I think out of the first three books to this series, Torrent is my least favorite—but that still isn’t enough for me to dock it a star. Like the previous books in the series, the editing has some teeth-grinding moments. There are punctuation and capitalization errors, and not all of the historical facts are correct. Sometimes things went a little too easily for Gabi, and a few characters seemed to be thrown in for the hell of it. The time travel logic was full of holes, and made me cringe.

To be honest, I wasn’t a fan of Gabi’s dad. He didn’t have much impact on the story in the long run, and most of the time I couldn’t help but feel that I should be waiting for him to breakdown. He got sucked back through time with his family that is spontaneously several years older than the last time he saw them… but after his brief initial reaction… he just gets over it. I was expecting more conflict surrounding him that never came.

Other characters, such as Rodolfo, didn’t play as big a part in the story as I had expected. At first, it felt as if Rodolfo was going to create a bit of a love triangle between the main characters. There was a hint of it—just a little—but then he too stepped to the sidelines and let Gabi and Marcello have their way. It was a little too easy. I wish there had been more conflict there.

Those points aside, I genuinely enjoyed the book. Like the first two books in the series, the narrative was action-packed, full of daring adventures, battles, tragedy, and heart-warming moments of love. I literally squealed in delight a few times. Despite all the negative things I could nitpick about this book, and this series, none of it matters in the long run. The book is so well put together, and the characters so vivid and well-written that it is hard to let the little negatives get to me. I loved the story despite it’s problems, and that’s a sure sign of a great book.

Would I recommend this book? Yes. Definitely. Would I read it again? In a heartbeat. If you enjoy YA fiction, you’ll love this series. I’m honestly anxious to move on to the next two books. I can’t wait to see what happens!

3.0 out of 5 starsI was a little dissapointed
Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2014
Once I got to the 3rd book I was a little disappointed with this series. It felt like a repeat of the last 2 books. I think the author should of summed up Gabbi and Marcello's relationship a lot quicker within the first 2 books then had the 2nd book about Lia and the 3rd about their time traveling. I was hoping she would elaborate more on the mystery of why they were able to travel back in time and specifically why only Gabbi and Lia? BUT that said, this book was still good. If you loved all the suspense and battles and emotional triumphs of the last books you'll still enjoy this one. It was written well and the characters are still just as likable. I just wasn't as sucked into this last book as the other 2.

This stunning finale (for now, anyway) to the River of Time series kept me up late into the night, but I didn't mind. Written in Lisa T. Bergren's winning style and as action-packed as the first two, Torrent holds an honored place on my bookshelf.

Summary:

Would you sacrifice your future for an uncertain past?

Gabriella and Evangelia Betarrini are just two normal American teenagers. Normal --except for the fact that they time travel to fourteenth-century Italy, where they've lived in castles they've seen as crumbling ruins, become swept up in historic battles, and fallen in love with handsome knights willing to do anything to keep them alive.

They've returned to the present to save their father, just short of his tragic death, and now all four return to the place that holds the girls' hearts, medieval Italy. But remaining there means facing great risk as the battle for territory wages on and the coming Black Plague looms. Will the Betarrinis truly be willing to risk it all? Or in facing death head-on, will they discover life as it was always meant to be lived?

What I Loved:

Everything.

Truly.

But to be more specific: I loved all the action and how there was never a good place to set it down. The plot just kept on twistin,' the River kept on rollin,' and I was swept up into the fabulous story.

Perhaps my favorite part of the entire River of Time series was how I seemed to feel everything. When Gabi panicked, my heartbeat raced. When she felt relieved, my shoulders slumped. And at one point in this book, when it seemed like all was lost, I was almost in tears, fearing imminent tragedy.

I refuse to spoil it for you, but the ending is absolutely wonderful. No threads are left loose, yet you get the feeling the story isn't over.

Thankfully, it might not be... :)

Why I Recommend This Book:

As I mentioned before, The River of Time series rocks and is, hands-down, the best series of books I've read this year. The faith element woven throughout the story blends beautifully and the romance is swoon-worthy. A strong heroine, 14th-century Italia, and great gulps of adventure provide an amazing read.

"'I think the trick to living fully,' I said, thinking through each word, 'is to appreciate what we have, day by day, regardless of what we know might come our way...If I live in fear of what might be, how can I truly live my life to the full in the present? And if I do not give myself to the day, to hope, to life, what do I miss?' I raised my eyebrows and shook my head. 'Life itself, I think. At least the way I wanna live it.'"

One word of advice: don't start reading until you have all three and a long weekend. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars TORRENT Tips the Scales of Awesome

It's not easy to write a spoiler-free review for the third book in a series -- especially considering how the preceding novels (WATERFALL & CASCADE) left readers hanging, drooling, and begging to know what was going to happen next! But because I've loved traveling to medieval Italy with Gabi and Lia (I'm practically in mourning at the thought that my adventures with The She-Wolves of Siena could be coming to an end) I'm bound and determined not to spoil the journey for those of you who have not yet dipped your hearts into the River of Time.

I don't know what it is about these novels that makes me love them so dearly. Is it the author's fantastic craft? The heart-twisting imagination? The dashing Italian knights? The feeling that, at any moment, anyone -- or everyone -- I've grown to love over the course of these three books could die? Well, it's all that and so much more. It's love. Honest-to-goodness, true book love -- for Torrent, as well as Waterfall and Cascade, the other two books in the River of Time series.

Inserting fresh intrigues, new twists, and secret brotherhoods into the third installment of this romantic adventure, the author grows the presence of newer characters (like Lord Greco) and forces the existing cast (especially Gabi) to mature emotionally through adventures of both a physical nature and of the heart. Torrent is the perfect conclusion to this trilogy -- not only because it satisfies on every level, but because it keeps you hoping that the younger She-Wolf of Siena (Lia) will get a series of her own sometime soon. (Hint, hint, wink, wink to Lisa T. Bergren and the Publishing Powers That Be.) I adore these books and plan to read the entire series again as soon as I get the chance!

Rapturous romance and spine-tingling adventure await you within Lisa T. Bergren's medieval Italy, so don't wait another minute to let yourself get swept away by the River of Time.

The only bad thing about this book? That the series is over! I loved every single part of these books and am extremely sad to see them over. However, this book is something to look forward to. The last in The River of Time Series, this book is the continuation of Gabi and Lia's time traveling escapades.

Gabi and Lia have better control over their time traveling abilities. They go back in time to get their father, previously deceased...then they had back to the fourteenth century. Marcello is still as charismatic and handsome as ever, he always has to rescue Gabi. Gabi and Lia aka The She-Wolves of Siena are in constant danger; they were attacked periodically throughout the book. This book has no lack of action. The reader will be entertained and involved in the outcome of these attacks.

The relationship with Gabi and Marcello continues to develop to the point of love, as does Lia's and Luca's. Their sweet and somewhat innocent romance is perfect for this book and also allows reader from ages 13-20+ to enjoy Torrent. The characters are very well-developed, the reader will grow attached to them. The secondary characters are just as interesting to get to know. Some are devious and evil, others are more neutral and/or their intentions are obscured, and others are simply charming.

The book is situated in Italy and the author clearly did her research; the book is full of subtle historical facts that provide detail without sounding like a history lesson.

The events are fast-paced, the reader will finish this book quickly as it is impossible to put down! The ending...I couldn't have imagined it any other way. This book is recommended to teens/young adults/adults.

Have I mentioned how much I love this series? It is so good. I can't remember the last time I read a series where each book was equally awesome. I love all the characters in this book. Gabi is a great leading lady and you can see why everyone around her loves her as well. Marcello is dreamy and you can't help but love him. Luca and Lia are also amazing and I hope that we get another trilogy with their story. There is once again a lot of adventure in this story, Bergren weaves the historical elements in so nicely that you hardly realize your learning something as you're reading. While the story takes place in 1344 Italy, you don't really feel like you're reading a historical novel. Bergren really brings everything to life. The plot is great and executed well, you have to keep reading to find out what is going to happen and how Gabi is every going to get out of the trouble she finds herself in. There is even a bit of a love triangle in this one, which added a lot to the story.

The series is awesome and keeps you reading; you love the characters and setting and any series that is this good deserves five stars. My only complaint is that I wanted a tiny bit more at the end, and epilog or something. I wanted to know what happened with certain characters. I also wanted to see more of Lia and Luca in the story, they both were awesome in book two and I missed seeing them in this book. I really do hope that Bergren writes a series about them.

If you haven't read these books...DO IT. It's such a fun series that anyone would enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Third book?? Still amazing!

By the third book, I think most authors rely on the fact that they wrote two good/entertaining books, and the readers will read a third book just because. But how often can you say the third book is your favorite? I know I can here. With so many twists and turns, I could not predict what would happen next, which made it all the more fun to read. After three books, I easily get annoyed with many female heroines who have silly notions in their head. I should be annoyed with Gabi, and he constant trouble magnet kills, but never once. I think it is because the author did such a wonderful job developing her character, and making a truly believable young girl who is forced to mature at an accelerated rate. To me, Gabi is a real (while maybe not almost 18--a little older perhaps) young woman, but isn't that what living in that era does to a girl, makes them mature faster?

I also like that the book keeps true to the era. The people if Sienna and Florence are in awe and not always in a good way at the time traveling family. They are obviously out of place, but have enough sense to not take it too far and get the people too riled up (not that this is necessarily how things turn out for them). All in all, a wonderful series that will entertain you to the very end, and then some.

5.0 out of 5 stars Torrent is outstanding!

Torrent was amazing. I read it in a week, which is difficult for a mom who homeschools her two children to find time to do so!

Torrent finds the reader again swept back into the lives of Gabi and Lia. Their family is whole again and they must begin to accept their new life in Medieval Italy. Their parents must also accept the fact that their daughters are now considered women and the role of parents of teenagers in this time period is drastically different from the 21st century. As Marcello and Gabi's love grow, so do the battles that surround them.

Can their love survive the stress of normal medieval times along with the added pressure of Marcello's stature of Lord Forelli? Gabi is thrown from being a typical modern day teenager into the possibility of becoming Lady Forelli. Could this really be happening to her? How will she accept this new role if asked? Is she ready for such a role so young? Will her enemies even allow the She-Wolves to relax and get settled into their new roles in this time? Will her parents accept that they must take certain orders from Marcello? All questions that are explored in this book! Enjoy! Dive into the river!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful third (and final?) book in the series
Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2012

I have reviewed the series and the first two books (Kindle editions) on their respective product pages. This review is specifically for the third book in the series, "Torrent".

What can I say? Mrs. Lisa T Bergren doesn't disappoint with the third installment for the "River of Time" series. This book gave me all I loved from the first two books (strong & well-written characters, plot twists, romance, adventure, etc.) and gave us even more through great character growth/development in our main cast, new support characters, and some great touching romantic/friendship/family moments.

If this is truly the last book in the series (which, it could be, as there wasn't a cliff-hanger ending), I would love to read a "prologue" of sorts; you know, hear about how the main characters' lives played out. I do hear there is a possibility of a 4th book, and the author has an excerpt of a draft for a 4th book on her website, in case the publishers give the green light on another book. I would be INCREDIBLY happy if there was another book, but the way the third book ended left me satisfied.

Bottom line: read the series. Tell your friends (mom, sister, random lady next to you at the coffee shop) to read them.

Tripped upon this book actually. Upon the start of it I realized that it was a story in which the main character was a 17 year old girl. I thought it would be focused towards a younger reading audience. It isn't. I found the writing style and storyline to be smooth and interesting. So much so, that I ended up buying the next two books in the series. Read all three within three days. Yeah for having a Kindle! The author admitted that she took some creative license with the actual historical facts of this time, but I don't think it was anything glaringly distracting. I would now like to read actual history of this time period due to the stories this author has written in the series. The characters are interesting, some you'll love, some you'll hate, but they all blend well together in the story that I think you will find interesting.

I loved Torrent just as much as the first two books (Waterfall and Cascade)! This is quite an amazing series. This review will be rather short for I want to let you the reader experience it all for yourselves. I have hope that this may not be the last we see of some of our favorite characters ( check out Lisa's website) she hints that there may be more books:D
The adventure that Gabi and Marcello go on this time around just had me shaking my head and talking to my book, hurray this is awesome, and then NO, NO, NO, NO, THIS CAN NOT BE HAPPENING! The ending was perfect and at the same time, I want more just because, I do.
Great series Mrs. Bergren, and oh please let us have the rest of the stories of these characters.
