothing outstanding , but decent for such a small format. Being the first time I've built in itx, I had a hard time with the install. Getting the two screws to allign with the mounting brackets took me nearly 20 min. If they were just a bit longer I think this problem would be alleviated.
Great product otherwise. Going to try a higher rpm static pressure fan and see what that can do for temps.

A good replacement for my previous version of this product the big shuriken 2 Rev B.

Though only thing keeping this from a 5 star was that I didn't see any info that it needed the stock am4 backplate which has been gone for a couple of years . Luckily I had a noctua am4 backplate that worked out with the Intel screws.

Can't comment on the included fan but build quality is the nicer compared to the BS2 included fan. I'm actually using a noctua industrial fan in my setup so I actually saw a large temp drop with the bigger surface area of the big shuriken 3.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great performance for a low-profile cooler with an easy install process on AM4.

Recently did a build into a CoolerMaster NR200 with the Scythe Big Shuriken 3 taking over cooling duties for my Ryzen 5 3600X. With the mesh side panel on the NR200, this thing rocks. Installation was easy, the cooler feels great with good build quality relative to its price, and it looks great as well in my opinion. I did swap the slim Scythe fan out for a full-size Arctic P12, which actually led to my one major gripe and a little bit of user error. With the Arctic fan, the CPU idles between 38-40C, and during normal use (like copying large amounts of data or gaming) it barely hits 60C.

Now, my gripe. Scythe is actually good enough to include longer screws to allow you to swap the fan if you want which is great. However, on my unit, one of the screw holes was just a bit larger than the others, and so one corner was loose. I ended up using a different, larger screw to secure the fan, but it damaged the heatsink itself slightly in the process. So, partly a lack of precision on that one hole cut, and partly user error.

If you're looking for an air cooler for an ITX gaming build, you can't go wrong with the BS3.

OK and performs good but if you CPU is 80W or more get something better is really good with a Noctua NF-A12x25 but that adds 25 dollars more to the total cost of the unit for that price there are better options. Do not get me wrong it keeps my 3700X at full load on AIDA 64 stress test at 70 degress on at RAVEN SFC

Great low profile cooler, temps are great if not overclock to much and noise level is decently quiet. Only problem I had was with remounting the cooler and fan after a monthly thermal paste change, one of the fan screw hole on the cooler stripped so in order to not have a harsh contrast I glued a screw top on the fan hole so it looks okay otherwise great product

Company website said it came with it's own backplate..... it does not. Got it to use with an FM2+ mobo. Had to drill out the offsets in order to work with backplate. Other than that, it worked great.

This cooler made my cpu drop 10 degrees compared to the wraith stealth stock cooler. I would've given this 5 stars based on performance and noise level, but I had a hard time screwing in the cooler to the retention brackets and ended up having to loosen the bracket a little and tighten it back after I got both sides of the cooler tightened.

All in all this is a great cooler! Much better temps than the stock cooler and at a great price! Used it on my B450M Steel Legend.
