How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

Hill's "Dalziel and Pascoe" is hands down, by far, our favorite detective series; it has remained consistently entertaining and engaging.

The problem has been that few of the books were available for Kindle. Just one every now and then. And the older paperbacks were hard to find, and often quite pricey.

Well, someone has decided to open the floodgates. As of this writing there are five "Dalziel and Pascoe" books on free offer through KindleUnlimited Lending Library. Of more immediate value, there are fifteen books now available on Kindle. Some start at $.99, and many are around $2.99. We just stocked up our library in case the books go off the market again.

The books are not only good, they are fine for rereading, (after a suitable period of lying fallow). So, this is a fine time to get into the series and to stock up. I'm not a shill; I'm just delighted to see these on offer.

Hmm . . . The entry in Goodreads says that this is Dalziel & Pascoe #6, but the cover of the book says that it is #5. The story is intriguing and well-told. The author is a skilled writer, and this book did not disappoint. The ending was a surprise, even though the murderer was not (to me, anyway). The story seems to be focused more on Pascoe than on Dalziel, and additional development is completed on Sgt. Wield's character, which added to the quality of the story. This is an easy read, and even though it was written in 1980, the only parts of it that showed its age were the references to disco.

5.0 out of 5 stars From a biased fan!

Years ago, my daughter recommended this series, which I am only reading now, and rapidly learned why she was so entranced. Dalziel & Pasco are not always likable, but their characters are beautifully sketched from book to book, adding layer upon layer of human complexity--they are both people I would love to work with! Hill's stories are as complex as his characters, and his landscape descriptions are haunting--they draw the reader in to the worlds he creates. And, after all, this is the joy, for me, of reading, even beyond the mystery-puzzles and the fascinating characters --to be drawn into worlds I can never know so completely and intimately as in a well-written book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dalziel and Pascoe - Aways a winning combination

Andy Dalziel and Peter Pascoe are onto another series of murders. It starts with a middle-aged woman found strangled and laid out with her hands crossed over her chest. Soon others follow, young women, calls for the police to stop the "Yorkshire Choker" and phone calls from someone or someones to the local newspaper that quote Hamlet. What is the connection to all of them and why the quotes? Dalziel and Pascoe may not always get along, but they can solve a mystery.

A very good read, full of color and twist and turns, as well as a wonderful introduction of a new character that I hope to see continue: Sgt. Wield, a gay policeman who manages to play his cards really well in interviews. A good foil to both of the main characters and in this book he is one of the pivotal characters in hunting down clues and helping solve the case.

The thing with Reginald Hill is that almost all of his books are intelligent, engaging and full of well-developed characters. So the spectrum of writing is good to incredibly good. This early D&G entry, "A Killing Kindness" is closer to the good end than to the great. Author Hill puts a heavy focus on the procedural side of detective work as the dynamic duo plus the estimable Sergeant Wield track a serial killer with a penchant for explaining himself/herself with quotes from Shakespeare. Additional color is added with a look at English gypsies who inhabit the story start to finish.

For regular fans of Dalziel and Pascoe, who haven't gotten to this novel yet, this is number five in the series, chronicling a well-developed relationship between the two cops and including a pregnant Ellie Pascoe and a still-in-the-closet and lovelorn Sergeant Wield. It's a good read with plenty of indications of the great things that are to follow in this series.

A good mystery with bodies dropping unexpectedly and gallows humor abounds. An eventful journey through death and mayhem. Some old familiar characters and a new spark of two, memorable but fleeting. A real puzzle with an interesting race to the finish.
