After reading the first book in this series I was eager to read more and was not disappointed. I never knew I had an interest in historical fiction from this era, but read the first book on a recommendation. The second book, set in the same period with related characters, delivers again. With a focus on the early secret service and Naval Intelligence, it offers a spy novel flair too.

Shaun Lewis's much praised first book "The Custom of the Trade" was principally about a young Royal Navy submarine officer, Richard Miller, in the build up to and first year of the Great War, and "Now the Darkness Gathers" is a very worthy successor. It is not a sequel as such, but rather the adventures of Richard's younger brother Peter in Naval Intelligence prior to the start of the Great War. Although much has been written about the Intelligence Services and Bletchley Park, few people realise that much of their work was initially being done by the Royal Navy and this book will both entertain and educate the reader.

The author has used his own background in the Intelligence world and extensive research to produce a thrilling story that leaves one looking forward to his next book in the series.

With his first two books, Shaun Lewis is showing potential to be a John Buchan for the 21st Century.

Lewis's first novel - The Custom of the Trade was a cracking read, and it seems that he's done it again. Now the Darkness Gathers is a cracking work of historical fiction. I say fiction; but the author's credentials and research ensures that this novel is embedded with factual content that educates and entertains in equal measures. It's hard to imaging that today's security services grew from the bravery and fortitude of so few, who were so often maligned or misunderstood. The Millers were certainly heroes and I note from the author's note at the end of the book that we are to meet more of them in the coming books in this riveting series. The cliff-hanger at the end will leave impatient to read what happens in the next edition. Great job, and great read; highly recommended.
