4.0 out of 5 starsmore exciting fun with the Athena Club
Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2019
This is the third book in the series about the “monstrous”—but very appealing—daughters (literal or figurative) of several famous fictional 19th-century villains: Mary Jekyll, Diana Hyde, Beatrice Rappacini, Catherine Moreau, and Justine Frankenstein. In the first book they met, became friends, and formed the Athena Club, living together in Mary’s London home under the watchful eye of housekeeper Mrs. Poole. They also got involved with Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and Jack the Ripper. In the second book they branched out into Europe, met Irene Adler and Count Dracula, and added Lucinda Van Helsing to their number. They’ve now returned home and set out on a new quest: to rescue Alice, their maid, who has proved to have “monster” powers of her own, and—oh, yes—Sherlock too: both have disappeared mysteriously and have probably been kidnapped. Predictably they run into Holmesian archvillain Moriarty in the process, but the most serious threat proves to come from elsewhere.

Like the other two books, this one is full of adventure, peril, and fun. All the young women are delightful (my favorite is the rapscallion Diana), and the best part of the book is the endearingly snarky dialogues among them that periodically interrupt the narrative. For some reason I couldn’t quite identify, this book didn’t seem to “zing” quite as much as the first two, but it was certainly enjoyable. I was thus saddened to read hints at the end suggesting that this would be the last of the Athena Club’s adventures. I do hope I’m wrong about that!

3.0 out of 5 starsFun continuation of the adventures

The monstrous gentlewomen are saving the world. Mummies, mesmerists, and murderers call the ladies to action. Our favorite characters journey across England and Cornwall to defeat the bad ‘uns and rescue their friends. The story isn’t quite as cohesive as the previous 2, but still a fun read.

3.0 out of 5 stars somehow not as good

perhaps if i had reread the second book it would have rolled better into the next? it appeared convoluted. complicated and yet abrupt. those characters are just gone? who replaces them? i will certainly read the next to see what happens to the girls next.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still not as good as the first sadly

Trigger Warnings: abandonment, confinement, and gaslighting of a child by a parent; genre typical action and murder.

So... I liked this series less and less as it went on. I finished all of it - don't get me wrong, but after really enjoying the first one, the second and third books just let me down a bit. Part of it was that the clever use of character asides and the full on meta of Cat discussing writing the books and the necessary evil of self-promotion of the series and her "previous" books were really fun and fresh and unexpected in the first book, but later on just got painfully repetitive. Cat blurbs her books, Diana is crude, Mary is disapproving of Diana being crude, lather, rinse, repeat. I think because all of the asides were technically "after" the events of the stories themselves, we didn't get any sense of character development, and they somehow starting feeling like caricatures of the characters in the same books which was a bit jarring as the series progressed. For this book in particular, we had a lot of characters on the page, especially early on and those characters ended up with very anticlimatic climaxes of their individual subplots. Moriarty - one of the big bads of literature - and his six (or seven? I honestly lost track) coconspirators of the Order of the Golden Dawn seemed to blend together and then almost became an afterthought after being set up as the main villains of the story. And the Athena Club members themselves, while still awesome, ended up being a LOT of moving parts and perspectives for one book, and I think that's part of what made this book a lot less tight and concise than the first one. They're almost the same length (unlike the over-the-top length of the second book), but the pacing of the first one kept me listening to the audiobook, while the third one felt a little bit like a slog.

I still love the overall concept and the voices of the Athena Club, but as a trilogy, it just wasn't as strong as a standalone book I think would have been sadly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Concluding chapter of the Athena Club
Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2020
Conclusion to the Athena Club trilogy (sadly, as I'd have been happy to see it as an ongoing series). I did enjoy it although not as much as the first two. Gross brings into the series Helen Vaughan, from Arthur Machen's Great God Pan ... and I welcomed that reference but felt that she upped the power ante in ways that didn't connect as well with the original novel as some of the previous characters did, and also tied to her to an existing cast member in a manner that seemed too coincidental to me. More to the point though is a change in the relationship status of one of the primary characters that struck me as bordering on Mary Sue-ish and left a bad taste in my mouth.

In general though, I still recommend the series.

Another adventure with the ladies of the Athena Club, this time in Cornwall. The author once again cleverly meshes multiple historical facts in her fiction.
